They’re going to be a big threat in the coming seasons for sure.

The ticket did not disappoint in the sense that it was a good opportunity to see what both teams have to offer. Not knowing much about either team, here were my impressions. Connor looks young. Not necessarily age, but team experience. They were solid on defense considering most of the shot attempts for CCH were from well outside the box. They had 2 or 3 scoring opportunities but an extra touch or distance to goal allowed CCH's defense to recover. They were by far the more physical team on the ball, but in a solid way. CCH looks like they have plenty of talent. They just look like they need time to gel and play less individually. Most of their shots were taken from 20-30 yards out and most of these rolled slowly to goal. Interestingly, they went deep into their bench early. CCH appeared to control possession in both halves but were unable to convert those into goals. For both teams, it seems time will tell as the season moves on.

Flipping a coin to decide which Colonels to watch tonight. There has been quite a bit said on behalf of the Red Colonels thus far on here, and other online pages. Personally looking forward to the Connor / CCH match. With all of the preseason prognosticating related to these two it might be well worth the price of a ticket to see what things look like when the dust settles.

Interesting. I know many teams took the opportunity to play every member of the team. It looked like CCH subbed every 10 minutes or so. As I didn’t get the opportunity to see all of the games, I’ll reserve judgement for now. Either way, the 9th region never fails to disappoint.

I absolutely agree. I wanted to be careful of how I characterized the moment. Respect for the officials, your team and especially the GAME demand better.

Really close and physical match tonight in Park Hills as the Colonels of Covington Catholic defeated the #7 team in the state, the Colonels of Dixie Heights. This was a pretty evenly matched and played game. Dixie controlled the match for most of the first 20 minutes. Excellent passing and dominating possession. They were playing like a team set on a years worth of revenge over last years loss. Meanwhile, Cov Cath was playing last months soccer. After 3 games of reportedly dynamic possession and passing to create opportunities, they decided to (when they possessed the ball) to send it over the head of their Center Forward/Striker not by a little bit either. He was playing 30 yds up with 2 defenders marking him, and someone would just light the fuse like a bottle rocket on labor day. Dixie scored with a screamer of a shot in the 21st minute. Cov Cath began to slowly regain some of their composure moving into the end of the second half, attempting to move the ball down the field. In the 36th minute they finally get it into the box on the ground and as luck would have it, Dixie blatantly fouled the Cov Cath player. It was an instant call by the center ref. The senior, Mac Tereny took the PK and we're tied at 1 a piece going into half time. The second half saw Cov Cath come out with a slightly different attitude. They seemed more relaxed. Their playing style didn't change, but they were more agressive on and off the ball. It was enough to keep Dixie from any fast break opportunities that would amount to anything. With about 7 minutes remailing, Cov Cath was able to convert inside the 12 yd box for a second goal by Mac Tereny. Emotions ran high, and a foul by Dixie in the midfield was enough to send one Dixie player over. He challenged the center ref, and after a couple of looks and a warning, was issued a Red Card with 2-3 minutes left. All in all it was Dixie's game to lose. And they did. Cov Cath was just the beneficiary of it.

I really can't say in terms of Cov Cath's coaching. I really don't know him. As a casual if not curious observer of teams all I CAN say is that this group of young men do not seem to play as one. That can almost always be traced back to a lack of leadership from the sideline and from the field. It's sad, because you can see that they have talent in all three sections of the pitch. There is just no real flow from one third to the next. I will say that looking at their record from last year, there is a possibility that they find whatever it is that they are missing during the post season. Regional tournament will tell the tale.

I would normally start by saying that the Colonels of Cov Cath made the trip to Union to face the Raiders of Ryle. But to be honest, it looked as though only half the team actually showed up ready to play. Any detailed analysis of the match would be reductive. Ryle came out as a unified team to play and to win. They played every second of the 80 minutes like it was they're last 80 minutes. (And for their seniors, it is getting to that point.) Cov Cath played up to Raider's second goal. From that point, they could have taken half the team off the field (mainly the DBs and MF) and attained the same result. Cov Cath came out strong with their 2 goals in the 10th and 25th minute. Both solid goals, one coming from a header out of the corner. The second from a solid slot pass to an open forward for a 1v1. From here out, it was the Colonels match to lose. And as they say, "it takes skill to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory". Ryle answered with a corner kick in the 25th minute. Ball dropped in front of a Ryle player who was staring at 4 motionless defenders and GK. Simple tap in. Cov Cath goes into half time with a 2-1 lead. I'm not sure what transpired during half time, but the 11 who returned to the field, while being the same 11 players, definitely didn't act or play like it. Gone were the deliberate passes and buildup that had been relatively successful for them. (When they've actually done it.) In its place came the ever present and rarely accurate and even less successful moon launch from one of the DBs. Those plays might work occasionally, if the mid field knew or even cared that they were going to happen. The forward receiving the "pass" would be in the attacking third and their nearest support was at the back of the mid field. I counted no less than 3 but usually 4 defenders right there pressuring a lone attacker. And that's pretty much the second half. Ball in possession of a defender, passed to a DB who launches it into no mans land for a turn over. Wash, rinse, repeat. In the middle of this, 3-5 minutes into the second half, a string of poor/lazy defending led to Ryle's equalizer. An offside call gave the Colonels a free kick from the top of the box. The ball is passed to a DB, who immediately sends it back to the GK. With a 3-1 advantage, the GK sends a agonizingly slow pass to the one defender who was marked who manages to allow an attacker to intercept the ball, for an easy 1v1 and the goal. And with 19 minutes remaining Ryle takes a throw in that lands at the feet of an unmarked attacker in the center of the field who takes a rocket of a shot from about 30 yards out through 6 defenders and the goalie for the early win. The Colonels were defeated with 20 minutes remaining. Themes of the Cov Cath games I've watched so far: 1. Aggressive in the beginning. More so if they strike first. They play hard to defend the lead, but once taken, their defense and mid field essentially give up. 2. Defenders and midfielders in the back of the mid field who don't talk, collide or just clog it up. 3. Mid fielders who don't support Fwd's are not supporting the team. 2 Fwd's working against 4-5 defenders with no outlet will rarely score. 4. Wingers who ignore forwards making runs ignore scoring possibilities. 5. Defenders who simply boot the ball into the ether might just as well hand the ball to their opponent. 6. Fwd's who try to fancy their way through 4 defenders almost always turn it over. 7. Talented individuals make the highlight reel. Successful coaches mold individuals into a team. Motivated teams win games. The Colonels have plenty of the first and none of the last. The middle piece, I'll leave to history.

It was "Senior Night in Park Hills as Boone County made the 20 minute drive north to play Covington Catholic. CovCath got the highly expected and equally needed W at Wooten Stadium last night. The biggest surprise was the score at halftime. CovCath 2 Boone Co 1. Boone County's sole goal came from a set piece out of the corner. A Boone Co player headed it high but directly into the hands of the CovCath GK who had to jump to grab the ball from just under the cross bar. He landed, and took a studder step back, into the goal. The Colonels plays an entirely different game than they had the last three. There were coordinated passes, quick, deliberate ball movement and communication on the field. Of the 10 goals for CovCath 6 of them came as a result of 2 hat tricks by 2 Seniors. CovCath heads to Simon Kenton tonight. Whether they bring the same game there remains to be seen.

You're correct. Those are varsity ratings. But I use it as a way to judge the strength of a schools overall program. I did not mean to insinuate otherwise.

Who won the match between Boone Co and Holy Cross?

Holmes is / was ranked 156 in the state and 3655 nationally. NCC is / was ranked 14th in state and 163rd nationally. This just solidifies the saying "Every dog has it's day; and some get two."

"CovCath drops their 3rd straight game and now sit at 6-9-0 on the season. Now they get a breather in the schedule and Coach Robertson can take all he has learned about his young men through the gauntlet of a schedule they've run and try to piece together an XI that can allow them to have some post-season success. They get Boone and Simon Kenton coming up before a game at Ryle next Tuesday." In the few matches I have seen them play I have yet to see them play as a team. They appear to have some fairly talented players but lack a team mentality. (this is almost always a function of coaching, mentoring and leadership more than anything) Great for PKs but deadly in a team sport. A solid win or two might be the antidote for this.

Looks like Cov Cath beat 2 of the 4 tier I teams this weekend. Not sure who they play next. (Boone or HC) From what I understand, this is the furthest the Cov Cath JV team has gotten in Regional play in a few years. Good luck.

This match was a disaster for the Colonels. In the first half Moeller had possession about 65% to 35% for CCH. The second half had Moeller in possession about 85%-90%. When Moeller possessed the ball, they passed and then passed and then passed again. They would switch fields, cross then take a shot on goal. The Colonels goalie was on fire allowing only 1 goal in each half. Not for a lack of shots on goal by Moeller) When he put the ball in play, Moeller won it. Every single time. If Cov Cath managed to intercept a poor pass, they might have taken a touch, on a rare occasion passed, but as has been noted on here before, they mostly kicked the ball into an empty attacking 1/3. The few times I have seen Cov Cath play this year, that seems to be the modus operandi when they're down. A good enough defense, (I believe they are down a couple of their starters) An underwhelming midfield and a front line that gets very little to no support. One of the biggest things I noticed in this game was the disparity in the actions and attitudes of the respective coaching staffs. Moellers' staff walked the sidelines like a shark. Talking to players, encouraging them for the most part, correcting when needed. The staff of the Colonels sat on the bench with the exception of the head coach. He seemed to yell most of the time and you could tell from the bleachers that as the game progressed, his coaching did not. I'm not sure if this is a normal thing, or if it is a one off. But you could tell it effected the players. What ever scheme they were playing (it was hard to tell from the lack of possession) quickly eroded as the "coaching" from the side line was translated into bickering amongst the players. Then it just got quiet. From what you've said, Cov Cath has been living on murders row for a few weeks. Their rankings reflect that as they have only played 5 in region games and won 4 of them losing to Cooper in a close 2-1 game. I've seen Cov Cath play well, really well once this season. It looked as though Cov Cath had several players on the bench, but not dressed. (injuries?) If they can get their starters back into the game, and some on field leadership, I think it will put the wind back into their proverbial sails. Time will tell, and it is getting short.

I haven't seen all of the teams play yet so.... I will say, from the teams in 9th region who I HAVE seen play, everyone is in a building year. In my opinion there are some "good" programs, but no excellent ones. Humbly submitted.

Neither team played their best game last night. The first 15 minutes of the first half belonged to Cooper. Solid defense. with a good buildup in the defensive third. CovCath's midfield and defense were definitely working overtime. CovCath got their feet underneath them and controlled the next 15-20 minutes with a goal in the 18th. In the last couple of minutes of the half, Cooper equalized with a long ball into the corner with the Jaguar player fighting through it to pass out to the edge of the 18. Easy goal as the defense was stacked in the corner. They went into the half tied 1-1 Coming out in the second half, both teams came out strong. Possession was about 60-40 CovCath, until.... Cooper scores on a through ball that sailed over the Defenses head as a Cooper player flat out beat the back line and the goalie who was coming off his line to defend. A simple juke to the left, and around the goalie as the ball trickled into the net. That took all of the wind out of the Colonels sails, and the rest, as they say is history. "Same stuff different game"

For someone who apparently has never played, he was impressive. Basketball players (especially centers and rebounders) make excellent GKs. Strong hands, no fear of going up in a crowded space, or of contact. Practice makes perfect, but he definitely represented his school last night.

B Fedders is a Senior Basketball player. This is his first season in soccer. The SHHS goalie was injured preseason. To be fair, he had a good night in the goal. I think CCHS troubles are less talent related and more coaching related. They appear to be playing an entirely different game as opposed to last season. Different formation with 2 in the defending 3rd and a full midfield that more often than not, are in each others way. The old adage that "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is old for a reason. If CCH wants a winning season it would seem that they either need to change how they're playing, or improve on what is obviously not working.

With the introduction of sports cameras like the VEO2 and I-pads connected to Wi-Fi and YouTube , live streaming has become a realistic way of schools broadcasting/livestreaming games. Covid was the best and worst thing to have happened to this. Schools with "large programs" primarily football and basketball invested in some rather pricey equipment to livestream these games in an attempt to offset the revenue lost when stadiums and gyms were closed. Some schools made a significant amount of money this way. Now that fans can attend in person, that revenue is all but lost. Unfortunately, the schools still see dollar signs from the pay per view model that was previously so successful and now refuse to allow anyone to live stream for free. I have a VEO2 system that I paid for out of pocket, along with the annual subscription which allows me to livestream worldwide for free. But the school doesn't want to lose their $5.00 per stream. Schools and particularly ADs are more concerned with what they take in at the door (or per stream) than building a long-term audience. When kids who ordinarily do not attend a game, can watch it live on TV or any other device connected to the internet and can interact with it they may begin to follow the games with more interest. Family members might as well. It could absolutely lead to more fans showing up on game day. I can tell you that the dedicated fans, are coming regardless.

Of Carrolls 4 goals the second and third were definitely well deserved. Their first goal could/should have been called back for a foul. The foul that led to the PK in the final minute was a horrendous call. There was zero contact prior to the Carroll player falling to his knees. The defender ran into him while he was falling. The AR was right there and did not make the call. The center Ref was mid field and blew the whistle. Referees are human, and a part of the game. Last night they were just a slightly larger part of it.
