  1. Many of you are probably not familiar with the 1977 Tomcats, but the Paul Patterson(never lost to a 16th region opponent) coached Tomcats made it to the state tournament semifinals on Saturday morning before losing to the eventual champion, ironically Louisville Ballard. How would this game play out with the disciplined Patterson offense and defense against the run happy Lions. Patterson had 2 first team All State players(as well as Ky-Indiana All Stars) in Jeff Kovach and Jim Harkins, Elliott probably has 2 to 4 All State caliber players in Ferguson, Faulkner, Faulkner and Knipp. I loved this Ashland team but have the utmost respect and admiration for what this Elliott team has and is still accomplishing. I predict a 70-70 overtime game. How's that for a cop out? PS-Elliott County-Bring the 16th Region a State Championship!!
  2. BCG is coming off as a classless jerk. It's embarrassing to me as as UK fan and alumni. He is doing himself no favors. He needs to watch film on how Rick and Tubby handled these matters. If UK's on the court performance doesn't improve, these stunts will fast lead to his downfall.
  3. It is my understanding, from a very reliable source, that every member of the Derek Smith All Stars AAU team made the list. Congratulations to these worthy players, this may be a FIRST for any state AAU program.:thumb:
  4. In the Ashland area the following has occurred recently to name a few: -Goody's closed/closing -K Bee Toys closed -B Moss closed -AK Steel shut down layed off almost 100% of employees(now reopening fortunately due only to problems at Middletown plant) -Sky Line Chilli closed -Value City closed With these things happening people either spend less, spend on credit or can't save/prepare for the future. No matter how you look at it it's not good times.
  5. The three things that bother me most(and although I am not a coach, these items seem like coaching fundamentals to me) are the unusual substitution patterns, refusal to call necessary timeouts( see Joe B. Hall here) and the refusal to go with a zone occasionally. Using a zone not only makes the other teams "prepare" for it, but completely can change the momentum of the game when things go bad, also allow supposedly weak defensive players(see Harrrelson) to be hidden a bit to take advantage of their offensive skills. I am willing to give the benefit of the doubt on personnel, more time needed, etc. but the above mentioned items are bothersome to me at this time.
  6. I think one of the key factors in the decline of AHS basketball is that it doesn't appear that anyone in a leadership position has embraced the concept of AAU basketball. Like it or not, the elite players, or those who become elite, follow the AAU path from a early age. I am not saying I agree or disagree with the AAU concept, but like it or not, it is here to stay. The elite players embrace basketball 12 months a year. I think AHS wants to be a good all around sports program, which they are, and not focus solely on basketball, which is probably the proper perspective to have. However, it's difficult to excel sometimes when athletes get spread too thin. It is my opinion, unless someone in the Ashland system fully embraces AAU, it will be difficult for AHS to become an elite program again. The perfect example is Elliott County, which doesn't play football(or soccer I believe), the Faulkners have literally played hundreds of basketball games over the past 10 years or so and have developed(along with a lot of heart)a skill set that is difficult to compete with. Also, Jon VanHoose at Russell. These are division I type players who full dedicate themselves to basketball only.
  7. I have never got a baseball during a game, but I found out the easiest way to get a batting practice ball. A lot of folks I know have gone early, with gloves in hand, two hours before the game hoping to snag a ball. Not me, I show up at game time just in time for the national anthem at best. A couple of summers ago as I arrived at my seat in right field just before the opening pitch, I looked down and what did I see? An official Major League Baseball staring me in the face, so I bent over and picked it up. It must have been there unseen from BP before the gates opened. See it's not so hard. :ylsuper:
  8. How many remember their first Reds game?? Mine was in 1969(at least thats the one I remember, could have been a year or two or three earlier) at Crosley Field. I vividly remember the 1969 game because there were baseballs painted on the outside of the stadium with a quote of something to the effect of "1869-1969 100 Years of Reds Baseball". I remember sitting in the sun deck and watching Bobby Tolan catch those fly balls to right filed. Seems like I also remember seeing Tony Perez hitting one off the center field wall in the vicinity of the big clock. It was really a magical memory for me.:thumb:
  9. Maybe but not necessarily, if the three point line was in effect, it may have resulted in more three point attempts resulting in a lower shooting percentage, also less two point attempts which would have been higher percentage. Also, with less two point attempts, there probably would have been less free throws taken which are extremely high percentage. But, who knows for sure. Perhaps with a three point line Pete may not have developed the ball handling and passing skills to the level that he did. With the three point line you hear of players shooting 200-300 shots per day. Would Pete have fell into the glory of the three point shot?? I understand that he would practice his passing skills endlessly bouncing the ball against a wall. He was one of a kind!!:thumb:
  10. I am giving this one 2 thumbs up. Very entertaining, one of my favorite CE movies.
  11. Let's be fair here. No one will ever no for sure the impact Carter's injury's have had on his development. Once one gets injured sometimes it's hard to get your confidence back. He has also endured a change of coaches which in his case may have not been a positive. He could have quit, but he has hung in there and at least fulfilled the role of the student athlete and as far as I know he has never embarrassed the university like many others who have been "worthy" of a scholarship.
  12. You are spot on with your comments. You said it just as I would have. Glad to see the Tubster do well. I think he is obviously better off away from UK. I believe UK will better off with the new coach. (Sorry, this was in response to Post #50-Okie1)
  13. Although I am not an ND fan, or hater for that matter, I think a successful ND would be a plus for college football, the same way a successful UK basketball team is a plus for college basketball. It may not be necessary but it would be a definite plus.
  14. This one's easy for me-"The Dirty Dozen" Lots of the great actors-Charles Bronson, Telly Sevalas, Donald Sutherland, Jim Brown, among others.:thumb:
  15. I have to agree with Forde on this one. It's obvious that Olson didn't leave when the time was right. The legacy will be somewhat tainted. What bothers me most is leaving right before the season right after recruiting a new group to campus. Not fair to the kids involved. Five kids who just committed to his program are left high and dry. And we want to get on the kids for changing their minds. Kids are kids, but the adults should be held more accountable. To me it's sad when the coaches screw up(like this situation or probation issues) the kids left are the ones who really get punished.
  16. Donovan, who is still my preference, but I think BCG will be fine.
  17. I was at the game and have watched the tape. Holding or not, the critical error was McClinton getting sucked up too close to the line, when Coffee cut back no one was there. The hold(or non hold) did not create the touchdown, it was the missed assignment. Bottom line is Bama is a better team. We were fortunate to be as close as we were. I take a lot of positives from this loss. To go to their place(they were ranked #2, the hightest since 1993 I think) with their fans really into the game and be in it to the point where there was an actual chance to win at the end was more than anyone could have hoped for. Bama was supposed to win this game. This was a great game in which to build on. Also, virtually all our experiences with Bama fans were very positive.:ylsuper:
  18. I did not attend the first 3 or 4 class reunions maily because of all those old high school insecurities and little desire to attend. I was good friends/acquaintences with the "in crowd" but was never in the inner circle, but didn't feel the need. I had great friends who were like minded. At the urging of a class mate or two, I finally attended the last two or at least parts. It was actually quite enjoyable and most all were very decent and friendly. The best part of all was the reaction from those when they saw my wife, who is, trust me on this, extremely beautiful. There was only one or two at the entire reunion that I would put in her class. I just sat there and smiled.:ylsuper:
  19. Thanks, I had already been to the Florida website without much luck. It appears the injury may have completely derailed his career. I hope not. I was hoping someone would have some firsthand information. Thanks again.
  20. This is a second request. Surely someone from Louisville can give us an update on Jesse Mudd.
  21. I think the most important issue is "Can UK run the ball effectively?" If so, I believe UK will win. U of L will stack the box and do everything to force UK to throw the ball. If the 'Cats don't rush for 150-200 yards, chalk one up for the Cards.
  22. It's way too early to even think realistically about what will happen a year from now. You never know how long it will take for a player to grasp the college game no matter how much hype they get. It took Woodson 3 or 4 games into his redshirt Junior year before he really clicked. I believe if Hartline performs he will be the QB for 3 years. If he doesn't click it may be Cobb, who knows. It will take till the end of this current season before the picture even remotely begins to clear. I am just glad we have this problem on which to speculate.:thumb:
  23. Former St. X star, Jesse Mudd, seemed destined for greatness till an ankle injury sidelined him at the University of Florida after his great freshman season. Does anyone have an update on his current golf status???
  24. A key question is "what kind of putter did you break"? Is is an offset putter? Is it a heel shafted putter? I, personally, have never been able to get comfortable with an offset putter. If you want an offset putter the "two ball" putters seem to be the rage right now. If you want a putter thats not offset, I would recommend looking at the "SeeMore" putters. I find getting new golf clubs very difficult, something like finding a good woman or a car.
  25. I like Dunn, my main problem is the same one I had with Griffey. He needs to lose 20 to 25 pounds and get his body in the shape it can be(naturally, of course) from a strengh and conditioning perspective. This would have to help his quickness on defense and probably help the hitting some. I don't get these star athletes who don't appear to try to maximize their potential. This is where leadership comes into play.
