I haven't watched SK enough over the years to know whether Marksberry is a great coach or a terrible one. But I do know that way too many folks overly discount the impact a great coaching staff has on a team's success. Those folks tend to think it's just a matter of the johnies and joes. Well a great coaching staff develops poor johnies and joes in to average players; average johnies and joes into good players; and good johnies and joes into great players. That's what helps define great coaches.

You obvious want to make kids remain at their schools, but I see it as a check and balance system. I think all schools should have open enrollment. If you want your school to prosper, to grow, to overachieve you have to make your school the better choice. My school has doubled in size since I graduated 20 years ago, we have open enrollment, every school in area has open enrollment. How does a school grow with open enrollment? Easy, they compete and make their school a better choice for prospective students. If a school does that, they will grow and prosper from open enrollment. If they don't', well they will suffer.

 

You don't make your school better by chaining students to the building. You make your school better by making students to want to go there.

Are there things at play here besides just sports? I have nothing to do with SK or any other Kenton County schools, but isn't SK kinda seen as a "rural" school, with Dixie a little more "urban"? That would have had a large impact on where I chose to go to school, sports or no sports.

I am pretty sure they did not run the spread offense when Bishop was there. They ran the same offense for 3 years because THEY HAD THE SAME QUARTERBACK THERE. Last year they tried several things that did not work. Let's face it SK's offense looks similar to most other HS offenses right now. They all try to do the same things just like the NFL HS football is a copy cat league. If you went to every football program in the state of KY over 1/2 would run some version of the spread.

IMO Marksberry was fortunate enough to have Lawrence in the wings as they were trying to run the spread with Bustle, and needless to say they were having little or no success. I agree that a number of teams run a version of the spread offense, but I still contend that a great coach will tweek his offensive philosophy to expliot the skill set of the athletes he has on his roster. That may mean running a modified version of the spread, or maybe run the spread situationaly.

So if I am reading right he had the right pieces in place to run the spread but not the right quarterback and after a few games he noticed this made the switch and led his team to state. I watched a lot of SK games over the last few years and I can tell you they ran a lot of different stuff last year as compared to the Lawrence years. My argument is far less about Marksberry's coaching abilities and far more about a fan base that does not support the program. There is more to supporting a program than just showing up at the games. You talk to any of the SK faithfull and the conversation immediatly goes to what is not happening in the program instead of what is. The coach should do this or this kid should be playing. Look I am ok with all of this talk as long as it is not filtering down to the kids and undermining what the current staff is trying to do. Since I have moved out to Independence I have watched a team that was lucky to have 30+ players sophmores to seniors to now having over 80 sophmores to seniors. Talent levels are always going to fluxuate with public schools more so than private, the key is to keep the numbers up and keep the excitement in your program going. The current coach has taken this program to levels it has never sniffed before and until there is a drop in participation or support from within the school I believe you need to fully support the staff.

I dont care what 6 A NKY team you throw in front of Trinity or ST.X you can not match talent for talent with them. It might stay close for the first half but you re not going to beat them. I have played Trinity a few times during my day and we had some good teams but we had to play our butts off to keep them close. During the yrs that the "Bulldawg" is talking about is just the same. SK would not have beaten Trinity or St.X.

Coach Marksbury is a good coach and to call him a racist is pure BS. This man treats his players fair, if you produce in practice then you play in the game. No matter your skin color or background.

To say Marksbury cant keep the boys in his own backyard is BS also. This happens at BCHS, Ryle, Cooper, and so on. Its not just SK and has been happening for years. This past yr was rough but so was the talent level. I think they got out of this class what they could. So back off coach and get a life. No one will ever be 100% happy with how the HEAD COACH coaches his team.
