Sad story but it sounds as if the coaches were doing everything possible to keep them hydrated.

Less than 5 minutes ago I sent my daughter , who is a student trainer for a high school football team in Cincy, out the door with the following instructions: Keep a close eye on every kid especially the bigger boys and make sure they do not look like they are getting ready to collapse.

This just breaks my heart.

CNN just reported that two players from Henry County , GEORGIA ,had collapsed during high school football practice , then a short while later , both players died.

ABC World News Tonight was reporting from Texas . They did an experiment with football helmets . The heat index was 108 degrees on the field. They put a maroon color helmet in the sun for 10 minutes , after that 10 minutes in the sun , the temperature of the helmet was 154 degrees. Imagine what it would be if they practiced in the sun for two hours . The coaches and parents need to be safety minded , for sure .

Just imagine the temperature of the heat escaping the body that is trapped in the helmet along with the temperature generated from the 154 degree helmet surface. I know that it would suprise us all.

My son has told me how much hotter wearing a helmet is. You're not just adsorbing heat from the sun, but the padding in the helmet acts as an insulator holding the body generated heat in.

He is 100% correct that the football culture does not allow a kid to say "I need to take a break."

So sad to hear this kind of story. Even though its been really taxing, I'm glad we've been going late in the evening. Practice in the summer is so scary.

Good question. I know that today's coaches are much more kind with water breaks. I know so many kids gulp down those energy drinks and that's not good with all the heat.

Air conditioning and Playstation, Xbox. Kids don't get out and play in it enough these days. AC definitely makes a hot, humid outside a shock to the body.
