  1. I hate your friend. He just needs to be himself. If he tries to explain it to each of the ladies, he's going to come off as arrogant or commitment phobic. He just needs to be careful not lead anyone on by saying or doing something which indicates he wants to be serious with her.
  2. I'm certainly not saying it should be. It outrages me, too. And, I agree with you that anyone who feels that strongly against this country should leave it. However, if we censor the right of anyone, even ungrateful idiots, to say outlandish things (physical displays which do not cause physical injury or inconvenience are the equivalent of speech, both logically and legally), then none of us is safe in expressing our opinions. I agree with you that they should, "go back to Mexico". I just want to be sure that we still have the right to tell them so.
  3. If there was a fight brewing, I have no problem with confiscating the flag. Those things don't come out of nowhere. Teenage kids have to talk themselves up to get into a fight. Unless he could see it coming, he should have left them alone. I don't mind displays of ethnic pride. I don't find it any worse than wearing green on St. Patrick's day. That said, public schools offering classes in Spanish (or any language other than English), is ridiculous. You can keep your cultural heritage and still assimilate.
  4. Sure you were. I once had a fairly heated argument with my father, a WWII vet, over flag burning. As much as I love the flag, I love the Constitution more. I believe we have to protect free speech at almost any cost. That would include the right to fly the U.S. flag below the Mexican flag, and even upside down. It would also include the right of any outraged citizen to call the students names, tell them to "go home", and denigrate them for the act. However, if it wasn't their flag and flagpole, then it could be considered criminal mischief (or the California equivalent), and should be prosecuted.
  5. Did anyone mention Bizmarke. I know it goes in the so bad its good category, but dogs are still crying from Say He's Just a Friend.
  6. That's right. Thanks for the help. Does anyone know anything about their coach (i.e. where he was before), or about any players? I understand they are drawing from Boone County and Ryle.
  7. Just saw Cooper on the P-burg schedule. I don't know anything about them. Can anyone fill me in?
  8. I'm only a casual horse racing fan. I just clicked on the post because I heard something about cloning Barbaro and wanted to see if anyone else was a little creeped-out by that. I continued reading because of the obvious depth of emotion of everyone on both sides of the debate over whether the story deserves continued mention and whether the Jackson's were right to attempt to save/extend the life of the animal. As to the worth of the story, a story continues to have legs only if people continue to be interested in it. Obviously, many people continue to be interested in this story. The second point seems to be that people should not wish to hear more about it because: (a) the efforts to save/extend the life of the animal were cruel and futile, probably driven by greed; and/or (b) it was a horse, get over it. I do not know the Jacksons and do not feel I have sufficient information to speculate on their motivation. I did feel uncomfortable when the injury occurred because the little I knew about that type of injury suggested that it is always fatal and I believe it cruel to let an animal suffer without chance of recovery of a decent quality of life. However, I was not sufficiently interested to become expert in the current state of veterinary medicine to judge. Therefore, to those who have heard enough, stop listening. To those who desire to hear more, I am sure the story will be often repeated. Unless someone knows the Jacksons and can state that they acted based upon greed, I would urge the benefit of the doubt. Everyone who has been faced with the decision of putting a cherished pet to sleep knows it is not an easy choice when there is any chance of recovery. I do not know that is how the Jacksons viewed Barbaro, but I can not say to the contrary either. I imagine that may have been their motivation early on. Once everything began playing out on a public stage I am certain it was more difficult for them to make that choice there than it is for me in the back office of my local vet. It seems an issue upon which reasonable minds may differ.
  9. They cost themselves a play-off win but gained something far more enduring. Congratulation to both Sara Tucholsky and the members of the Central Washington team.:thumb:

  11. It seems the consensus is that these numbers don't say much about which state produces the most major college football players. It says even less about which state produces the most quality high school football players. There are a lot of great high school players who don't go on to any D1 program, much less to the SEC or ACC. Participation in another sport, lack of D1 size/speed, proximity to a smaller school. I don't think you can quantify the question of where the best high school football is played by looking at D1 numbers. It is subjective. In my opinion, the states with the best high school football are, in order, Texas, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. That is based on the numbers participating, the infrastructure created to support football (read big stadiums and huge booster organizations), and the passion of their fans. Remember, I am generalizing for whole states. I am sure there is a town or an area of Maryland where the quality of football and the passion for same is just as great as it is in Midland Texas. But, overall I believe these are the four top states.
  12. No, its not coming from the air. Its coming from the bodies buried underneath the stadium.
  13. Ugh! :irked: I voted wrong. Mentally delete one vote from 2 team intra and add it to 2 team inter. The chances of a 4 beating a 1 are slim (though it does happen). However, with so many 4 team districts, it takes too much from the value of the regular season to have a 2 - 8, no. 4 team make the playoffs. Also, I like the idea of having to get ready to play someone new in the playoffs. I noticed this year that there was absolutely no excitement leading up to the first round. Here's the 2A first round games from 2007: Class 2A Prep Bowl Heath (4) (4-6, 1-3D) at Caldwell County (1) (7-3, 4-0D) 7:30C Murray (3) (5-5, 2-2D) at Trigg County (2) (7-3, 3-1D) 7:30C Monroe County (4) (2-8, 0-3D) at Green County (1) (10-0, 3-0D) 7:00C Metcalfe County (3) (8-2, 1-2D) at Glasgow (2) (8-2, 2-1D) 7:00C Todd County Central (4) (1-9, 0-3D) at Fort Campbell (1) (8-2, 3-0D) 7:30C Hancock County (3) (4-6, 1-2D) at Owensboro Catholic (2) (5-5, 2-1D) 7:30C Fort Knox (4) (0-10, 0-3D) at Danville (1) (8-2, 3-0D) 7:30E Washington County (3) (4-6, 1-2D) at Bardstown (2) (4-6, 2-1D) 7:30E Owen County (4) (1-9, 0-3D) at DeSales (1) (5-5, 3-0D) 7:30E@Southern Carroll County (3) (2-8, 1-2D) at Christian Academy-Louisville (2) (7-3, 2-1D) 7:30E Morgan County (4) (1-9, 0-3D) at Prestonsburg (1) (7-3, 3-0D) 7:30E Bath County (3) (7-3, 1-2D) at Shelby Valley (2) (5-5, 2-1D) 7:30E Newport (4) (1-9, 0-3D) at Newport Central Catholic (1) (9-1, 3-0D) 7:00E@Newport Lloyd Memorial (3) (3-7, 1-2D) at Holy Cross (Covington) (2) (5-5, 2-1D) 7:00E Knott County Central (4) (2-8, 0-3D) at Corbin (1) (9-1, 3-0D) 7:30E Leslie County (3) (2-8, 1-2D) at Middlesboro (2) (7-3, 2-1D) 7:00E I doubt there was much excitement around any of the 1-4 match-ups. I wouldn't mind knocking a week off the schedule.

  16. I agree with Ram that different characteristics are needed for different positions. I would like to see if there aren't certain traits that we can agree on that apply to every position. For example, Leadership. To me this means more than vocal encouragement or chastisement of team-mates. A good leader is always one who leads by example. Players respect a team-mate that always gives 100% of what they have to give. Some very fine leaders aren't the best players. However, their example challenges the rest of their team to measure up. Courage. To me this means confidence + performance when it counts. Great athletes who don't come through in the clutch don't add much to their team. Some players disappear when the game is on the line. A player with courage wants the ball thrown/handed to him; wants the ball thrown to his receiver or run to his side of the defense; wants to kick the field goal; wants to have the key block; or any other key assignment on the last play of the game to win it. Consistency. This goes back to the Leadership quality. A great player has to put it on the line each play of each game and each drill in practice. Enthusiasm. Not the vocal kind. Some kids just act like they would rather be somewhere else. Maybe I'm just getting old (in fact I know I am), but it seems there is less and less enthusiasm. Our society is turning our kids into teenage cynics. They don't want to be seen to be overly invested in anything. They have to be cool. (Even though they would never use an outdated term like "cool" on penalty of death). But if one kid shows genuine enthusiasm for the game, gets excited at big plays, acts as if the football field is the place he most wants to be, it is contagious. Aggressiveness. Football is a hitting sport. Except, maybe a kicker, I don't think any football player can be great if they don't like contact. Just some random thought, in no particular order. I'd like to see what others think. P.S. Regarding the discussion of size and stats, its true that big schools often overlook good players because they are undersized or a step slow, but not always. Every so often a D1 school will find a gem that slipped through every other program's cracks because he didn't measure up. However, the maxim is true that a good big man will beat a good little man more times than not. The same is even more true for speed. And at each level the bar gets higher. Size and speed matter more the farther up the ladder you go. In high school it simply isn't as important. Some of the finest high school linemen I have seen have been undersized. That doesn't mean they could have competed consistently on the D1 level.
  17. Amen, Leatherneck. I've seen this first hand. The KHSAA takes the position that its member schools must obey it rather than the Circuit Court. I think its fair to say that pretty much every Circuit Judge in Kentucky takes the position that his or her Orders must be obeyed by everyone. Of course the KHSAA could eliminate the problem by creating a transfer rule that can be applied to everyone equally.
  18. I'll take a shot at this. As always, the o-line seems to be the first place they need to look. Seniors Nathaniel Stephens, Darrin Lawson and Matt Blevins are gone. Seniors to be Zack Bragg, Daulton Faulks, and Justin Trout will have to anchor the line. From there, they have a pretty strong group of Sophomores to choose from and a couple of them will have to step up. Michael Burchett should continue to grow into the QB position which he had to fill the last third of last season. He will have a good selection of targets to pass to including Austin Gearheart, Matt Swords and Josh Craynon. The backfield is set with Alan Craynon, Seth Setser and Blake Meade. That is not to say that others won't get a shot at the ball, those are the first three that come to mind. Stephens will be missed on the defensive side of the ball as well, where he has anchored the middle at linebacker for the last couple of years. Look for outstanding defensive performances from Seth Setser, Blake Meade and a Sophomore, Michael Crowe, to make the difference. Even with some losses in the secondary as well, I look for the Blackcat Defense to be even quicker and stronger against the run. Look for the younger Craynon brother to be burr in the secondary. With a large group of seniors who have been together for many years and have a sense of destiny, absent complacence, I look for the Cats to take at least one more step toward a title. (Easy to say in February). Look for the district to be improved, with Shelby Valley and Bath County returning strong teams as well. Even Morgan County should be competitive. They played hard with a very young team last year and should benefit from finally having some stability in coaching. I agree with those who argue 2A is the most competitive class. Corbin, DeSales, and of course NCC will be very strong again. GO CATS!!!!!
  19. There was a gully washer in Boyd County on Wed. morning. I don't think Louisa got as much rain but it was still pretty heavy when I went through there about 1:00 p.m. If its been raining steady since, I can't see how the field will not be a mess. To me that sounds like a good thing for LC. Belfry usually has trouble hanging on to the ball in the early season and it is easier to keep balls and hands dry at home. I still think this will be a good one to see and I hope a good crowd from both schools brave the weather. Good luck to both.
  20. Coal Grove aint' bad this year and neither is Ashland. NCC is darn good. I'll take Belfry but not by as much as most on the board seem to think. Its still early and it will be difficult to hang on to the ball, so I figure Belfry to lose a fumble or two, which should keep LC in it until late. I look for a long Belfry drive in the late 3rd to mid-4th quarter to take the lead for good. I make it Belfry 28, LC 20.
  21. Really?, It will be interesting to see if it turns out that way. It will be a late night.
  22. Rain, rain, rain. The fewest turnovers wins. So, out on a limb, I predict P-burgs backs cure their turnover problems and fumble only twice, losing one. If Pikeville stays in their new offense, I foresee snap problems and exchange problems. They fumble six times, losing 4. Therefore, P-burg 21, Pikeville 6. If Pikeville goes under center and hands off to Harmon 25 times, they fumble twice, losing one. P-burg 10, Pikeville 7.
  23. I agree about special teams. With the weather it may be a fumble on special teams at that.
