August 23, 201115 yr I know it's only preseason, but things not looking good for cincy... http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=pfw-20110823_preseason_week_three_power_rankings
August 23, 201115 yr Author Look on the bright side, you can start making Andrew Luck posters for 2012...
August 23, 201115 yr Author The thing I love best about BGP bengal fans are the ways you guys over exaggerate how your team will do. If you're up for a good year, it's super bowl bound and if it's a down year, then you couldn't beat UK's jv squad... I do think you will have a losing record, but you guys are going young...
August 24, 201115 yr They don't deserve to be ranked. Sure they do - right around 40th or so, behind about 8 or 9 teams' practice squads. The future never seems to arrive in Bungledom.

Going young in a short off-season is a recipe for a very bad season. Made doubly bad by the favorable schedule. If they can get the running game going and the defense to play like it was 2009, it could go better than expected.
August 24, 201115 yr I was thinking the exact same thing. They literally have an entire team of 2nd and 3rd stringers. I'm kind of digging their strategy of picking up a bunch of 49'er castoffs. Don't get to see a lot of 49'er games on TV, so the Bengals have generously decided to bring SF's team here in person for us to view firsthand - well, just the 49'er backups obviously.

If they can get the running game going and the defense to play like it was 2009, it could go better than expected. Unfortunately, a running game is tough to get going when there is no meaningful passing game to keep opposing defenses honest. I think the Bengals' defense is going to be surprising bad, thanks in large part to the usual inept pass rush. Tough to ask good DB's - much less averages ones - to cover WR's for 5-6 seconds or more.

Hmmm no passing game to help out, yet people wanted a guy gone in Palmer who could do that and knew how to win in the division. When teams played the Bengals they still prepared for the pass because of Palmer, this year they will completely load the box and dare Dalton to beat them. Hopefully he can do it though, or at least enough to make people not load the box as much. It's just funny to hear these things now, people last year thought we were so bad off at QB, now we will see how bad off we really can get. I said this before if Dalton doesn't work out, we might be looking at the dark days of the 90's coming back again.
August 24, 201115 yr When do the bright days arrive? The Bengals blow and do 9 out of every 10 years.

The thing is almost everyone wanted Palmer and Bratkowski out and they were replaced by guys worse than them and that was tough to do. To your point though I agree. I thought they would be bad in 09 and they weren't and I thought they could be good in 10 but the schedule could hurt them and they were terrible. This year I think they're one of the 3 or 4 worst teams in football but they play a schedule that could see them win 4 or 5 games if they play good D and don't turn it over. The absolute best case scenario for the Bengals is to go 2-14 and get the number 1 pick all while averaging about 25,000 fans a game. Brown will get rid of Marvin and I think he would have to go after Gruden. Now everyone would want to know why Gruden would take it and I agree but here's why: His brother is already the O coordinator and he would likely never get another NFL job unless it's with Jon somewhere else. Brown will make a "desperate" move only when he can't sell any tickets. Gruden would ask to be the coach and GM and demand that scouts are hired. If he can win consistently in Cincy that would make him even more valuable as a coach when he leaves after 4 or 5 years. Luck is an enticing prospect. I know it's a pipe dream, but it's what I need to hope happens to make this season fun.
August 24, 201115 yr I honestly believe Mike Brown is going super cheap to make as much money as he can before the rule change requires him to spend X amount of dollars due to the salary floor. I think it will be interesting to see what the Bengals do when they are forced to spend.

I think it will be interesting to see what the Bengals do when they are forced to spend. Spend unintelligently. Give Mike Brown and his minion family members and any other NFL owner/GM the same amount of money and those other NFL teams will make smarter moves and produce a better team every time. The man simply doesn't have the football acumen, but apparently has deluded himself into believing it was passed down to him through his father's genes.
August 24, 201115 yr Maybe Mike Brown really is just setting this team up for failure in order to get Andrew Luck. Who could blame him? Carson retiring basically ruined the Bengals chances at doing anything this year. I, for one, am prepared to laugh at and watch the Bengals lose all season long.
