January 2, 201214 yr Love this Bible book, and there is a movie "Gospel of John" that goes right with the Book. here are some of my favorite verses. "In the beginning was the WORD, and the WORD was with God. and the WORD was God". The word "WORD" had a meaning for both the Jews and Gentiles. Jesus was with God at the beginning.
January 3, 201214 yr Author Jesus gets a surprise visitor in chapter 3. He comes at nite so no one can see him. He also helps later with the burial of Jesus. He still doesn't get what Jesus was saying..."Can I go back into my Mother's womb to be born again? The famous verse in 16, is the most talked about ever.

More thematically he comes at night because he "does not know." Darkness represents confusion in the symbolism of John.
January 3, 201214 yr Author More thematically he comes at night because he "does not know." Darkness represents confusion in the symbolism of John.Nice point, but I also heard he was timid in his faith, but his position might have something to do with it. On his faith John 12:42/7:50:51/19:39 shows he was learning. In 3:11 Jesus rebuked Nicodemus but also the other Pharisees as well. 13 Nicodemus asks "How can this be?" about the New Birth. New Birth is By The Son, Cross, and Faith. In verse 15 the term "Eternal Life" is used By Jesus for the first time, and I think about 8/9 more times we see this term, but to me it carries so much weight. Eternal life, is just that, and Jesus doesn't mess around, Jesus also speaks more of Hell than eternal life. And also more than any other person in scripture.
January 3, 201214 yr Author You are talking about Nicodemus. He was a Pharisees and ruler of the Jews.Sir, you are Correct! Welcome to the SEC, I need four tickets on October 13th.

Don't know if you would call him timid but confused in his search. (Much as all of us are) John is the only place the person of Nicodemus appears. He appears three times. The second is to keep the Pharisees from plotting vs. Jesus and they shout him down. The third is at the cross where he seems to come full circle and joins Joseph of Arimithea to claim the body of Jesus from the Romans. Quite a public statement and growth from the first encounter. He did that which the disciples did not, showed up in public to be aligned with Jesus.
January 3, 201214 yr Sir, you are Correct! Welcome to the SEC, I need four tickets on October 13th. Thanks, this scripture is one of my pastor's favorite ones to preach from.
January 3, 201214 yr John 1:1-18 are among my favorites in the entire Bible. John leaves absolutely no doubt about who Jesus was/is.

Women showed more courage and ran the risk of being arrested too.
January 4, 201214 yr very nice, I actually have been bashed in a bible study when I commented about how really weak the Disciples were when Jesus was being killed on the cross. Just Peter, James and John.
January 4, 201214 yr I love John's gospel. Perhaps my favorite book in the Bible, and certainly my favorite of the gospels. Maybe that is because the other three share more similarities and John's is very unique when compared with them. It is full of great verses and passages. I love the I AM statements from this letter. And, I agree with Fastbreak about the beginning.
January 4, 201214 yr very nice, I actually have been bashed in a bible study when I commented about how really weak the Disciples were when Jesus was being killed on the cross. Women showed more courage and ran the risk of being arrested too. The beauty of that is the support it gives to the resurrection. If the resurrection was a farce, why would these disciples who were too scared to stand with Jesus during his arrest, trial and crucifixion, suddenly do an about face and risk their lives on a daily basis preaching that very same Jesus after his death?
January 4, 201214 yr Author An Outstanding comment.""" Paul even says that in scripture, I believe its 1st Corinthians 15 something. "If there was no resurrection, our Faith would be useless". To give them credit they did much better later in their lives with the Gospel. Even though we don't get much info on over half of them. John/Mark/Luke/Peter/Philip/Andrew are men mentioned after the Gospels who was around Jesus before he died. Mother Mary is only mentioned two times after the Gospels, her role was done after raising Jesus.
