Lol. Pikeville getting no love at all hardly on this thread. Everyone talks about the "Eky bias" on the other site, this one leans to the west pretty heavily. Interesting perspectives. Mayfield won their class, not knocking them at all. But if you really believe it would be that big of s blowout, you didn't watch the games. Taking off the fan glasses (give it a try), both teams had stellar defenses, but Pikeville was far more explosive on offense, and consistently against everyone they played, was also capable of moving the chains at a clip of 3-4 yards at a time (except against Belfry), and that kind of clock control would be the difference maker. I would pick Pikeville in a game along the lines of 28-14 or 28-21, and if the D got turnovers, potentially bigger because they were one of the best teams in the state in 1A at stepping on the gas to take advantage of turnovers. That's exactly what they did against Beechwood. Went conservative before the half to milk clock, when forced into obvious passing down, got intercepted, and BW scored before the half, then came out and seized momentum to take the lead. Once they opened the playbook up again, Pikeville tied it, then expanded to a 3 TD lead in a matter of minutes. They were phenomenal that way this year.

Put on your PJs if you're going to be dreaming like that. Mayfield over Pikeville would NOT be a given, nor would South Warren over Belfry. Those actually would be very good games, IMO.

During the bulk of EKUs hosting years, they had a different president who, frankly, was not as involved in the community as they could have been. The new president seems much more driven towards community involvement and I think would help drive the excitement level up again. As for logistics, as much as I have/do travel, the trip wasn't a HUGE imposition, but it was a lengthy one. 4.5 to 5 hours is a long one way trip no matter who it is for. I just happen to think the majority of the "griping" is due to a point I referenced, a majority of the population would be better able to day trip where needed. $139.00 per night hotel rates certainly play into it as well (that's what I had to pay for basically a place to sleep for 6 hours). But make no mistake. If my son and his team make it back, we will do it again and again. But likely, the topic won't go away any time soon.

I don't know what happened that twisted your shorts towards EKU hosting the All A. Perhaps your drink was watery. Perhaps the weather that affected the tournament a couple of times while they were hosting led to logistics nightmares for everyone. I don't know. But perhaps YOU should ask him. And while you're at it, perhaps consider that EKU is more centrally located to the majority of the state population. That has an effect on non school affiliated fans who come to games, as well as the schools themselves. It's going to be a long haul for someone every year, likely. It just makes more sense to be closer to a larger portion of the population. One thing I'm curious about, knowing how well Highlands usually travels, as well as Trinity and St. X, what was the total attendance and then how much bigger would it have been (if at all) if one of he traditional big school powers had advanced? I know Pikeville was well represented, as was Belfry, for their respective classes. Beechwood did not bring as many fans as Pikeville. Would that extrapolate to a relocation? WKU had very nice facilities, I commented on them in a seperate thread. Fairly easy access, liked the parking garage (REALLY handy in the event of inclement weather), seating was good, and I thought at least for us, we did a good job of making it loud. If EKU expands to 20k or 22k like is discussed, it puts it on par with the seating at WKU. So the stadium size doesn't become a point of contention (it's not now, it's how everyone is basically on one side at EKU), parking and immediate area lodging become the only issues I see. Lodging from Richmond to Lexington is more than sufficient, so really that's out. I think parking would be the biggest thorn for EKU. I've heard of plans for expanded parking though. Interesting topic all around.

No, he wasn't. Nice try at getting a little heated back and forth going though. Would have been turning 16 just over halfway through his freshman season of high school. And anyway, he is a youngster compared to ME. That's why I referred to him as such.

Never. I agree. It's been a pleasure watching the youngster ever since his junior high days. As well as many of his teammates. I'm just thrilled my young son was able to play with them this year and be around them and learn how to carry himself on the field, because they were great role models for him and the rest of the team.

So y'all don't play anyone like Pugh up there? I KNEW it! Beechwood plays a weak schedule! Lol. Just kidding.

Castleman looked fairly stout to me. No sense using this as an implication or a way of "throwing shade" when Pugh wasn't being tackled very well by even bigger guys. He just turned 19 recently.

If that's the case, I submit to you the reason Beechwood lost then, is not the absence of Stringer and Sowards, he failure to develop depth behind them that didn't result in such an immense drop in size/depth behind Stringer. Look, we can debate the ifs and buts all off season. At the end of the day, Beechwood had more players on the roster than Pikeville did, so in theory, they should have been better able to absorb the loss of a player or two due to injury than Pikeville would. So you've got a disparity in impact immediately there. Then factor in that they were without Stringer for 4 weeks I believe? That's a failure of coaching to not have been better able to adapt to the loss. Pikeville won, it's time to drop the talk (by both sides) of "if so and so weren't out". Congratulations to Beechwood on an outstanding season. They were extremely worthy opponents and I have a ton of respect for them and the program.

I And yet they were able to have a ceremony, clear all fans out, media, do takedowns of all this stuff, clean, and hand over to KHSAA within about 2-3 hours in time for the first game of the evening on Saturday? Hmmm. I understand what you are saying, but my point is, this is something that they do EVERY week. It runs like clockwork. It is quick and efficient, and I'm of he opinion a better solution could have been worked out. Don't get me wrong. It worked out ok for Pikeville, but really was unfair to both teams to have one day less of preparation for the game, while some schools got an extra day or two. Like I said, overall very happy with facilities, etc. just thought it could have been handled better and definitely showcases the need for a contingency plan to be worked into the contract.

For a time, it was total number of yards on offense in the OT period. I believe Pikeville advanced over Lynch one year in the 70's due to the rule. By ONE yard.

Actually, it was the first time I've seen the explanation that CUSA requires control of the stadium 24 hours prior to kickoff. Thank you for that. If it was explained in an earlier thread, that would explain it as I'm just a trial member checking this site out and I've not read through all of them.

First, to touch on the VERY last point you made. Few complain then because they are leaving RUPP. At worst, generally speaking, about a 3 hour drive home for most of them. That's due to location. To the main gist of the conversation, my biggest issue was really this: WHY did they not have the 1A game on Friday night? Heck, they easily could have had 2 games Friday and still allowed WKU and whoever they played plenty of time for access to the field during the day Friday AND get it cleared in time for the noon game Saturday. While we stayed the night on Thursday and drove back Friday, I do know quite a few who drove back Thursday night after he game due to work commitments, and also some not able to pay the $139.00 a night (some were cheaper but booked) to just get a few hours sleep. Just absolutely no way you can convince me that the logistics could not have worked by having at least the 1A game Friday. It would have been preferable to have 1A and 2A Friday, which would have allowed for 5 and 6A on Saturday with 3 and 4A on Sunday at earlier start times.

Pikeville didn't get embarrassed like this by Belfry. Ergo, Pikeville is better than Lex Cath! Lol. Sorry. I had to add a little levity.

How about Daric Pugh at RB? Over 2000 yards rushing, 38 TD on the year, 239 yards and 2 TD in the state championship on 24 carries, state leader in scoring (I believe). And the 2 RB on the team, one is a 1010 yard rusher and the other didn't lead his team in rushing? Good players I'm sure. I want to make clear I'm not tearing them down. But I'm very puzzled how Pugh was left off this team. If it's a case of his own coach nominating, that's different because maybe he didn't want to be nominated. But otherwise, I would have to be reluctant to give this a lot of credibility as a true "best of the bluegrass". Just my opinion.

It was close. Pikeville had a really good crowd. I would say that 5700 number is fairly accurate.

Oh I understand, that's why I qualified my statement with "relative to 1A" and that they were not on the level of say, an Alex Roy or the young man from Beechwood. Just pointing out that they WERE capable of passing and passing well, but Pikeville defended the pass very well too. I'm very aware, having watched film, of just how dangerous the Beechwood passing game is. I didn't mean to come across as defensive or slighting them, just pointing out what I think is a sometimes overlooked quality of the Pikeville D.

I kind of have to disagree with this. They've faced 2 what I would call quality (being relative to 1A only) passing teams this year. Hazard averaged 161 yds per game passing, and in the first game against Pikeville, had 114, in the playoff game, 84. Williamsburg came in averaging 143 yds per game passing and had 140, but I believe something like 45 or 50 was on their lone scoring drive when it was already 50-0 against the JV. These two teams both ranked top 10 1A in passing. Were they the level of Roy and Fieger (sp?)? No. But still quality nonetheless. I think Pikeville will surprise some at Bowling Green who haven't seen them play, or maybe think their numbers only reflect playing poor quality opponents. They've got some excellent athletes all over the field. Love this bunch of kids. Meant to address this to ATLCat. Sorry I forgot to quote his post so no one would get confused.
