I think the Bengals should sign Mike Wallace (Steelers not using franchise tag)

I think you found the smoking gun Jim:

Last month, The Sacramento Bee reported that the San Francisco 49ers inquired about Wallace during the first week of free agency, but did not pursue him because he was seeking a contract in excess of the eight-year, $120 million contract Larry Fitzgerald signed with the Arizona Cardinals.

Wallace is a very good player but why spend all that cash on him when you can draft a potential stud for pennies on the dollar.

I agree Wallace priced himself out of the market. For his sake he better have another big year.

Well before he decided he wanted better than Fitzgerald money, it would have been smart to try to get him. Because you hit on a big key word, you could draft a POTENTIAL stud for cheaper. However potential means nothing in the NFL, and sometimes people never reach that potential. Wallace showed already he can play and play really well in this league. However as the Guru said he made the price way to high for himself. He deserved a big contract but not the type of money he wanted.

Like I said before, no way Wallace will sign contract below his market value and I didn't see a team willing to pay what he thought his value currently was. Now I am hoping that Steelers can come up with nice contract extension to keep Wallace in black and gold for a while. If that doesn't happen and he lights up the league this year, you can bet the bank he gets tagged...

Teams had their shot at Wallace this year, now next shot might be 2014...
