  1. To an extent, it has already happened. The amount of money available for financial aid never matches the documented need. So far, the solution has been to cap the maximum awards of financial aid and hope that the families can make up the difference. We have not had to turn people away due to lack of space. In the last few years Trinity has added about twenty-five classrooms and several science labs as the enrollment has gone from about 1050 to over 1400. In doing that, Trinity has also won awards. Last year the school received a local award for making the entire school accessible to the handicapped. This past summer, Trinity won a national award for its efforts to welcome and teach students of all levels of academic ability. This award was given by an organisation of over 1200 private high schools. I am more proud of that type of achievement than I am of the state titles in sports. I guess that what I am trying to say is that you don't have to earn your way into Trinity, but Trinity does do a lot to earn the kind of devotion and commitment that causes families to make the sacrifices necessary to attend. I hope that this pride is not perceived as arrogant. It is not intended in that way and in pointing out what I believe are things to be very proud of, I have made NO comments on the efforts made at other schools.
  2. No, every student and their family makes a very large financial commitment when they decide on Trinity. Open enrollment means that schools are a free market. Over 1400 young men and their familys have made the decision that in a free market, Trinity is worth that financial commitment. That says to me that the school has "earned" every one of those students. With regard to the central point of the discussion, of course a larger student body is an advantage. It just isn't an unfair advantage.
  3. I think it will be important to balance the fan appeal of that type of card versus the money they can make from home games. As pointed out earlier, these teams can make more money on a home game.
  4. Jody Demling had an interesting statistic on his blog (http://www.courier-journal.com/blogs/demling/blog.html). On the Trinity team, 15 of 108 (14 percent) of the players are not from a Catholic parish. At X, it is 10 of 104 (10 percent). At Trinity, 2 of 24 starting positions are kids that are not from a Catholic parish (8 percent). For the school as a whole, approximately 20 percent of the Trinity students are not from a Catholic parish. I don't expect that these numbers will change many minds, but the simple truth is that the numbers don't back up the contention that Trinity and x are puting out all star teams from the public schools. In football, the numbers say that public middle school kids are UNDER represented as team members and as starters.
  5. In my opinion, high school events should be reserved for high school players. That said, that isn't what the rules say. By the same token, I also believe that the transfer rules should subject kids that play high school sports in middle school to the same rules as high school students. That also isn't the case. While I'm at it, I also think that the transfer rules should apply to anyone that plays high school sports on any level. But that also isn't what the rules say.
  6. The only "hold" we have over the public schools is a big payday. If they won't play the JV and freshman games, I wouldn't let them have the payday.
  7. It is still a good move by the Manual folks to allow the game to be moved. I hope that the Manual series can continue next year.
  8. I would like to see a schedule that has three district games, x, MBA, another out of state game, and four "local" games. If we can't get four good games out of Jefferson County (Manual, Male, Butler, PRP and I'm sure some others), then some other games from around the state (Cov Cath, Highlands, Lex Cath, Boyle Co and I'm sure a lot of others). For the local games, I'd include a VERY stiff penalty clause for anyone backing out of the JV or Freshman games at the last minute.
  9. It looked to me like it had the distance, but was a little left. It was a good effort.
  10. No, most of the rushing yards came on draws. Early in the game when MBA was lining up and trying to blow the defense out with their size advantage, it didn't work.
  11. For what it's worth, first, MBA has a very good team. More than anything else that was the reason for the loss. It was a good game to get the team and the coaches ready for the rest of the season. I was very pleased with Phillips at running back. I think that before the season is over, this will be the best Trinity defense in several years. The coaches will fix the holesin the pass defense. The QB and receivers are not on the same page yet. It was taking too long for Petrino to find his receivers. That will get better as the season progresses. Bring on the Crimsons.
  12. Having Trinity and St X in separate districts makes competitive, financial and GEOGRAPHIC sense. Mr. Vaught should get out a map and learn to read it.
  13. This game will be on AM 900 and the internet. All other games except at Ballard, at Southern and at Shelby County will also be on AM 900 and the internet. Game stats will also be available real time on the internet. By the way, a BIG thumbs up to Seneca as the only public school this season to allow the broadcast.
  14. Oxnard, No matter how much you try to set Trinity up for a loss or to fail to meet expectations and no matter how much material you try to give MBA as motivation, you still lost last December. Get over it. The MBA people are smart enough to know that the silly predictions in this thread are being made by ex-men that are still trying to crawl out from under a 'Rock. MBA is very well coached and brings confusing defense. They are too good to get blown out. This will be a very close game.
  15. No. There are a lot of reasons for a family to choose a school and those reasons are nobody's business. Regarding payment, you are right. That is why some private schools work very hard to provide financial aid. We never want finances to be the deciding factor.
  16. I saw some things to like and some things to work on. The score was 16-15 SC at the end of three quarters when the varsity portion ended. I thought that the Trinity defense looked good except for three or four plays where everyone bought a fake and didn't stay home. I have no doubt that the coaches will fix that. SC is very fast and deceptive. The Trinity linebackers looked very good. A lot of guys played on the d-line. They will be good. It is harder to judge the DBs since SC didn't pass much. On offense, the quarterback and receivers have a lot of work to do to get in sinc. I thought that Petrino had enough time on most plays but he and the receivers were not always making the same read. That will improve very quickly with a little more time. The running game was okay. All in all, not a bad first effort. It had enough to encourage and enough to work on to keep the players from losing their focus.
  17. The exmen were better in the fifth game of the season. You could try to convince us that IF there had been a sixteenth game they WOULD have been better. But in the fifteenth game of the season, we know who was better. Late in the game, with the game on the line, 4th and one, head to head, the better team won the battle and the war. As far as the rankings this season, it is all just stuff for old guys to argue about. In a couple of weeks just lace em up and prove it.
  18. Unless you happen to support the team that demonstrated over the second half of the season and through the playoffs that it WAS the best team.
  19. Since the coach is part of the team, I think it is obvious that on that day they weren't the based team in the state. They were outplayed and outcoached.
  20. I've never been impressed with his intellect on TV, but I can't imagine that he would say that.
  21. It looked pretty clear to me. Most of the net over and above the cost of putting on the various championships went for salaries for the administrative staff and for running the headquarters. The one thing that did surprise me is how dependent they are on the boys basketball tournament. No wonder they don't want to mess with it. For those that don't like Trinity and x meeting in the finals, keep in mind that that game probably nets an extra $50,000 to the KHSAA. That is a significant amount of money for a group that only projected a $60,000 budget surplus. Did you notice that in 2003 when Trinity and x met in the championship, the net for the football playoffs was $50,000 over budget?
  22. You are kidding, aren't you? The money is used to run the KHSAA. Seems like a good use of the money to me. They could always raise the membership fees to all of the schools instead.
  23. By all means feel free to start your school. If you can convince people to send their kids to a "jock factory" that doesn't educate them, have at it. By the way, good luck with accredidation.
