Athletic Scholarships in Pioneer League?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if the football programs in the Pioneer League, like Dayton, Morehead, and Butler, give out full ride athletic scholarships?

The do not. 1-AA Non Scholarship. Now, I'm sure they give out grants and what not, much like NAIA schools that make up or could even pay for the total cost of tuition, but as far as full ride "athletic scholarships"? Negative.

Nope. I think they get grants for dorms and books along with possible grants that could pay for their classes. No athletic ships for football though.

NAIA grant athletic scholarships. This would be more in line with D III that do not

It's not the division its the conference that does not give athletic scholarships.

Correct.

They play very good football in that League

Which gets lost in the disappointment fans deal with since the Pioneer League champion doesn't get a bid to the I-AA playoffs. If there was a chance UD could at least contend, I might at least make an attempt to follow Dayton football.

They can get a bid into the tourney though, can't they? Its just not automatic was my understanding.

They would have to have a perfect season, but supposedly it is possible.

Pefect season and a great schedule. Tough to do for them, but it could happen. But the talent gap is probably pretty big between the top dogs of the division and the Pioneer League because of the lack of scholarships in the PFL.

Correct. A couple years ago when Jim Harbaugh was the coach at San Diego they were in the discussion for an at-large bid, although ultimately they didn't get it. You would have to think it would be very difficult for a non-scholarship school to get a bid.

They were pretty good, I can't remember his name, but their QB was drafted in the later rounds by Tampa Bay.
