It sounds like a little bit of both states are at fault for me, but the Louisville/KY at large Allstar game is a joke. I would love to have the KY/TN game back. This year was terrible coaching for the KY at large team and half of the best players in the state either weren't nominated or didn't play for one reason or another. I went the game this past Sunday and I will never go back.

 

I've seen a fair number of all star games over the years and used to question the coaching and the playing time provided to certain players. But I've come to realize that due to the fact that coaches only have a limited amount of time to practice their players, they understandably default to those players that they've coached or coached against. Plus their is the additional consideration of coaches liking to run "their" systems because they are obviously familiar with them. Put a stud running back on a team coached by a coach that likes to throw the ball 75% of the time, and the stud running back gets few carries and little playing time. I experienced this in the Border Bowl game a few years back. Offensive coordinator had his QB on the team. OC's team during the regular season threw the ball a ton. That's what he tried to do in the Border Bowl. The stud running back got few carries but was effective when he ran it. Ky team got beat. If you didn't "understand" what was going on, you walked away shaking your head about the coaching and playcalling. Likewise, some coaches like big O linemen because their teams zone blocked during the regular season. Smaller but quicker O linemen didn't start. When they did get in the game, they were actually more effective than the starters, but the O line coach for the all star game was more comfortable using a zone blocking scheme so the bigger O linemen got the majority of the playing time.

 

Don't put too much if anything in any all star game other than the fact it's a great opportunity for kids to spend some time with kids from other high schools and develop friendships. If you look at all star games as an opportunity to earn a scholarship or to prove that players from one area are better than the players from another area, you have unrealistic expectations in my opinion and more often than not will be disappointed.

I personally think the game needs to be moved to January. The summer game isn't really a good idea because of the kids going to college to play ball. I see both sides of the arguement, but I like the game in January as well.

Uh oh. Somebodies kid didn't get to play much.

I played in this game, and I enjoyed it being during the summer months. Having a full week of 3-a-days certainly helped us from a team aspect. This is only possible if kids are not in school. You move this game to mid december or january and now you've got to deal with transportation, basketball, and lack of practice time because of school. Some may say that playing in the summer may interfere with college preparation, but I don't buy it. "Interfering with the scheme/playbooks" is a sketchy excuse at best. What coach would be willing to put their entire playbook in the hands of an 18 year old incoming freshman? Really? Don't know why Kentucky chose to have the in-state game to right after the season?????

If TN's best were playing against KY's best I would care. As it is/was they weren't so I don't.
