I think Murray just might be that much improved over last year. They stayed within 10 of Male. Now mind you that was before the football state championship game last weekend so I don't know exactly how much Male was missing for that game. But I think Graves is going to be very good and Murray might surprise some people.

I agree. 4 of their top 7 guys on the basketball team are 2-way players on the football team and haven't had any practice time to this point. Like I said in a previous post Bubba Daniel, a starter, had a sling on his arm last night so that's definitely concerning. Either way it was a good early season game for both teams and fun to watch.

Just going off of scores it seems that Murray is much improved this year. They are 1-3 but the 3 losses are all against stiff competition.

One of Mayfield's starters was hurt in the state championship football game I guess. He was at the end of the bench with a sling on his arm. Hopefully it's not too serious. Mayfield still seemed to be in somewhat football mode committing close to 30 fouls.

I think the next 3 teams behind Mayfield in region 1 are underrated. Tilghman, McCracken and Graves are all very solid teams. Mayfield's 2nd game of the season is against Briarcrest Christian from the Memphis area. I think they are pretty good. They beat LexCath by double digits. They play in a holiday tournament with Lafayette so maybe they will get to match up with them. They have UHA on the schedule too. For the most part I do agree with you though, fairly weak schedule. And in my mind they are ranked about 10 spots too high.

I just looked at the new classifications and realized Caverna and Fulton County are in the same district. That is a 3 1/2 hour drive for a district game. Wow.

McCracken and Daviess have been in the same district with over a 2 hour drive. And Fulton County and Russellville have been in the same district and it's a 2.5 hour drive. That's one downfall of the 6 class system.

Mayfield in the past 43 seasons starting in 1976: Final Four appearance in 36 of 43 years (84%) State Finals appearance in 23 of 43 years (53%) State Champion 12 times in 43 years (28%)

Mayfield tried too hard to establish the run and wasted too many possessions doing so against an overwhelmingly bigger, stronger team. Mayfield might have the best passing game in the state. They didn't necessarily show their full potential in this game, barely missing on a handful of deep passes where the receiver had a couple steps on the defender. In my mind if Mayfield would have went to the pass game earlier and more often they would have had a much better chance to win this game. No matter how good your defense is, a great passing offense is hard to defend in high school and that's where I think Mayfield blew their chance. They should have thrown it 10-15 more times than they did. With all that being said, CAL dominated the line of scrimmage, and more times than not that is where the game is won and lost. It also didnt hurt that they had, by far, the best athlete on the field if not in the state.

Mayfield is a few spots too low. Franklin-Simpson and Johnson Central are both several spots too high. But overall looks decent.

This post is to recognize a great run over the past ten years by the team that I am partial to. I welcome others to post on here the numbers of other teams that have also had amazing stretches such as this one. Let me take you inside the numbers of Mayfield Football since the 2009 season: Record: 138 wins; 11 losses Record at Home: 78 wins; 1 loss (their lone home loss was to 6A McCracken County in OT) Playoff Record: 44 wins; 5 losses Home Playoff Record: 32-0 (Current winning streak of 42 games at home in the playoffs. Last loss was in 2003) Played in the State Championship game 9 of the last 10 years winning 5 State Championships. I would say the one knock on the Mayfield program could be that even thought they have won 12 State Championships they have also lost that game 11 times now including this year.

I've heard before that it was the first high school in the area so it was originally named "High School." Then once other high schools were formed it became Louisville Male High School but they just kept the "H" for tradition.

If I remember correct calpreps had this game predicted at 34-28 CAL. Pretty close.

The 2 best teams made it to the ship and the best team won.

For what it's worth I think the rain plays into CALs advantage.

These next four games have their work cut out for them if they're going to top these 2 from today.
