Student in Trouble Over Tweet About Governor

Featured Replies

I would accept the punishment for tweeting during school, but I would in no way apologize. I hope this girl sticks to her guns.

So do schools not allow their students to use their cellphones at all while on field trips? They can't text while they're on the bus? No FB on the bus?

No idea. My sisters use their cell phones all the time during school, but I believe it's technically against the rules. But from my understanding it's commonplace.

I agree. And just to clarify, it is the school wanting her to apologize, not the governor's office. Correct?

I think it's hilarious that anyone would care what a person with 60 followers has to say.

Does the Governor's office follow-up with every person who tweets something negative? They look poor in this one.

No doubt. The governor's office sucks. Sounds to me she was ahead of them all.

Governor looks bad for being thin-skinned.

The school looks bad for making her apologize.

She should not have to apologize unless her parents make that call.

The conversation the principal had should have centered around a poor use of words instead of it being centered on the fact that she criticized an elected leader.

The school should take this opportunity to spend time on the Freedom of Speech issue for all of their students so they do not fall into the trap that many on here do of thinking that you can say anything at anytime without fear of losing your job. They should be taught the finer details of the FOS issue that many of us missed.

If the school's only action is to try to punish the girl then they have failed to take advantage of a great teaching opportunity.

I think it's hilarious that anyone would care what a person with 60 followers has to say.

Apparently after the news hit about this incident, she's over 4,000 now haha!

That speaks more to our society than it does to the girl.

I'll pass on following a girl who calls a governor "mean" and saying he "sucks."

The young lady has declined the request to write the letter.

I agree. And just to clarify, it is the school wanting her to apologize, not the governor's office. Correct?
You got it.

Wow. All this attention and uproar because of a tweet by a high school kid. Who cares? Talk about our media being completely out of wack. The Governor's office should have made a joke out of it if anything.

Why is this a media issue?

She's 18, correct? I don't think the parents have any more of a say in this than the school.
