  1. Well if that kid would have had a head injury, those coaches and officials would have been liable. That's why the rule is there, so you can easily see the eyes of the player. That's common sense. Enforce the rules you are paid to enforce. And if that kid got embarrassed by being removed from the game to remove the visor (as the rule states) and a penalty enforced.... More than likely the child wouldn't try to wear it anymore and the coach will make sure of that too. But this way, the "common sense way," the player will likely try to wear it every week. This is how we got into this mess, by officials being super inconsistent over very black and white rules....no judgement necessary.
  2. Well, today while coaching my son's youth football game in the NKYFL, I had to tell the officials that the QB on the other team had an illegally tinted visor and it should be removed. They said, "Seriously coach." I said, yes, I thought kids being properly equipped was a point of emphasis. They let him play the entire first quarter with it and they had it removed then. I was told, "We aren't sending a 9 year old out of a game for that." I couldn't believe it.
  3. Cool picture. I'm assuming there were referees there. and if so, why did they not enforce the points of emphasis for knee pads? This is the lack of consistency people were talking about in the other thread.
  4. Wow. I guess that's a big reason Coach Barth left WV to head to Ludlow.
  5. Hoping for a better year by the Colonels. I'm interested to see what the QB decision will be.... Gregg or Fields. I know the Colonels lost quite a few seniors last year, especially those up front. They also lost their DC (Good Riddance). Hopefully they fast, physical, and more disciplined. Hopefully the coaching staff can stay out of their own way because there's definitely talent in the pipeline coming up.
  6. When your freshmen play an entire quarter of a varsity scrimmage, you need a better team to scrimmage. Hopefully both teams made it out healthy and ready to go for week 1.
  7. I disagree. If it were, then they would have been enforcing the properly equipped issue already with exposed back plates, uncovered knees, tinted visors, etc. There would be no need to make that a point of emphasis if the already established rules were actually enforced because it is about safety.
  8. Pants are smaller. My 12 year old's pants from last year still fit. I bought a second pair because I like having 2 pairs for my kids. I bought the exact same pair and size, they are so small he can't pull them above his knees. Both are Adult Medium. Guess what....I exchanged them for a Large. They fit. Size up people, as I said before, this isn't rocket science.
  9. That's great news for Dixie. They definitely have talent in the pipelines.
  10. Beechwood should have their way with Purcell. They lost a ton, and last year, didn't beat anyone good (only beat 2 teams with winning records). And their New Head Coach is Chris Mobley, who was Dixie's DC last year. And he is not a good coach to put it lightly. He's had multiple HC jobs in Cincy, and none were even remotely successful. He took a job at a Cincinnati Public School in February, then resigned 2 months later to take the Purcell Marian job. If Beechwood doesn't dominate every aspect of this scrimmage, I'd be shocked and they have some work to do. Purcell is definitely Division 6 in Ohio, last year they were Division 5.
  11. What do any of the pads actually protect? This isn't a sarcastic comment either. We still have concussions with helmet advancements (I firmly think that helmet advancements are actually hurting players in the long run, but that's a different discussion altogether), we still have really bad shoulder injuries despite wearing shoulder pads (probably more-so now with how the shoulder pads keep getting smaller), etc. The pads essentially prevent bumps and bruises. That's it. Knee pads are more effective than hip and butt pads IMHO, but they are all required equipment. I say again, if people overwhelmingly don't want knee pads, make your voices heard and propose rule changes. I'd personally love to make a rule change that says no games or practices on turf, as turf is causing more injuries than anything in football, and has been for the past 2 decades and costs schools way more money than grass, but I digress.
  12. Every official should stay up late reading the rule book. It still blows my mind when I see officials not know the rules for pass interference. I hear multiple times a year officials say "the ball was uncatchable" which is not a rule in high school. Everyone should be studying up on the intricacies of the sport they are supposed to officiate the rules of.
  13. That is whoever's fault is outfitting the kids with pants that don't fit right. If you are in charge of purchasing, make sure the product you purchase fits the players properly. This isn't rocket science. And if you want a rule change, get a ton of coaches together and propose a rule change. That's how these things happen. Officials need to officiate, and coaches need to coach, and priority number one of coaches should be safety of your players, and having them properly equipped is for safety purposes. If the coach or player doesn't like it, get out of the sport.
  14. The knee pads must cover the knee. Many kids are cutting them, making them super tiny, which is illegal.
  15. Rule 7 is the one that goes over motions, shifts, and false starts. In my older copy, Rule 7, Section 2, Article 6 states.... "After a huddle or shift, all players of A shall come to an absolute stop and shall remain stationary without movement of hands, feet, head, or body for at least one second before the snap." That's the leaning penalty by RBs that hardly gets called. The very next rule goes over motion Rule 7, Section 2 Article 7 states.... "Only one player may be in motion at the snap and then only if such motion is not toward his opponent's goal line." So, again, you cannot have forward motion of any kind, but officials have been letting kids take those 1 or two steps, or what I can best describe a diagonal motion. It may be very slight, but it is there and is coached by teams to give the offense an advantage because it is rarely called. Hope that helps.
  16. You are not allowed to be moving forwards forwards as the ball is being snapped. So of the WR is moving forwards 1 or 2 steps as the ball is snapped while he's in motion, it's illegal foward motion. Nobody is allowed to flinch once set, so a RB leaning his entire body forwards (like one would do right before they take a step) it's false start. You will have to give me a while to find my NFHS rulebook. I don't have this year's copy, but I'll site the rules when I dig out last year's book from the abyss in my house.
  17. Bourbon House is great. But for an out of towner going to Cooper, Ryle or even Boone County not wanting pizza, I would recommend La Torta Loca or Boomtown Biscuits and Whiskey. La Torta Loca is Mexican & Venezuelan food with a menu that is completely and utterly unique and absolutely amazing. Boomtown is a little more upscale, but great food that isn't the same ol same ol.
  18. Agreed. Unfortunately, with fewer and fewer officials, the consistency issue is getting worse. Hopefully we can get some new, younger officials through the ranks and they stick with it.
  19. Awesome to hear! I have been complaining about the equipment issue for years. Along with the knee pad issue is the jerseys rolled up and not tucked with the exposed back plate. I also see too many KHSAA officials allowing illegal visors in middle school and the youth level. The formation issue drives me absolutely nuts too. I hope they actually pay attention to it....."off receivers" should also actually be off the ball, not 1 foot behind the "on" wide receiver. If the OT in particular is behind the off receivers, it's an illegal formation, and that has been allowed for entirely too long. I would also like to see an emphasis on illegal motions/false starts. Too often there is forward motion that is not called. Whether it is an RB that leans forward during the cadence or guys going in motion across the field and take a step or 2 forward in a diagonal fashion. Lastly, I see false starts that aren't called in almost every game. You see an OL in a 3 point stance, get up to look over at the sidelines for the new check/signal. That should be flagged. These focus areas about equipment, sportsmanship, and formations is much overdue. I hope officials actually throw flags for improperly equipped players and illegal formations. Get back to the basics.
  20. I agree, bussing is great for this. Without it, it would have not happened IMO.
  21. Wow, bussing team off site for practice. That's clearly not ideal for everyone. NCC athletes will certainly be ecstatic when the stadium is complete. Thanks for the info.
