The states say they can, just not in a contact sport. Also with the kids haveing to choose there school in the 8th grade that helps the kids and coaches.

I understand the state rule, just wanted clarification on the catholic high schools because some schools seem to allow 8th graders to play varsity and some don't. Was curious if it is a Diocesan rule or a school rule. If a Diocesan rule then I would assume they need to get permission first from the Diocese to allow them to play.

Would think most the Catholic schools would have a hard time fielding a team or at least their JV team with out the help of the younger kids. Holy Cross would have never had a team several years back with out 7th and 8th graders.

I understand and completely agree. However I thought that 7th & 8th graders just played on the freshman and JV level, not varsity. I thought the catholic schools did not allow anyone to play varsity until they were at least a freshman. Again, just a little surprised it is a school decision and that the diocese really has no say in it, (they usually have a say in most everything the school does, I thought) at least that is how I am understanding it.

At NewCath a freshman team was established last year made up of 6th & 7th graders from the feeder parishes for the purpose of getting these young ladies prepared for high school Fastpitch. Most of the girls on the jv and varsity now only started playing fastpitch when they got to high school. So with starting a freshman team with the younger ones, who are now starting to play fastpitch in summer leagues, they will be better prepared for JV and Varsity when they make it to "the hill". All 8th graders play on JV ONLY. Except in the case of special circumstances (an extreme need for a key position player) and this has to get approval from the administration. An example, Courtney Sandfoss was allowed to pitch as an 8th grader because no one else could. The main reason 8th graders are not allowed to play Varsity is the age difference between them and the older girls (JR's & SR's). Even though it's not much of an age difference there is a BIG difference of what goes on and is talked about in high school than grade school and it is best to keep that separation.

Based on what Lawnboy said NCC does not typicall allow any Junion High players including 8th graders to play varsity and I don't believe Brossart does either. Not sure about St. Henry.

The bold type is a huge concern. When Brooke was a 6th grader she said she wanted to try out for HHS softball was very affraid what she would hear on the bench since at that time they did not have a freshman team just JV and VR. She made the team and i had several talks with her about the thigs she heard on the bench and also the coachs kept her close to them when she wasnt playing. The talk is different from middle school to Sr in high school

When Holy Cross started a team 4 years ago it was easy for the younger kids. They had no Jr's or Sr's and most the kids were in the 7th or 8th grade.
