How surprised are you at the job Coach Kidwell is doing and his Red Devil team overall? Without Davidson at center and with Hunt transferring to Boyd County, no one gave Russell much of a shot at winning 7 games all year much less before January. Just curious what others are thinking.

I think Coach Kidwell and Coach Webb are the early leaders for COY in the 16th.

I wouldn't argue that at this time. It's still early, though.

They are playing well. They have some good players. If they had Davidson and Hunt I think they would have been the team to beat in the 16th. I think right now they are just a notch below Ashlan, Rowan, and West. but we still have 6 or seven weeks left in the season.

the region is exceptionally weak this year and the only game of note, so far, is the always underachieving Muskies of Greenup. Other than that, they should have won the games they did. They should only lose 4-5 more games during the regular season: Ashland x 2, Rowan Co, West Carter and possibly Greenup or Ironton. I don't know what Ironton has this year.

 

They are currently 8-4, having beaten:

Raceland (5-6) twice

Fairview (5-5) twice

Bracken Co. (6-9)

Bath Co (6-7)

Lewis Co (2-8)

Greenup Co (5-6)

 

I can't get excited this year until they beat Ashland, Rowan or West. The rest of the region is @ the lowest level I've seen in many years. This is a good year to be a little better than average. I wish Russell had Hunt and Davidson playing this year. That would have them in the top tier.

I agree. They deserve mention with the top 3 IMO. They will be scary by years end.

I think Russell is average. They played a poor schedule strength wise. They play Portsmouth next. Portsmouth isn't it's typical strong self. Still better competition than the Fairviews of the world.

Ashland (7-6) and Rowan Co (7-5) are not tearing it up so far this year but they along with possibly West Carter are well ahead of the next tier in the 16th. I do see more room for improvement from the top two. So all is not lost for the one coming out of Morehead this year.

I agree. Russell hadn't played anybody. Kidwell has been a huge disappointment at Russell. Portsmouth whipped their butts tonight.

Lots of single-A sized schools on the Russell schedule this season. It looks like they've cut back on their travel budget as well. I don't follow the 16th all that closely, but unless you count a couple of jaunts across the river, it looks like the Devils don't get out of NE KY at all.

I've heard alot of good things and alot of negative things about the program this year. I think it's clear that they will live and die with how Skaggs can get good shots. They truly have no other serious scoring options but need everyone to pitch in their share. They miss Davidson cleaning up the glass and Hunt could create his own shot and teams needs defensive help to guard him which gave Skaggs room. Like everyone else it no doubt will be a season of what could have been. I wouldn't overvalue Russell, but I think in this region they have a shot.

Portsmouth is pretty good, IMO. Always very athletic.

Hard to believe but West's schedule has been even softer than Russell's this year and it doesn't get any harder. They have one test the rest of the year against Ashland. So far they are 13-3 but 1-3 against decent teams. Schools do their kids a disservice by completely padding the schedule. It's Cupcake City Baby! Especially this year as the 16th is down.

 

Lafayette is 5-10 and has beaten West by 33.
