I don't know. I don't think that anyone really believed Dalton would be ready to win this year. IMO, Gradkowski would be a much better choice to start game 1 this season.

I honestly believe Mike Brown is going super cheap to make as much money as he can before the rule change requires him to spend X amount of dollars due to the salary floor.

 

I think it will be interesting to see what the Bengals do when they are forced to spend.

Spend unintelligently. Give Mike Brown and his minion family members and any other NFL owner/GM the same amount of money and those other NFL teams will make smarter moves and produce a better team every time. The man simply doesn't have the football acumen, but apparently has deluded himself into believing it was passed down to him through his father's genes.

 

All teams will have to spend a certain amount of money right. Well that means everyone will be spending decent amount of money on players, so do people honestly believe that even then we would get top players here? The top players we would get are like the people like Odom who they spent a lot of money on. You all don't seem to get that, even if Mike Brown wasn't cheap we still wouldn't get many of these good players here because they simply don't want to be here.

The thing is almost everyone wanted Palmer and Bratkowski out and they were replaced by guys worse than them and that was tough to do. To your point though I agree. I thought they would be bad in 09 and they weren't and I thought they could be good in 10 but the schedule could hurt them and they were terrible. This year I think they're one of the 3 or 4 worst teams in football but they play a schedule that could see them win 4 or 5 games if they play good D and don't turn it over.

 

The absolute best case scenario for the Bengals is to go 2-14 and get the number 1 pick all while averaging about 25,000 fans a game. Brown will get rid of Marvin and I think he would have to go after Gruden. Now everyone would want to know why Gruden would take it and I agree but here's why: His brother is already the O coordinator and he would likely never get another NFL job unless it's with Jon somewhere else. Brown will make a "desperate" move only when he can't sell any tickets. Gruden would ask to be the coach and GM and demand that scouts are hired. If he can win consistently in Cincy that would make him even more valuable as a coach when he leaves after 4 or 5 years. Luck is an enticing prospect. I know it's a pipe dream, but it's what I need to hope happens to make this season fun.

However your thing on Bratkowski, you said they brought in someone worst than him? Who knows you may be right, but how can you make that judgement based on two preseason games? Remember he also has only had training camp to install his offense, he didn't have all off season. Not to mention it's not like they are going to show to much of it before the season starts. He is a question mark no doubt, but to early to tell if he is worst than Bratkowski. Have to give him at least two years and a full off season before we make that call. Just like I am not going to say Dalton won't be any good, until after seeing him about two seasons. I am hoping Dalton ends up being really good, and better than Palmer. However right now its a wait and see approach. If he doesn't pan out, then this could get really ugly for years to come.

If Dalton and his young weapons pan out, the Bengals could actually be in a position to make some noise in 2013 when Mike Brown is forced to spend. Best-case scenario, the team has a young, high-octane offense similar to the days when Carson, Chad and TJ were lighting it up and they actually improve the defense by spending money.

 

If it works out, they really could have an explosive offense...Dalton is an efficient, smart QB who can distribute the ball and keep the chains moving. A.J. Green is an elite, top tier WR. Jerome Simpson is an athletic, play-making #2. Shipley is the ideal slot guy. And, Gresham fits the modern, athletic mold at TE. Benson will have a lot of wear by then, so RB may be the question.

 

I'm pretty interested to watch these young guys on offense to see if they can progress and actually develop into a strong unit. I'm a big fan of Dalton and Green, and I like what I've seen from the other guys to date. I think they have some real potential.

Which I would have been all for. If I were the Bengals after they drafted Dalton. That one day when the lockout was lifted, I would have called Palmer and said listen come back and give us one more year. Give us everything you have this year, and if you do that and still want traded then we will trade you next year. With him they could have done well this year. The teams that are going to do well are teams who have Veteran QB's in place this year, which the Bengals would have had with Palmer. Even with a new offense, he would know how the NFL works and especially the defenses in the division. So I would have tried to convince him just one more year with everything you have, and then if he still wanted gone then traded him. This way Dalton would have got to learn for a year, before taking over. Then maybe if they did ok maybe Carson would have wanted to stay. Then Dalton could have been like Rodgers and sat for a couple years. I just would have done everything I could to have convinced him to come back for at least one more year. I honestly still would do that right now if I was them, and just make an agreement with him that they would trade him after the year if he still wanted gone. With Palmer I wouldn't be afraid of him not giving it his all if he did come back.

Brown wanted a name but didn't want to pay for a name like McDaniels who has real experience and success in the NFL. I've also read where Dalton already picked up the offense and corrects Gruden when he makes formation mistakes which IMO says worse things about Gruden than it does great things about Dalton. I wasn't a huge Brat supporter but he got picked up insantly to be a QB coach by a good franchise. He was the O Coordinator of the only two good Bengals teams in the last two decades and he called those seasons completely and totally different. His head coach has no clue how to use TO's, challenges or run the clock, and it is believed that his star receiver free lanced routes and didn't block hard for runners his entire career. CP came out instantly and said he didn't want Brat replaced after he was fired but he won't consider playing for Marvin or Mike Brown. I hope for Marvin's sake he gets out and becomes a D Coordinator again because as bad as I think he is he's probably a lot better but he can't overcome being a part of the Bungles.

Gruden himself is the one who said Dalton corrects him sometimes. Which your reading way to much into it, because that is stuff that happens with coaches sometimes. Coaches in practice are trying to run plays for the offense over and over to get the reps , so you might call a formation that needs to be ran to the right, but you just happen to say left. It is a good thing that a player would realize this already, and not a bad thing on the coach. When it comes to games that won't happen. If you heard that I am also sure that you heard about the report about the Bengals QB Coach saying how he saw Gruden in games sometimes being able to call plays without even looking at his scrpit because Gruden knows the offense so well. Something like that in practice is probably something that has happened to all OC's before that is just something that your reading way to much into.

 

As for Brat yes he had some really good years running the offense here. The problem with him is that he never seemed to adjust, while other teams started adjusting to what the Bengals were doing. It seemed like the Bengals were still trying to do the same old stuff they were successful with in 2005, five years later and you can't do that in the league. It became very predictable. Another thing though remember how good the offense was in 2005, remember they also used no huddle a lot that year which Palmer himself was calling plays. Then in 2009 the only time the offense looked good was once again when they were no huddle at end of games when Palmer was calling plays. He lacked any kind of imaginition as OC, his plays he runs are technically sound, however he just became predictable.

FC. I totally disagreee about Brat now. He won in 05 slinging it all over the place. In 09 they pounded the run and shortened the game. That is mixing it up IMO. Their defense hasn't been good enough to go exclusively no huddle and CP has never been as good as he was in 05 therefore they shouldn't be a no huddle team. Last year someone told him to throw it all over the field again because of the two idiot wide receivers. His head coach lacks the abilitly to know when to use TO's, challenges, and how to manage the clock.

 

As for the complexity of Gruden's offense either Jerome Simpson is a lot smarter or the offense is pretty simple. It took him over 2.5 years to figure out Brat's and it took him a few days to pick up Gruden's. Lapham also said CP could master the offense in a couple days. I'm not saying it won't work. I'm saying it must be simple and he will have to deal with some very good Defensive coaches here.

The thing I love best about BGP bengal fans are the ways you guys over exaggerate how your team will do.

I will never forget a year or so in to Marvin's tenure when it appeared things were going in the right direction and all the "In Marvin we trust" posts.
