July 29, 201115 yr Jayson Stark reporting the Reds are in the "hunt" for Pence. I like this possibility a lot. I hope the Reds can pull it off. Only 28 and a very solid, proven all around player. The Astros need numbers to rebuild their farm system and the Reds have them.

The last thing this team needs is another outfielder.

He is getting close to free agency. He has been eligible for arbitration a couple of times. I believe this will be year 4 of service. A player becomes eligible to be a free agent at year 6, so the Reds would control him for a couple of years but would be faced with arbitration. I would trade either Heisey or Alonso and a couple of other lesser prospects for Pence right now.
July 29, 201115 yr I think Pence has a couple years left on his contract. Braves are in on him too and they have plenty of young talent available. Will be interesting...
July 29, 201115 yr Author Not a FA until 2014. Get him. He is just what the Reds need. Plug his right handed bat in at #4 between Votto and Bruce and we are back in the race in two weeks.
July 29, 201115 yr They should just throw in Michael Bourn while they're at it. Stubbs, Alonso, Wood/Bailey/Volquez, Grandal, Francisco for Bourn and Pence.
July 29, 201115 yr Get him. He is just what the Reds need. Plug his right handed bat in at #4 between Votto and Bruce and we are back in the race in two weeks. Now he's making 6.9M this year and is arbitration eligible each of the next two seasons, but it'd be worth it IMO.

July 29, 201115 yr Author Say what? Do you honestly think that Pence is a cleanup hitter? Absolutely, especially on this Reds team. He has hit 25 HR's the last 3 years. Bat him cleanup, move Phillips back to #2 and the heart of year order can go out and play every night. It will have a huge impact on the entire offense.

Right now I'd rather have BP leading off, Cairo in the 2 hole, and Stubbs in the 6 or 7 hole...if this trade were to happen anyway.
July 29, 201115 yr Author Right now I'd rather have BP leading off, Cairo in the 2 hole, and Stubbs in the 6 or 7 hole...if this trade were to happen anyway. I could go with that. Believe it or not though, Stubbs OBP is almost exactly the same as Phillips'. But I do think hitting Stubbs 6th would take some pressure off him.
