You will rarely hear me side against the police but in this case I've been told too many stories by those who live in the area. I was also told by several different people who live in New Albany, Clarksville, and Jeffersontown that the local police are not happy with the state police in that area.

Apparently the door was cracked open and he let himself in. And it doesn't matter if alcohol is involved (especially just on the porch) , you can't just walk in someone's house! It's not illegal to consume alcohol.

Every single person 21 or older? Drinking alcohol on the porch is actually a crime although it's not often enforced. Open door, loud music, alcohol on the porch, no answer to knocking would likely sound like a reasonable welfare check.

Are you serious? You're trying to justify him walking in? He heard music because the door was cracked open, and he was on a bike. It couldn't have been very loud because I was sleeping. Again, no one was on the porch, he saw beer cans. No answer to the front door is likely because no one was down there. Even when he entered he didn't give any citations because no one was doing anything wrong. I was furious that he was even in the house.

If they have proof that there is underage drinking, I believe. That certainly wasn't the case for my house.

Cops in J-Town are pretty strict. Watch yourself there as well. Just do the right thing and you'll be just fine.

When did I say they should ignore minor crimes? Flashing you're lights slows people down, that's the ultimate goal of speeding tickets, right? No one in law enforcement would ever admit that it's not really about the safety of citizens as much as the revenue. And honestly, it's not close. Unless the someone is going 30 over, does 7 MPH over the limit in the fast lane really put people on the highway in danger? Potentially, but we all know that's not why they're stopping them...

And the entire point of a minor in possession of alcohol is to keep the alcohol out of minor's hands. When they write the ticket and don't even bother taking or dumping the alcohol, it completely defeats the purpose. The underage drinking continues. That's a nice try reaching to take an officer's side, though. I get it HB, you love law enforcement and will never admit when they are wrong. Take off the Aviators for a minute.

As usual when we are talking about law enforcement you miss the entire point in your attempts to argue that police do no wrong. You like the police, we get it---but at least try to see the point that someone is making. What I'm actually complaining about is that the police officer was doing the public no justice with shenanigans like this. This was nothing more than a revenue generator as I could have been a fugitive, had fake registration/insurance, been driving a stolen car, etc. but the cop wouldn't have found that out. When the police pull stuff like this they are after stats, $$, and nothing else. To me that is not police work or what I want my police to be doing with their time.

 

Let me get this straight. A police officer who is given the authority to enforce speeding laws, who is writing a speeding ticket, is doing wrong? Wow...I'm all for exposing abuse of power in law enforcement, but you are reaching a bit. You might not like the ticket, but it's not the police officers job to give warnings out all day.

 

And you are claiming he ran none of your information, but how do you know that? Did he go back to his/her car? It's possible he ran your license plate, and got all of your information before he stopped you. It probably takes about 15 seconds to get your information back on your car/license.

 

And if you honestly think that each individual police officer is concerned about the money that comes along with a speeding ticket, you have no clue what you are talking about. To the people who decide the cost of a speeding citation, it may be all about the money. But to each individual police officer, it is not.

 

However a fool proof solution to NOT getting a speeding ticket from these jerk cops who have nothing better to do? Drive the speed limit. You know the limit, you know the consequences. I do not feel an ounce of sorry for anyone who has ever been pulled over or given a speeding ticket, myself included.

But at least I can admit when they do something correctly, which is rare where I live. I'd love once for a police officer to admit that their duties are not done entirely for the good of our society, but rather to make money and give power hungry humans a chance to be in control. (some not all) A cop giving a ticket for flashing their lights is given solely because they feel someone is slowing down them reaching their quota.

If you want to call it a revenue generator then sure it is. You have to have police in the community it's as simple as that. Now you can fund that completely thru taxes, which means every one pays more. Or you can fund it thru taxes and revenue that comes from the citations and tickets etc that is coming from people who broke the law and thus had to pay for it.

And you are claiming he ran none of your information, but how do you know that? Did he go back to his/her car? It's possible he ran your license plate, and got all of your information before he stopped you. It probably takes about 15 seconds to get your information back on your car/license..

He never stepped away from the window and never got on a phone/walkie talkie/tin can with a string. He was standing on the side of the road with a motorcycle parked beside him. The car I was driving wasn't even mine, so I fail to see how he got all my information from the plate even if it was ran.

I don't like tickets, but I'm not here complaining about the 14 or so other tickets I got. This is a ridiculous trap with the sole purpose of preying on out-of-towners to generate money for the state of Indiana. The intent of the ticket was definitely not to "police" anything...

Regarding your information, police don't have to run every person they come in contact with. Some people would whine and complain because the officer took too long running their information, regardless of how long it took. Others will complain because the officer didn't. Police are in a line of work where it is very hard to please everyone and it's very hard to do every single thing right. It's not so hard to monday morning QB anyone's job, including a police officer.

 

I guess I was confused, because it looked to me like you were saying it was about the money to the actual officers. I guess I was wrong.

 

And about those poor out of towner's getting preyed on by those mean police. I feel no sympathy. There are plenty of speed signs posted everywhere. Speed limits are there for a reason, and police are there to enforce them.
