Perhaps I've missed it, did Awlaki formally renounce his citizenship or did the Department of State officially determine that he was no longer a citizen of the US? If neither of the above, while I'm no expert on citizenship law, I'd think Awlaki was still a US citizen at the time he was executed.

 

It's a very dangerous and slippery slope if the Executive Branch on its own gets to decide when a US citizen has taken actions that justify execution without legal process. If I hold a rally on Fountain Square and encourage people to revolt against our Govt to the point of calling for people to assasinate the the President, should the President be able to have me executed without a trial? Lordy, I hope not.

 

There is no doubt that I'm glad this guy is no longer breathing; but add me to the list of people that feels very, very uncomfortable about it. It's one thing to wrongly wiretap a US citizen's phone; review their e mails; and otherwise invade their privacy rights without due process. It's something quite different to execute a US citizen without a trial. Members of the far left that were incensed by Bush and the Patriot Act have to be totally livid that the candidate they supported for President has gone much further than Bush did while President. I'd think even moderates are troubled by this too.

Yes, based on the information I posted earlier, he was not a U.S. citizen at the time of his death, because he had taken up arms against the United States.

I draw the line on civil rights when it comes to guilt and innocence. This particular case involves a known terrorist on the US assassination list. I really don't see what the problem is. His own actions is why he is, scratch that, was on that list. For me it is cut and dry. For me this is an entirely different situation than spying on citizens such as myself but if Uncle Sam thinks they may learn something from watching me play Modern Warfare 2 then be my guest. When hasn't the government been watching all of us? With the Patriot Act they are simply telling us about it.

So just as an example, say a person held a rally like the one LN described above, and said that the President is evil and needs to be removed by any means necessary, you'd be okay with the government ordering a sniper to take them out?

If he had no trial how do you not know he was innocent? Isn't it innocent until proven guilty?

I think we had enough evidence on Awlaki to pull the trigger on him. I am genuinely not bothered at all with how we handled this particular situation.

I'm not particularly bothered by his death either. But I am quite bothered about the potential precedent it sets and that's where I feel an ardent civil rights supporter would agree with me...

Our disagreement is about the precedence in this case. Not civil rights. IMO, he renounced his rights and the more I read it seems he was a Yemeni citizen. Not to mention, when his father sued Obama to get his son off of the assasination list the judge threw the case out. Everyone knew when the opportunity to kill him came then Awlaki would be killed. For this particular fellow, he lost his civil rights as an American when he was put on the kill list. He wasn't your ordinary I hate the POTUS, I hate Americans kind of person. He was a threat to our country and many innocent citizens and I will gladly dismiss his civil rights and applaud his murder instead of having to mourn over thousands of innocent Americans again. He had it coming.

 

I want the government to do what it feels is necessary to protect our country. I'll make my decisions on the civil rights on a case by case basis. That's the best I can tell you. I won't always agree with what the government may do or how they do it but in this particular case I have no issues with how they took care of business.
