Their gas often runs that much. Kinda hard to travel to a game, grab a hot dog and a coke for supper, travel back home for a Jackson. That twenty bucks probably covers four hours time, on average when factoring everything in.

 

Not to mention the occasional cross word from the court/bench/stands.

 

I'm just thankful that most of us are willing to pony up a few bucks to watch a game. Otherwise we might actually be stuck with 20-buck refs.

I don't get paid for gas when I go to work or $40 an hour or whatever they get for a game that runs an hour to an hour and 15 minutes, are you kidding me?

I think some of the issue is that many of the freshman games start at 4:30. Hard to find a ton of people to get there at 4 o'clock for a 4:30 game. Also at some games I have been to, $1000 for the game wouldn't be enough for me to officiate with the way coaches and fans act. At other contests, $20 probably would suffice with an easygoing game and crowd.

Very few workers get paid for gas to and from work but that being said most jobs that you have a long commute to and fro last more than a couple of hours. So if whoever sets the fee directly or indirectly allows a higher rate to help on gas so be it. It is an abusive and thankless job and I know because in the heat of the game I can be abusive myself. They deserve a payment as high as can be fiscally managed. I wouldn't want their job and listen to people like myself criticize them.
