True. You never know with a neck injury. At this point, I'm operating under the assumption that Manning will be back for the 2012 season. And, if he misses the entire season, I think the Colts could very well be picking in the top 5, which means they might have a shot at Luck depending on who is picking above them. There are quite a few teams who won't be picking a QB in the 2012 draft.

 

So, would the Colts draft Luck with the intention of grooming him to replace Manning? And, how would that affect everyone in Indy knowing that Manning's replacement is actually a reality standing on the sidelines rather than some far-off myth? Especially, if Manning isn't as good post-injury or if his play starts to decline a 2-3 years from now.

 

I think it is an interesting scenario. Truthfully, the best case scenario would be a stroke of "Luck" for the Colts. They could potentially get one of the best QB prospects of the past 5-10 years, let him learn from the sidelines for 2-3 years from one of the greatest QB's to ever play, and then take over and they'd be set with a stud under center for another decade plus. It would be especially beneficial to the Colts for a guy like Luck to learn their complex system from Manning for a few seasons to ease the transition. Otherwise, the execution and tempo of their offense will change drastically.

 

It would be a little like the Spurs when David Robinson got hurt and they ended up with the #1 pick and Tim Duncan. It hurt them for one season, but paid off exponentially in the long run.

I don't think they'd start Luck. My thought was whether they would draft him, if in position, to sit behind Peyton until he retires. They obviously need to address the QB position. The fact that they haven't developed a backup has had disastrous consequences on them this year. Manning will be 36 next year and coming off a neck surgery that caused him to miss significant time (if not the entire season). They could end up in a position to draft Luck, sit him behind Peyton, and groom him to take over when the time comes. The problem is the potential for a QB controversy down the road. What would happen if Manning's play starts to slip a little. You've got an aging legend at QB who isn't quite what he once was, and a young stud waiting in the wings who has been sitting behind him for 2-3 years. That would be interesting. I wonder how Indy and how their fans would handle that situation.

 

If you are a team built to win now- and I believe Indy is- you draft guys that help you win now. Why take Luck number 1 to sit him for 2-3 years? Couldn't I get a guy that will get on the field right away and draft someone to develop behind Peyton in round 2 or 3 or 4? Indy is not a good spot for any other QB not named Peyton Manning- that is the reason they are in such dire straits with Collins and Painter. Indy would have to rebuild their offensive system if they got Luck because no one is asked to do what Peyton is with this offense. If you were going to ask Luck to do this, you would start over with him and his receivers and his system, not try to force him to fit what Peyton likes to do, IMO.

I don't disagree. I just think it's an interesting possibility.

 

I suppose the question comes down to whether you want to put everything you've got into winning now, or whether you are willing to sacrifice a little for the future to secure the most important position and give yourself another decade or more of stability at that position.

 

You'd also have to consider how much money you'd have tied up into the QB position, although the new rookie salary rules would help a little in that regard.

I don't really think Buschi comments are called for at all. Maybe I'm a little biased because I enjoyed watching Chad play in Cincy, but seriously? I think he came off extremely self-righteous and his comments were not needed what so ever!.

Absolutely. He came from Cincy to NE 5-6 weeks ago. What can truly be expected from him in week 1? He should be fine in time but how Ochocinco gets blasted for complimenting Brady and his performance is beyond laughable. It's like Bruschi hates twitter and Ochocinco and he finally got a chance(in his eyes) to blast both of them. He needs to chill out. He is dead wrong and so are Rodney Harrison, Kordell Stewart and Steve Young for siding with Bruschi.

Will the resurrection of Rex Grossman continue against the Cardinals hapless defense? How will Cam Newton fare against the defending champs and arguably the league's best defense? Chicago @ New Orleans - Da Bears are consistently underestimated, and I'm as guilty as anyone. They dominated Atlanta, a team many people are picking to win the NFC. And, the Saints were perhaps the most impressive losing team of the opening weekend. One of the best games of the week.

 

San Diego @ New England - The best matchup of the week, IMO. This could be an AFC Championship preview.

 

Philadelphia @ Atlanta - The marquee matchup because it is two NFC favorites and it's a Michael Vick homecoming. Will be interested to see how he is received, and how the teams respond.
