Great game by both teams. How is the kid from HHS that took the elbow. The worst no call I have ever seen. The big guy from BBHS should have hit with a flagrant foul.

Hope the injured Highlands player is OK. He caught an unintentional elbow from Jennings.

 

Agree it was unintentional. It was not, however, his 1st of the evening. We commented on 2 of the previous occasions when it happened in the 3rd qtr (when he had 4 fouls) that an HHS player was going to have to "step in" to one of those elbows to get his 5th as he was wearing them out on the offensive side.

 

The kid appears to have been taught to "clear space" after rebounding under the basket by gripping the ball tightly with both hands, extending both elbows and then rotating back and forth. Obviously, being much taller than most other players, that puts the sharp edge of his elbow right at head level on those other players. He needs to clear the ball above his head, establish a pivot foot and move with the body rather than just the elbows. At his height, nobody is going to take the ball away from him without fouling him if it is above his head.

If he is not rotating his torso then it is a violation. Just because the ball is in the chest doesn't mean the player can then swing his arms from side to side.The arms have to be following the movement of the torso.

It was a no call because a foul had already been called prior to the elbow contact. Therefore it happened in a dead ball situation.

 

Joe is a big strong kid who does tend to get beat up with regularity. I think if the officials would "protect" the rebounders, situations like this would not occur. Highlands was in a must foul situation which created the occasion for the event.

 

I agree with the poster above who said that Joe needs to learn how to step-pivot with the ball to clear space. What he is trying to do is pull the ball through, however, when repeating the process it gives the appearance of throwing elbows.

A better question might be why were two 'Birds still hanging on him well after Jennings had been already fouled, and play stopped??

It appears to me that Jennings starts swinging the bows immediately after snagging boards so I have a hard time buying the "guys harrassing him" after the whistle as a legit reason to throw em. He needs to pivot and put his hip into the defender while "chinning" the ball. He has 30lbs and 5-6 inches on most opponents so he's not going to get many sympathy votes. He may be the most improved player I have seen this year. I know he and a few others have worked with Weifit on their strength and diet. It definitely has helped his game and Burns is another one who is a stud already. Best of luck to the Stangs this year.

There could still be a foul on a rebounder who is deemed to throw elbows (again, not saying it happened here) even after he was fouled. If it were to be deemed intentional or flagrant a foul can be charged.

Its all the perception of the referee and in this case they watched the whole thing transpire and decided it was unintentional.

Wondered about that as well--Seemed to be some "parental involvement" or something of the sort?? Looked like it was defused quickly by some cooler heads.
