Well Doc,

 

the region is exceptionally weak this year and the only game of note, so far, is the always underachieving Muskies of Greenup. Other than that, they should have won the games they did. They should only lose 4-5 more games during the regular season: Ashland x 2, Rowan Co, West Carter and possibly Greenup or Ironton. I don't know what Ironton has this year with West Carter.

 

They are currently 8-4, having beaten:

Raceland (5-6) twice

Fairview (5-5) twice

Bracken Co. (6-9)

Bath Co (6-7)

Lewis Co (2-8)

Greenup Co (5-6)

 

I can't get excited this year until they beat Ashland, Rowan or West. The rest of the region is @ the lowest level I've seen in many years. This is a good year to be a little better than average. I wish Russell had Hunt and Davidson playing this year. That would have them in the top tier.

Plaudits abound for the schedule maker @ Fleming Co.:clap: Not padding the schedule with cupcakes will only make your kids better. Great job with your scheduling. I stick with what I said before the season started. Ashland and Rowan County are the two teams to beat in this region. But, this type of schedule breeds improvement.

I agree the one other game they won't win is Chesapeake, OH they are very good beat Ironton at Ironton and East by 30+ on a neutral floor.

I think we can look to the pathetic schedule as any resemblance to a strong start. They need some more Brackens, Racelands, Lewis', Fairviews and Morgans ahead.

I believe 63rd district seeding dictates that each team play home and away.

My point is that Russell and West Carter's schedules are padded with cupcakes, even beyond the games they must play. The 16th region being exceptionally weak has only aided the cause. West Carter has an unbelievably soft schedule, even compared to Russell's.

 

Ashland and Rowan Co are the only two teams with a shot to win the region at this point and they're not that good this year.

I think that even though the schedule may seem weak, it is hard to blame Russell when the area teams are down. They are required to play District opponents twice. They do play Ashland, Fleming and Rowan twice along with Ironton, Portsmouth and Chesapeake. That doesn't sound horribly soft. Again, I started this thread because with Hunt and Davidson out and with unproven players, I thought Russell's start and Coach Kidwell deserved a little credit. So, no disrespect Duck but I think Russell's schedule is maybe 4th best in the Region and may have a great shot to win their District. Now, can they win the Region? As weak as it is from top to bottom, they have as good as shot as any.

Sorry to disagree Doc, but players quit or leave at Russell and the others all the time. (I.E. Josh Gross, Kasey Clark and Sizemore) You play with what you got. And no one comes out of the 16th this year but Ashland or Rowan. If West gets a draw with those two in the same bracket, they have a chance but they can't beat both. Russell should win their district easily unless Greenup can finally put it together. They have the athletes to win the region this year but I don't believe it will happen. If Greenup could get the same draw I mentioned for West, they'd have a shot though.

If Ashland and Rowan would end up on the same side of the bracket, definitely the draw plays a huge part in getting someone else involved. But, there is not a team in the 16th that can beat them both, if they draw opposite each other.

Regardless of who wins this Region it will be interesting.

Saying it certainly doesn't make him correct. lol As long as those two are in opposite brackets, the writing is on the wall for everyone else. I'll gladly eat crow if I'm wrong but I feel 99.99% sure this year. I called this one before the season started. Greenup Co is the only team that has the athletic ability to beat both of those teams and for other reasons, it ain't happening.
