The "everybody letters" is a new one. I don't think it's reached NKY as far as I can tell.

 

I was kind of surprised myself when I found out. I'm pretty sure most of the schools in my area do it that way now. We used to have one coach that would keep track of who played each quarter of the game. We would make sure the coach saw us play, when we were freshmen and sophomores. That "letter" meant something to us.

When I played, you had to play in 12 quarters during the season. Now that included if you just ran in for 1 play or the whole quarter, as long as you were in at some point in 12 quarters you got a letter.

 

Funny story, we actually had a "Take a Knee team" mostly of Juniors and Sophmores that didnt play on varsity, specifically so they could get a "Quarter" towards their letter count.

Here's how last night went down. Six players earned their 3rd letter including an SEC 'er who wasn't there. Another six or so earned their second. Somewhere around 20-25 earned their first including two freshman who played in the last two games. They then announced all the remaining players who were working towards a letter. The two that struck me dumb were Brandon Hatton, not mentioned. And Evan Hicks, the QB while pike was out. I coached one of these boys and am related to the other. No reason IMO.

Did anyone go and ask the coach what the policy is/was and why these kids were handled the way they were? That would seem to be the most logical thing to do rather than asking the question on BGP.

No, last night was his last banquet as head coach and not the proper forum. Called today to ask but he's off till Monday.

The West Virginia high school in which I participated football, one had to play at least one play in 21 quarters during the 10 game season. Keep in mind this was more than 35 years ago.

I lean towards the policy being liberal on earning the letter. The commitment football players make is huge. One quarter played per game sounds like a good way to do it.

Not sure on the requirements but Cohorn was the qb when Pike was out and Hatton did not finish the season with the team. Seems silly to give him a letter. I am sure he has one for basketball.

Maybe the commitment is huge, but having a liberal policy does devalue the letter to those that actually "earn" it. Kind of like giving out twice as many state titles in football than any other sport in the state, but that is a whole different topic. :jump:

I guess that is where I differ with you and perhaps others. My question to you is what do you have to do to "earn" it? I think the kid who works his tail off every day on the scout team, does every workout with the team just like the starters and participates in all the off season programs does deserve a letter. I see the letter as recognition of effort and being a key part of a team more than some status symbol limited to the starting players only.
