  1. The team seems to be playing more as a team with timely hits when they are needed. The defensive side still needs to tighten up a little bit to avoid the big innings. If they do that they should be fine. It all comes down to the Boone/Conner gfame in first round of District play. Arguably, Maines is the best all around pitcher without a doubt. However, not even close to the best player/leader on the team. You lead by example with your play on and off the field. 33rd District should have 3 great games so whoever makes it into the 9th region tournament should have a chance to make a deep run. Good luck to all 4 teams in the 33rd.
  2. 5/7 BASE: Conner outslugs Brossart Conner junior center fielder Cameron Fogle sets the career stolen bases record last night against Brossart, I believe that Mr. Fogle sits atop several offensive categories in Conner High Baseball's record books. If I am not mistaken, he also holds the runs scored record, triples record, and maybe one or two others. This is impressive considering these are career records, and he's still got the remainder of this season, as well as next. Cameron is a two sport star at Conner and is getting a great deal of interest from multiple schools for his play on the football field, I wonder what, if any, interest he is getting from schools regarding a future in Baseball? We could be looking at a two sport collegiate athlete.. If anyone is interested, I saw a post in the football forum that has his highlight film from last years football season.. Kid is an impressive athlete.
  3. Jarod Kunkel, Darrin Wolsenick and Cameron Fogle. Jarod and Darrin will be a huge factor in protecting Drew, opening holes and giving Drew enough time to find Cameron. Between the 3 of them they probably have 30+ schools that have shown interest so far.
  4. I'm sure that coaches will be visiting Conner on a regular basis. You do realize that some of these coaches are visiting more players than Drew? There are 3 seniors that are getting quite a bit of attention also. With all the exposure comes a ton of expectations. I hope these young men can perform to that level when the time comes.
  5. rjs4470- I read that very same thing minutes after posting.. Thank you for the help thou
  6. That is how I thought it worked, but just wanted to see if anyone else had any other information.
  7. That is what I thought, but there has to be some type of registration process.. Becasue someone who is good enough to be drafted, may not want to be drafted (playing another sport in college etc..). Then a team would be wasting time and effort drafting said player.
  8. Im curious to know if anyone is up to speed on how a player, or player's parent would go about registering for the MLB draft during the player's senior year? I have always been curious if the players have to actually "declare" or if they are automatically eligable to be drafted.. Thanks
  9. I know it happened against Scott one year, 2003 I think. When was the other?
  10. I posted that coaches cannot make 1st calls. They can answer phone calls from players. They cannot return voicemails. If they answer the player's phone call, they can speak. There is nothing against the rules there. When it's being posted that Drew is being invited to games etc.. that gives the impression that he is being called by coach ___ from ___ University "Drew, this is coach ____ I would like you to come to the spring game", or recieving letters in the mail inviting him to games.. If that was the case, it's against the rules. Again, not trying to make anyone mad, or hurt anyone's feelings.. Good luck this season Mr. Barker, you and your team have a real shot at state..
  11. NCAA Recruiting Rules. Official Visits. http://graphics.fansonly.com/schools/text/manual/graphics/docs/compliance/football.pdf Here are a few links laying out the guidelines.. One from Texas Tech specifically.. I certainly did not mean to ruffle anyones feathers, and never once said anything negative toward Drew.. I just think there is a lot of unecissary pressure being put on him as well as others who are in his graduation class, because they technically can't even be recruited yet..
  12. Again I want to say that from watching him play on one or two occasions, and talking to those that follow the conner program, Drew is a very talented player, and will have the opportunity to play at the next level, for many different schools, I'd even say he'll have his pick of the litter.. If he is not being contacted directly, how is he recieving invites to games? I am not saying anything negative about Drew or his talent level, I just feel like there are many people putting presure on him. And there are many people who are not aware of how the recruiting process works. It is very detailed and date specific. Sophomores are not getting offers, because that is against the rules. A player can begin to recieve offers and can verbally commit in the month of April during their Junior year. April 15-May 31 i believe is the specific time frame. They can then still recieve offers from other schools, and will officially sign their LOI (letter of intent) beginning in the month of February of their senior year. There are a few times that are "dead periods" or "quiet periods" in the recruiting process when schools cannot call. These processes are set into place so that a kid in high school is not bombarded and overwhelmed from colleges chasing him down 24/7. They want to make sure that the high school player is mature enough to handle the recruiting process. But this process begins when the player is a junior in high school.
  13. Sometimes you cant help how the schedule fits in with the class trip, spring break, etc.. I know many times teams have games on prom day and sometimes the end of year tournament falls on graduation day.
  14. Very sad to hear about.. Im sure the player would rather have his health than the $. His family as well.
  15. I agree, but somehow the Boone V Conner game is always a hard fought one.. Seems like the players on both sides always seem to strap it on a bit tighter for this one.
  16. I think the players would really enjoy getting to play at a college stadium. Like others have posted, most will not have the opportunity to play at a venue like Nippert after they graduate. I understand about the financial losses of moving a home game to a neutral site such as Nippert stadium, but sometimes you gotta take the financial hit, becasue after all, these are kids, and for some playing in a college stadium would be a dream come true. I think the game should have gone as scheduled at Nippert. Regardless of where it's played, it will be a good game. Both teams are quite talented.
  17. The young man is walking into a strong program. G-Town finished 3 in the country last season NAIA, loosing to Carrol in the national semis. Georgetown is not rebuilding this season, they are reloading. Mr. Speaks will have a few new pieces of jewlery before his playing days are over. Congrats!
  18. For the most part Freshmen in high school are still growing and maturing as young men and players. If the freshmen team is bad, I would not read too much into it. Many times the teams consist of many kids who haven't played or have played very little together, so they are still learning eachother, the new playbook etc. High school ball is much different than pee wee and it takes an adjustment period. Granted there are some freshmen teams that are powers and could probably compete at the varsity level (Trinity, X (cincy), etc..) But back to the point at hand, in my opinion, No, a poor record as a freshmen team will not make for a bad varsity squad a few years down the road.
  19. Having been through the recruiting process myself, I am quite familiar with the rules and so forth.. To my knowladge, schools are not permitted to contact (calls, text, or email) a high school player during their sophomore year at any point.. Sophomores can unofficailly visit as many campuses as they would like, as well as call a school to set these visits up. All expenses (travel, meals, tickets to the games etc.) must be covered by the players parents. Technically the only corrospendance they can recieve from a school during their sophomore year is a brochure about an upcoming camp. If a school is sending hand written letters, or making 1st phone calls and invitations, they are in direct violation of NCAA recruting laws. I am not downplaying young Mr. Barker's talent, because he is a very talented QB. But he is a sophomore, and if he really is being invited to all of these spring games, and or getting calls or texts from coaches, then those schools are violating the rules. Maybe it would be a good idea to keep such information off the web. I think schools these days are becoming more and more aware of the rules, and are trying to make it a point to follow them. Take what happened to the Baylor University basketball program.. It was just announced yesterday that both men's and women's programs will be hit with sanctions due to impropper recruiting practices. Again, I am not downplaying Drew's talents, becasue he is a big, strong, and talented QB. He is going to be recruited by many schools, but lets keep in mind that he is a sophomore, and has plenty of time to be recruited. Let's not mistake him taking unofficial visits to campuses, and attending their spring game as being recruited by that school just yet..
  20. Yes, IMO, telling a player they will get a reward for "taking a player out of the game" is a problem at any level. Becasue if you tell someone there is a reward for taking someone out, that has the potential to negatively influence a player and give them a reason to try to hurt someone. As I said before, it is a violent, barbaric game, and people are going to get hurt, that's all part of it. If a reciever running a deep post, gets lit up by a free saftey with a clean, non helmet to helmet hit, and that reciever has to come out, it's part of the game, and people accept it because it's what they sign up for. There is a certain risk involved. But if the same senario happens, and that safety lowers his head, turns himself into a missile and trys to break the reciever's jaw with a helmet to helmet, that is a problem.
  21. Look, I played for 15 years, pee-wee, high school, and college, and I coach at the HS level now.. I have never once heard the helmet sticker reward system explained by a coach saying "If you guys take their best player out of the game, with a good clean hit, you'll get a sticker" Like mentioned in my previous posting, the stickers, in most cases, are given for number of tackles, defensive or offensive scores, big plays on offense, INT's, big hits, or some other form of game changing play.. At no point have I ever heard "taking someone out of the game" being criteria for recieving a sticker.
  22. Littleluck- If you really believe that a sticker on a helmet, or anything of the sorts is the same as giving cash money to a player for hurting someone, I suggest you take a step back and rethink. Putting a cash offer on the table for injury is going to make someone TRY to hurt another, in turn leading to cheap and dirty hits. Kids do not go out on the field and say "Man, Im going to roll up this QB's leg, so I can get a new sticker for my helmet".. Really? And you mention the only reason the Saints got in trouble is because of the league's liability? How about what was going on was illegal, immoral, and just plain stupid. Those guys were intentionally trying to cause bodily harm to another, and recieving cash in return. In most states, that is a crime. Just because it's done between the white lines of a football field, does not make it any less illegal. Plain and simple.. A helmet sticker given to a high school kid for his play on friday night, is not the same as a pile of money given to a professional adult athelete for intentionally hurting another player. There is simply no comparision
  23. Even if you take a player out with a clean hit, there is nothing okay with getting a cash prize for it.. have some respect for the game.
  24. I know the coaching staff out at Scott very well, and they are all stand up guys.. I would expect nothing less from Coach and his staff. That is refreshing to see a group of young men pitching in to help others in need. Helps them to see how lucky they are.
  25. I think they will ultimately be safer.. Less bullets up the middle, fewer third basemen getting rockets their way.. These new bats are very comparable to a wooden bat. If a kid has the size, strength, and ability, they'll still be able to go yard. For the most part I think the idea with the new bats was safety, not to eliminate "cheap hits"
