  1. Marty was asked to stay on staff by Coach Allen as a bridge to the team, and accepted. It was easy and logical to ask him if he'd like to be head coach when Allen had to step down. It is my understanding that at that time he was named coach for the season - I may be wrong. So, that may or may not be interim. Whether he's there after this year, I couldn't say. Unfortunately, I can't speak to what the athletic department thinks/feels. That said, this thread was about Holmes & Dayton. Sorry if it is starting to get hijacked.
  2. Holy Cross named Marty Rankin head coach the same day Jerry Allen resigned.
  3. A change in family dynamics would no longer allow him the time to responsibly continue his head coaching duties.
  4. Which is the higher profile job? What if a person's end game is not to be coaching at the HS level forever? I believe it would be a huge + on someone's resume to be the person that turns this program around.
  5. She was a teacher in the building, right? Perhaps it isn't basketball related at all. Maybe she's leaving the school district.
  6. Boone County does have this rule in place. Teams cannot participate in events on Sundays witout BOE approval. From experience, I can tell you the BOE will allow the teams to play in the State Tournament - this is typically the only exception. The school has to request and receive permission from the BOE, and a school administrator must be on site if the team advances to Sunday.
  7. If IHM has one, they've chosen not to participate in the NKMSAA this year. They have fielded both 6th and 7th grade teams in the NKMSAA however.
  8. Boone County makes a decision on afternoon/evening activities later in the day - typically around 1pm. That said, in most of my experience, if school is canceled, they usually cancel evening activities are as well.
  9. I couldn't tell you the exact number. My understanding is that the girls were moved up to fill the freshman team for sure - some may be dressing JV/Varsity. I am also only speaking about the 8th grade team. I have no knowledge of movement with their other teams.
  10. Campbell County did not field an 8th grade team this year. Their players are filling the spots of the various high school teams.
  11. Thanks for the schedule! What I'm wondering is which team listed or players that will be playing are worth checking out.
  12. Yes. These are the scrimmages at Lloyd.
  13. Tips off tonight. Who are the teams/players to look out for?
  14. Northern Pulaski defeated Casey Co. 41-36 to win the tournament. The other 2 Final Four teams were Eastside and Southern Pulaski.
  15. 34 teams traveling to Lexington this weekend to play in the 8th Grade Girls State Tournament. Good luck to all that are playing! Who is the team to watch this weekend?
  16. It should have been when it came off the rim. However, the rebounder handed the ball to the official. That's when the whistle was blown and play stopped.
  17. The shot was made. The bonus free throw was missed.
  18. Based on the game action, it appears that the officials also forgot it was a bonus shot. They blew the play dead and gave the ball to the rebounding team (non-shooting team). A previous incarnation of this had the exact same situation happen. However, those officials awarded the shooting team the ball back stating the rebounding team forfeited possession.
  19. Can someone give me a definitive answer on how the following situation should be called? I've seen multiple ways in the last six months... The offensive team is fouled in the process of shooting and makes the basket. The official signals the basket good and awards the player the plus one free throw. The shooter then misses the free throw and the defense rebounds. They in turn give the ball back to the official thinking there are 2 free throws to be shot. I've seen it called as both a forfeiture of possession with the official giving the ball back to the shooting team out of bounds, and have seen the rebounding team given possession out of bounds. So, who's ball is it? Thanks!
  20. The all-tournament players for Conner were Corin Crawford and Joy Strange.
  21. I also believe you have to adjust what/how you teach according to your team. Some teams learn man to man better, some zone. Don't get me wrong, I am definitely a supporter of man defense and prefer it myself, but I think you have to teach to your team's strengths at that level. In many cases of school teams, you are lucky if you get 3-5 hours a week to practice, which, in my opinion, is not a lot of time. I think it becomes more difficult to coach up weaknesses due to these time constraints, and coaches may feel like it becomes more important to focus on the strengths and build upon them. Though it is coach's job to teach at that level (and all levels for that matter), it is still competitive basketball, and in many cases they are expected to put their teams in position to win games.
  22. First, it depends on the type of zone you are teaching. If you are using a 2-3 that doesn't attack, then I would agree with you. In order to play any zone correctly and effectively, it is important to have good man to man skills. Just because a team chooses to play a zone doesn't always mean they are teaching them to be lazy. Think of the top player in a 1-3-1 or 1-2-2. In my opinion
  23. My understanding is that the original brackets were not what was agreed upon by the AD's of the various schools at the beginning of the season. This is the reason for the second bracket - supposedly, the AD's wanted a clear winner from Districts 1/2 & 3/4. I'm not sure why there was another change made yesterday, and we may never really know the answer to that.
  24. I disagree with you about the two best teams meeting in the finals. In the case of the 6th grade girls bracket, it has been assumed all year that Highlands and Conner were the 2 best teams. Now, if they were to both advance, they will meet in the semi-final round. It doesn't matter how the brackets are set up, you aren't going to make everyone happy. The people running the league made a mistake changing them after posting. They were lucky to have the weather put a delay on the start in order to "correct."
