Top 25 Players in the last past 25 years(1980-2005) in your region??

Not so, my friend.

What has changed is the lack of knowledge of fundamentals. Or maybe it's just the lack of someone having the knowing to teach them.

Coaches today are so much more advanced than those of 30+ years ago.

It cracks me up to listen to people who are older, try and convince me the game hasn't changed. The only thing I will give you is some players have lost focus on the importance of a good mid range jump shot. Other than that players in the 9th region are just better basketball players overall than those of the 60's.

Its just that the talent level has changed. There really isn't even an argument.

The advantage that most of us "old geezers" have in this arguement to your statement is that we have seen and been involved in both eras. If you were not around and involved in the game during the 70's and then now then you probably dont really have a clue as to what I am talking about anyways. So there is no point in me even going any further with this BigStud. That's the problem with trying to talk to young knowitalls, you cant.

I'm not a know it all. It's just playing with people of the older generation for a period of time and watching styles and athletic differences. Plus many players who played in that era admitting the game today is just a lot faster and players are more athletic.

I honestly don't understand why any student of the game just can't admit it. The game has evolved, alot of players who dominated games 30 to 40 years ago just wouldn't do that with the same ability today.

Its not a knock on them, its just the stone cold truth. I'm not a know it all. But if there is anything I am, its a student of the game of basketball, you would be surprised what I have seen and studied in this game. My opinion is not uneducated.

Well I'll just say that i guess you are right Alcindor(Jabbar),Irving, West,Pat Riley etc. would probably be lost in todays game.

I find it ironic that Northern Kentucky has never been able to duplicate a player as athleticly gifted as your own native son, Dickie Beal , and he played when? I'm sure he couldn't play in today's fast paced game either. You can believe it or not but the fast paced game did not suddenly come into vouge in your generation. I played against Turkey Jones , and I'll tell you right now , he could dominate today just as he did back then. I also played the same time as Darrel Griffith , Bobby Turner , and Company. They would be more dominate today than they were 30 years ago. I saw Males entire team form a dunk line in the state tournament in 1975, so you cant tell me anything about athleticism that I didn't see 30 years ago. Do you really think that Kyle Macy, Dirk Minnifield and the likes were not more dominate than most of the players of today? They again would be even more dominate today than they were then because the quality of basketball in general has gone down.

If I go along with your theory, I guess that I am suposed to assume that Casssius Clay/Ali , Joe Frazier, and George Foreman came from an era where athletes are just not as good as they are now. Foreman proved that at 50 years of age and about 80 pounds over his fighting weight that he was not light years away from still being able to contend for the title.

I guess that O.J. Simpson , Joe Namath, Johnny U., Paul Warfield, Bob Hayes, and the likes couldn't play in the NFL either because they just aren't as athletic as todays guys.

You made the statement that todays coaches are much more advanced today than they were 30 years ago. That may be the funniest statement of all. Adolph Rupp perfected the game that you think just began in the last few years. You cannot support your theory if you typed on here all day long.

Having looked through all the posts, you can tell who actually saw Dinn and Draud and Jennings play and who didn't.

A couple of questions that pop in to my mind when thinking about this "list" thing....

1. Does winning Mr. Basketball automatically put you on the "all-time" best list or the the "last 25 yrs best list"? I see people putting Ross Neltner on their list, but I'm not so sure. I talked with someone the other night who thought another former Highlands center(big Bob Cowie) would own young Neltner.

2. Does setting the record for scoring in your region put you on the list? If this is the case, which I think it should be. Then Willie Schlarman would have to make the list.

Anyone want to nominate a 9th Region coach to coach this team? Shields, Listerman, Flynn....others....

My starting 5 would be.....

Beal - PG

Draud - SG

Dinn - F

Jennings - F

Schlarman - F

My only thing is how discredit todays players as if they are so much worse.

I count Beal intoday's players. When I was saying players from old days I'm think early 70's on down.

Plus I think Holmes is creating a newer verision of Beal and his name is Duran Jefferson.

Pretty hard to belive that Derek Smith Doesn't make yoru team. How many KY players played well on a National level like Derek?

IMHO, all 3 Forwards had better all-around games than Derek.

Where did Derek play basketball on a national level?

As much as I would love to agree with you, because I am from this era as well, I don't think I could include Dinn, Jennings or Schlarman as the best players from the 9th at these positions. I can't argue with Beal and Draud but the others are stretches. Schalrman was not even the coach's pick as POY that year.

I'd take Coach Shields or Mote Hils to coach my 9th region team.

I must agree. Neltner was not near as good as Doelmann. Probably top 25 though.

How about a gentleman that coached at Dayton. His name is John Wooden.

He would probably get a few votes. ;)
