I enjoyed the game today and have some random thoughts:

TOG: Oh I enjoyed it also, starting at 9am with attending Mass, then breakfast and of course the game. The only negative was missing my daughter wedding shower.

 

Beechwood has a fantastic Class A Football team.

TOG: I can agree with you on this, very nice team but lack of depth this season might cost them a championship.

 

Vocke is very elusive and without him Beechwood gets beat by 50 today.

TOG: The young man is indeed a great player.

 

I don't understand the CCH coach staff, run the football. You tried to give the game away today, Beechwood couldn't stop you, once you decided running was a good idea you dominated Beechwood and it was the Men vs. Boys.

TOG: It was an outstanding game plan and the players followed it to a "T". You win game at the end of four quarters not after one!

 

I still think what I thought last week, CCH has a solid football team but not the kind of team that is going to beat Highlands.

TOG: Then again no one thought CovCath would win in 06 or in the Mud Bowl either. Games are won on the turf not on BGP's threads!

 

This games tells us Boone County is the favorite to win 6A in NKY.

TOG: I told you last week BC was the class of 6A. They played an outstanding game last week but came up just short!

 

Brady Reece from CCH is a stud. I wanted to mention this last week and didn't get to it. He played a fantastic game and ran Vocke down twice. Reece could play for any high school team in America.

TOG: And he is even a better Baseball Players and young man. OH BTW, he has also run down Gabe Gray in practice and Travis Elliott in a scrimmage game vs. Ryle!

 

It is a shame CCH and Highlands are in the same district.

Mayfield has to be encouraged by Beechwood's inability to play run defense.

TOG: So you are saying that CovCath Gabe Gray and his Road Graders, couldn't run on Mayfield?

 

The CCH public address system can barely be heard on the visitor side.

TOG: You have to please the neighbors!

 

CCH needs to police people standing in front of the visitor's stands. It was mostly kids but there were a couple of clueless adults blocking everyone's view today.

TOG: So Beechwood own fans were clueless to themselves? :lol:

 

If CCH's program continues in this direction Beechwood needs to consider dropping them from their schedule.

TOG: I enjoy the game, even when we lose. I love watching the Beechwood fans in red talking to the CovCath fans dressed in Blue like they know each other and or neighbors, which in a lot of cases they are!

 

And finally, Coach Rash put on a show at halftime. He got up on a table/bench and did his best Rocky Balboa impression in an attempt to fire up the Beechwood crowd. I am not sure if it worked but it sure was funny Coach.

Mayfield believed they would run all over Beechwood before this game was ever played. Why would they think any different now?

 

As to Coach Rash, that was awesome! No one has more passion than Coach Rash. Only someone who doesn't like Coach Rash would not like that passion and energy.

Neither QB looked good today. It was the worst I've seen Bir look since Ryle last year. He'll bounce back. Really good QB.

 

Vocke and Gray are a lot of fun to watch. Both can cut and get fast again quickly.

 

Some crazy bounces today. BW returns a kick and somehow the kid fumbles (not sure if he was hit or not) and it bounces to Vocke who catches it on the run and takes it to the house.

 

Reese's play also had a crazy/lucky bounce. He punched it hard from behind , the ball went another 10 to 15 yards forward, bounced straight up and Reese continued after it and caught it on the hop.

 

Max Nussbaum can flat play football.

 

Hats off to the CCH D. I can only remember one big run by Vocke. They did a not job when BW tried to get him loose outside.

 

Sam Burchell, soph LB, is a beast.

^ Agree with all Clyde except Beechwood did not try to get Vocke outside enough. They need to run that stretch play a LOT with Vocke, just like CCH did today with Gray. When either of those guys get one inch of a seam, they are gone.

I hate being wrong and maybe I talked my color man into believing what I thought I saw, but if you listened you heard us give credit to Bobby Beatrice for the 33 yard run with 53 seconds left in the first half from the CCH 20 to the Beechwood 47. I've been told that it was in fact Gabe Gray as this was confirmed to TOG by Gray and Beatrice. I can still see #24 running up that field which really has me concerned. :isurrender:

To try to make some sense of what the coaches may have been doing, and this is only my opinion, is that although beating Beechwood is nice, they are not going to beat everyone just running the football, so they stay true to what they are and that is as balanced as they can be; 40 rushes and 25 pass plays. My guess is they would prefer 30 each with 250 yards each. If something is being taken away they adjust like they did yesterday. Also, stretching the field once in a while does open up the run.

I will comment if it is ok. Yes, every coach wants balance. But sometimes you are who you are. You can't abandon the pass. My main point above about CCH being a running team is this. They dominate teams running the ball in Q3 because they commit to being a running team, not necessarily because they are wearing teams down. Think about it. A well conditioned team like Beechwood just had 15 minutes of rest, changed their defense to load up and stop the run in Q3 and CCH still was able to run the ball on them. Keep passing the ball but against HHS, there should be more runs than passes if CCH wants to win.

I would have to agree with Beechwoodfan - Cov Cath is just a little better. Their size in the offensive line is just a little too much. Honestly, I don't know why they bother throwing the ball. Every time I have seen them, when they put the ball in Gray's hands and let the big boys up front go downhill, they take control of the game. They did it against Dixie. They did it against Boone County. They did it today versus Beechwood.

 

That being said though, it is about Gabe Gray even more than the line. He is one heck of a back. Great combination of strength and speed. Very tough to tackle. And breakaway speed once he gets into the open. Although I have to give props to Max Nussbaum for impressively coming from more than 5 yards behind and chasing him down on one long run. Max has some serious wheels. Without Gray back there, even with the size up front I am not sure CCH wins the game.

 

Beechwood shot themselves in the foot again with turnovers. There were two key turnovers. One was just a very heads up play by a CCH defender who kept pursuing a pass play that was completed to Vocke, caught Vocke as he was juking around the last defender and heading for a TD and punched the ball out from behind. CCH recovered that one around the 10. The other big turnover was on running play inside the 10 when Erdman just lost the ball as he was going down. No big hit or anything that forced the fumble that I could see. The tape may show something different. Those plays really hurt. If Beechwood maintains possession and scores (they were moving the ball on both possessions), then we are looking at a game that goes down to the wire.

 

As to fatigue, I didn't see it. Adjustments, nothing different than what CCH has done in all their games. They come out in the second half and decide to be primarily a running team. IMO, if they do that to start the game, they would have similar success. CCH's strength is a power running game, giving the ball to Gabe Gray.

 

Other comments:

 

Joey Nussbaum won the kicking battle. Every kickoff with great height and through the end zone. His shortest kickoff hit 5-6 yards deep in the end zone with serious hang time. The kicking game for both teams was excellent. Talkers would be the #1 kicker in N. Ky. in most years. Nussbaum nailed some punts. McDowell though is probably the best punter in N. Ky. Hopefully his ankle injury is minor. Showed some guts continuing to nail punts after the ankle injury.

 

QB's - Bir was a little hit and miss today. I have seen him better for sure. Taylor Davis needs to stay focused and just keep working at it. He has talent but it isn't showing up on game day since the first game of the year. And for the Beechwood faithful, can we finally put to rest the "he should have started last year" talk. We are now four games into this season and I haven't seen anything that tells me he should have started last year. If you disagree with that, you are talking through prejudice either for Davis or against Colosimo.

 

Vocke had some great plays. He is something to watch in the open field. Beechwood needs to find a way to get him more touches in space on offense in these tough games.

 

I am not discouraged at all except it would be nice to play better against CCH. The turnovers are irritating and have to stop. When you get two evenly matched teams, turnovers decide the game and they did that today. Beechwood is going to learn from this game and get even better.

 

As to CCH, if they can find a way to get some stops on the Highlands offense, they can pull the upset. If they make up their mind to be the running team they are and control the clock, they could get it done. But stopping the Highlands offense is one serious challenge.

 

As to fitigue, I didnt see it ?????.....Usually I agree with you, not this time. The Bw kids were spent half way thru the third quarter. Normally you dont have the likes of Staten, Nussbaum, Erdman and Nussbaum over on the bench trying to catch their breath in a tight game. When an official is stopping a game to send a kid to the sideline and he is not hurt or there is no blood on him, then that is fatigue. The good thing out of all this is it was noticed by all. The Tigers will get in better shape as the year goes on. They will be ready for Mayfield, by the way, they also play thier players both way !!

I did indeed speak to both Gabe and Bobby after the game but anyone can make mistakes and that includes me and the players.

I personally will wait until I see the film to say you or we, were correct!

I can tell you that during that time frame, we were having a computer issue, so hold on until we view the tape!

BTW I haven't had time to listen to the game, so how did the Rookie do with Coach Conner at EKU?

I do not agree with CCH dropping Beechwood from their schedule. Most years CCH is not out of Beechwood's league. What always got me was CCH thinking they were in the same league as the GCL south. It is not like they were getting players injured, or losing by 30 at the half. The turnovers have to stop for Beechwood, even if it means putting in one of the other stud running backs they have waiting on the sidelines. The huge O-line is what dominated this game for CCH. To say the Tiger's have no run defense is not exactly true. As far as people standing, if the bleachers were raised a little higher this would not be a proplem. I would assume this was a bigger turnout of fans than a normal Saturday game. With all of the nice things CCH has done to their campus in the last few years, one would think both home and visitor side stands would have been upgraded by now.
