KHSAA does not even allow you to condition after you have played your senior season. How are you able to participate in a prep school program? Can you cite any regulations that could be interpreted to allow this?

I had the chance to attend the Trinity and Moeller game last fall here at Moeller. I had a chance to look at both teams up close and I was stunned at the level of physical maturity on both squads. Most players had full facial hair, complete muscle definition and definitely no baby fat. These guys were collectively a lot closer to their 19th birthday than their 18th. My son on the other hand, will have completed his high school eligibility at the ripe old age of 17 years and 4 months. He took his first varsity snaps while still 14 years old. Somewhere along the line, we did not get the memo that says you are supposed to hold back athletes in school and we are paying the price now. He will be competing for scholarship opportunities with athletes that are 12 - 18 months more mature than he.I wish I could keep him in high school another year, but alas, I'm sure KHSAA would have something to say about it! I am at a loss on how best to deal with the situation. Any suggestions?

Dixie and SK will both score points. Whenever a top level player like Durham graduates it takes a year , or more, to make up for that contribution because other players just don't develop as fast when they play with a superstar. Ryle has experienced this with Elliot and SK has experienced this with Simpson/Laurence. I would not expect much from Campbell. I don't think anybody knows what to expect from Boone. We are still waiting for Ryle to adjust to the graduation of Elliot.

I am just a casual HS baseball observer, but I am also a Boone County taxpayer. In reading some of these threads, I notice schools are still using their own fields and was wondering, given all of the public money that went into Freedom Field, why it was not used more.

How can you make that deduction from a spring game? The track and baseball athletes are probably not participating and those are some of the best athletes on the team. Did you notice anything different about the offense? Any discernable influence from the new OC? Who played QB?

There is an example in Football at Boone County right now. Although, there is a change in residency as well. I'm going to ask a related question. Is the hiring of an assistant coach that brings a player into the program a deliberate tactic to avoid the transfer rule?

There seems to be a lot more passion regarding basketball transfers than in other sports. Why?

Clyde, it is indeed difficult to see your kids get yelled at. But it is one thing to have your kid get yelled at in coarse of correction or discipline, it is another thing completely if the yelling is not in this context, or simply necessary to be heard. I have seen coaches yell at kids because of their discontent of being on the losing end of the scoreboard. When coaches yell at kids out of frustration, then that is not appropriate and necessitates intervention.

This is just flat out NOT TRUE and I have seen it first hand. If you are play the same position as a Mr. Basketball or Football and you are in the same class or older, you will never see the court or field. Furthermore, if you play the position as the child of a coach you can almost always count on a conflict of interest! I am also aware of bulling taking place on teams that is actually supported or encouraged by the coaching staff.

You cannot get athletic scholarship money sitting on the bench at varsity games, or being a career JV player. I have witnessed too many situations where the coaches' agenda does not include playing the best players or even winning. This is particularly true when the coach is also the parent of a player.

When my boys were cut from their middle school bb teams, neither myself nor my spouse went to the coach/AD/admin to complain, we signed them up for swimming and they have loved it. Sometimes getting cut sends the message that you really need to be investing your time elsewhere.

Todd Downs has been an assistant bb coach at Boone County for as long as I can remember. He has also coached extensively in AAU. He also coached my boys at Boone's basketball camps, and his son Bo played with my elder son in pee wee. From my experience, Todd is a really good guy and has done a lot to develop youth in Boone County.

I can empathize with your position that student athletes should not be coddled and they they need to be able to constructively accept correction and discipline. But there are also times when an athletically motivated transfer can be justified. An example would be being good enough to start on other teams, but relagated to JV because you have a superstar player in front of you.

Parents and athletes already have complete control of where they attend high school and participate in sports, up until their first varsity competition.
