It's comical how a thread that was started to congratulate a team about winning and to commend another team for playing extremely hard turns into a thread about a ridiculous complaint about t-shirts. (I'm sorry they didn't have any 3x's.)

 

The girls from WV did an excellent job. NCC played great defense - obviously the best defense that WV has faced the entire tournament. Ron Dawn is an excellent coach! Sometimes you win games that are not pretty....that is what WV did today. Great job by the girls to battle and great job by Coach Clink and the rest of the coaching staff.

Congratulations to the Lady Bearcats. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to write a book several years ago about the history of the Walton Verona Basketball Program. The girls were the first to play a real game in Northern Kentucky at Walton in 1913. So in their 100th year the first team became a state champion.

 

You have to laugh at the moaners otherwise you go crazy! Congrats to both for providing such a good show.

We are on the wrong thing this is about congratulating the girls on a great tourney run and the first state championship. I mean we are talking about t shirts, t shirts, are we talking about t shirts, t shirts?

Heckuva game but we are talking t-shirts. Classic.

 

Thanks Clyde for shifting into a forward gear. On that note, I do want to say this about the game from a defensive perspective.

 

After a quarter of NCC's defense, I said to a buddy sitting next to me that there was no way they could keep that defensive intensity up for 4 quarters. I was flat out wrong. It seemed that it got more intense as the game went on. NCC could not hit many shots, but they almost won with the old saying "offense sells the tickets, defense wins the game". They did an incredible job of neutralizing the offensive advantage WV had with their phenomenal defensive effort. They contested shots, contested and denied passes, they were physical, and they forced a bunch of turnovers. NCC put themselves in a position to win, because of an their defensive effort. They made things very hard for Walton and the Bearcats do not win today without Kara Taulbee. She hit a couple of huge and timely, contested 3 pointers, that without them, NCC is putting on the shirts.

 

Walton's defensive strategy looked somewhat the opposite. Not that they didn't hustle, but they didn't extend out and smother the perimeter. They laid back and gave up some open outside shots. This worked well for them, when they started rebounding defensively, as NCC only shot 21%. I suppose it was better to give up the low percentage shot, than to let them drive to score or get to the free throw line. I dunno.

 

Just thought it was interesting to see the contrasting defensive plans based on taking advantage of each teams possible "weakness".

 

Great game, and these two are scheduled to play again Wednesday, although I heard today it may get canceled as one of the teams is getting to close to the maximum number of games they can play. We shall see.

Go WV, great win!

Congratulations to the WV Girls and their school. This is a huge accomplishment.
