Rules Question

Featured Replies

Can someone give me a definitive answer on how the following situation should be called? I've seen multiple ways in the last six months...

The offensive team is fouled in the process of shooting and makes the basket. The official signals the basket good and awards the player the plus one free throw. The shooter then misses the free throw and the defense rebounds. They in turn give the ball back to the official thinking there are 2 free throws to be shot. I've seen it called as both a forfeiture of possession with the official giving the ball back to the shooting team out of bounds, and have seen the rebounding team given possession out of bounds. So, who's ball is it? Thanks!

If this were to happen in one of my games and I don't get the attention of the player who was trying to give me the ball, I would blow it dead and let the rebounding team inbounds the ball.

Good question. I'm going to copy and send to my buddies that do D1 games.

A few questions:

Did the officials also forget it was the bonus?

If they knew it was indeed a live ball what did they do when the player tossed the ball to them?

Bonus....? I thought he said it was a missed and one...

Sorry. You're right.

Same questions though.

Based on the game action, it appears that the officials also forgot it was a bonus shot.

They blew the play dead and gave the ball to the rebounding team (non-shooting team).

A previous incarnation of this had the exact same situation happen. However, those officials awarded the shooting team the ball back stating the rebounding team forfeited possession.

The shot was made. The bonus free throw was missed.

If the rebounder took any steps to give the ball to the referee then it's a travel and a turnover, if the player just handed the ball to the official and no steps were taken I could see there it could be blown dead and possession given back to the rebounding team but I'm not really sure how it's supposed to be handled.

Saw this sort of similar situation happen in a high school game once.

After the first shot of the game by Team A is missed Team B player is on a fast break and Team A player fouls Team B player as he is putting up a layup. Ref calls foul and ball goes in the basket. Crowd cheers. Scoreboard shows 2-0 for Team B. Basket is announced for Team B player. Foul is announced on Team A player. Team B player goes to foul line for the "And 1" and misses the foul shot. Contested rebound goes to Team B player who scores on a stick-back. Scoreboard says 4-0.

Ref who called the foul blows the whistle. After consulting with the other two refs they decide it was a 2 shot foul (as none of them saw the ball go in the basket on the layup) and the Team B player has simply missed the first shot of a two shot foul. They have the official scorer change the scoreboard back to 0-0.

Does the official scorer (remember high school game) has any grounds to correct the error by the refs? Can the refs ask him if the ball went in the basket?

The official scorer can aid the officials if he/she has definite knowledge.

Night after night, I hear the officials tell our official scorer that she's the fourth official. You know they never really plan on using that fourth set of eyes. Well, at the end of this last season, an official called a foul and awarded the player two shots. The problem is that the shot went in. The crowd was going crazy. None of the three officials saw the shot go in. The head official approached the scorer and asked about the shot. She told them it did go in and they then gave the shooter one free throw. So the scorer does come into play at times.

I know my story doesn't exactly relate to this thread, but Clyde's response brought this to mind.

In this game did the head of Team B coach explode?

Not really. His team was going to win easily. But the refs did go to the score table but I think it was just to have the score set back to 0-0. The trailing refs had no excuse I guess other than they just did not watch the ball. It was a strange start to a game but I guess mistakes can be made.

If the official doesn't "catch" the ball, and it tossed to them, and falls to the floor, it is a live ball. If the official blows the play dead, with no violation by rebounding team, inadvertent whistle. Put this one on the official(s) for not clearly demonstrating 1 shot to all players and shooter in lane. Preventative officiating goes a long way.
