If Tim Tebow was an Atheist

Featured Replies

If Tim Tebow had this exact same season and was a known atheist would he be as beloved?

I say no.

I say he would be vilified and people would say things like, "imagine how good he would be if he believed in God."

ZERO chance he'd be regarded in the same light.

If he didn't bring up his belief's on a regular basis, even if that was Atheism, it wouldn't even be known.

Not even close. Even if he was squeaky clean, helped impoverished children, etc it wouldn't be close.

What if he made it known the same way he does about his faith?

If one person in the media knew he was an atheist he'd be asked about it eventually.

Is he really beloved? I get the impression that outside of the religous community he is almost hated. I think his faith adds to the media infatuation but I can't figure out why so many want him to fail. He's a heck of a football player, maybe not a pure QB, but he's tough, supports and credits his teammates, does whatever he can to win and works his rear end off. I can see why guys on his team get behind him, even if they don't share his faith. I personally think that if he was an atheist he'd be better received in the football communitity for the qualities I listed and be villified by the religious community, pretty much opposite of what is happening now IMO.

Yes he is beloved. You can probably name all 6 people here on BGP who don't like him and the 5 people nationwide who don't like him. I haven't seen anyone this universally beloved since Michael Jordan. The religious community cares about football now because of Tebow. My preacher devoted part of his sermon on Tebow trying to say the same thing you said. Who doesn't like Tebow? Everybody loves him. If Tebow wins the Super Bowl Facebook may spontaneously combust. More people blow up my news feed when Tebow wins than when UK does.

I am truly fascinated by the love affair people have with Tebow. Like he's the only great guy to ever play a sport.

I think it would be a very interesting dynamic if he was an atheist. I want to know what all the Tebowites on BGP would say about him if he was atheist.

There's probably quite a few atheist, or agnostics (which is actually what most athesist are but won't admit it) in the NFL, but they don't make a big deal out of it and it goes unnoticed. Tebow is front and center with his beliefs and makes it very visible, and the reason for these threads and discussions.

I think if he was an atheist but kept it hush-hush, it wouldn't be a big deal, even if the media knew about it. He would be getting the same attention that he is getting now---which is because he has his team where they are now but with limited skills compared to other NFL QB's. That's what makes this news, not his religion.

I'll take your word for it but when I listen to sports talk radio he is constantly beaten down by guys like Cowherd and Mark Schlereth. I just like watching him play and like unimaginative NFL guys act like the read option can't be successful in the NFL. I don't love him but I'm kind of rooting for him but it has nothing to do with his religous beliefs.

I disagree. A lot of times when you ask people about Tebow the first thing they mention is his faith. He has become an inspiration to a lot of people simply because of his faith. Some would even argue that he is who he is because of his faith.

I am more amazed each win that he is able to be successful with their offense. Very impressive. I don't like him and like you it has nothing to do with his religious beliefs. It does bug me sometimes but it has nothing to do with me feelings towards him.

PP, you must be privy to other shows/interviews than the rest of us. An overwhelming majority of people spew hatred and venom for Tebow every chance they get.

Also this question is pretty silly. It's like asking "If LeBron James was only 6'0" would he be as dominant?" You can't just change a core characteristic of a person and expect things to be the same.

Lebron's height at least helps his play. :D

I only have four. You, Clyde, Jim, and I.

Who besides Merrill Hoge, Mark Schlereth, Stephen A. Smith and I saw someone mention Colin Cowherd. Who else is there? Everything I see is pro-Tebow.

I think it is a great question. Tim Tebow's faith is mentioned with Tebow almost exclusively and as I stated I know of plenty of people who like him because of his faith. Some people will even question your faith if you talk bad about him. :D

I think it's a fair question. You admitted in your question that his faith is a core characteristic?

If Lebron wasn't a tool would you like him? That's a better question than if he was 6'0". I'm not talking a physical change.

And I'm curious. And it's a Monday at work.
