Scrimmages at Highlands Nov. 26th

per nkysportslog: "After watching 1st several minutes of this Highlands vs Lewis County game, its safe to say the Birds will rely heavily on their fball plyrs.".

I'm guessing this team is not real deep at the moment. Are there players walking the halls not playing? Numbers? What's up.

Considering they have 10 kids playing football and 8 of them will probably get varsity minutes I would agree. However, with the style of play that Flynn has implemented it will take those guys until atleast mid January to be in basketball shape.

They got up and down the floor very quickly today and played pressure defense all over the floor. They had 5 or 6 frosh playing including one that started. They ended up winning both halves against Lewis County.

If they can get the football guys in condition quickly they will run teams to death and pressure them like crazy.

"Highlands certainly is playing more uptempo this year. It'll be interesting to see them when they get everyone back."

Here are some of my takeaways today at the scrimmages.

I saw just bits and pieces of the SK/PC game. SK pressured the ball well and they have several good guards. Chambers gets to the basket very well and can finish. Ayers is a hustler who is long and plays well around the basket. For PC, they are well coached but many times the kids just werent doing what Simms drew up. Monroe is a strong lefthander who just couldnt get shots to fall today. You could see the frustration on his face but he keeps his composure and plays hard. Rering is a nice ballplayer for PC, he is also a long kid who likes to bang. Outside of those two and the curly haired guard they really lack experience it seems. SK will compete in the 8th Region, Steiner gets the most out of those kids but he will be challenged by bigger teams like North Oldham and Oldham County. Best of luck to both teams it was fun watching teams from 2 different Regions.

Cooper was quite frankly the most impressive on the day and North Laurel had a couple bigs that played exceptionally well along with a crafty point guard. Cooper is absolutely huge and they play very hard for Tim Sullivan. He gets alot out of those boys especially Alex Webster and Drew Shelton. Those kids are bangers and Shelton has a very smooth shot from the baseline that found the bottom of the net a lot today. Webster goes hard to the rim and has an impressive physique for a HS player. Maniacci gets a lot of the press but he struggled a lot today. He plays very hard and looks like he is having a great time out there. I know he can block shots very well and compliments the other physical kids well but he will need to get better offensively. He definitely has a ton of upside with his motor and size though. I think Cooper will surprise some teams this year.

Highlands really pushed the ball and pressed hard in their matchup. They played a handful of freshman along with some other kids who are very inexperienced no varsity minutes. I thought they responded well and played very hard. You constantly heard Coach Flynn yelling Go Go Go...after every miss or made shot. They will run some teams out of the gym with their depth once the footballers return. With that said though, it will take them atleast until Mid January to get into the type of basketball shape required to play this style. The kids running in it now are dragging their tongues after 2 minutes and they have conditioned for 45 days it will be interesting to see how long the football guys can go. They will love the style though because its very fast and aggressive.

St. Henry won 4 of 5 quarters.

Scott must not have played well. Their coach wouldnt even let them eat the free pizza provided by the Highlands folks after the game making them leave.

Who played well for the Birds??

The curly haired guard is junior Garrett Appleman. A quality shooter and all around good player indeed...

I was impressed with a couple freshman Herret and Feggins. Witte, Gronotte and Hinkel all Juniors played well. Witte attacked the basket strong and played very good defense. Gronotte snagged some nice boards and made some nice buckets. Hinkel drilled some long 3's, the kid can hit from behind the arc. Another Junior Zac Carter can get up high and made some nice plays around the basket on stickbacks. Buten pushed the ball extremely well and will lead the break very well this year. A couple other kids I wasnt as familiar with Kyle Rheul who I think is a soph shot the ball very well and hustled on defense. I was very impressed with the effort out of all of those kids. They all understand the system well and get after it.

It is kind of scary how well they played that there are 8 or so other kids who will be added to this style of play and they are all very good athletes. Towles is 6'5 and Nick True is 6'6 230 and provides very good defense on the post.

Yes, he is a very nice player who compliments Monroe well.

Did Gabe Antrobus play for Pendleton? Can't believe he was not mentioned in the recap.

I am not familiar and there were no programs to identify the kids. I just knew Monroe and the tall kid from hearing the fans encouraging him by name. Also, I was watching from the door and saw bits and pieces.

He did play. He had a decent game, definitly not his best though. SK was very physical.

Antrobus struggled shooting the ball all game, and he struggled to get open shots. Not his best game by any means.

Going to take Scott better part of December for young players to find their roles and get acclimated to first real varsity action. Carr is one of the best coaches in the state as far as getting the absolute most out of the talent available. However, he is replacing a 3 year starter at the point who rarely came off of the floor and ran Carr's system very well. This just isn't plugging in and reloading but replacing the most integral position in that system. Give the young guys a month of being coached up in game situations and see if they don't go on a run in January.

Scott lost their best three players so I would expect them to take a while to adjust. Kellen Smith was very good and Haynes was a very good complement for the Eagles. I will miss watching them play but am glad they won't be playing against us again.
