Alcoa finishes 14-1 which included a win over Hopkinsville. They won the SC without their best player.

Alcoa was without Brandon Warrern DE/TE (FSU bound) and their other starting DE Rae Sykes who is a junior but said to have LSU at the top of his list. Dustin Lindsey RB/LB (UT committment) was supposedly held out of a practice because of flu sysmptoms this week.

 

Best team we saw this year. They'll be loaded again next year with Sykes, Shiverdecker, Hicks, Lanxter, & Green Throw in Randall Cobb at QB and he gives them an athlete at QB.

Alcoa is a fabulous 2A program, but still plays secong fiddle to another Blount County team - 4A Maryville (14-0), which handed Alcoa its only loss and goes for another title of its own tomorrow versus Melrose.

Maryville is arguable one of the best coached high school teams around. I know they beat Alcoa back in week 2 and Brandon Warren didn't play in that game. But from looking at the score and hearing what people say that were there Maryville would have still won.

These were the public school championships, so probably no one was there to ask for a refund. :lol:

Another East Tennessee power, Oak Ridge, plays for the 5A championship today. 3 of the 5 Gold Balls should come back to East Tennessee. The football in this area is pretty good. I would love to see how some of these squads would compete with the best Kentucky schools.

I know Mayfield has had a history with both Union City and Trousdale Co..

Mayfield played UCity 4 times in the 80's and 2 more in the 90's and, i believe have a 6-0 record against them and they took Mayfield off there schedule, however, in those days, they were rotating between 2a and 3a and had a large district schedule and had to take some games off there schedule to accomadate...Mayfield also played Trousdale Co in the late 90s on a 2 year contract, which we split the 2, losing the 1st at home 12-7 and winning the 2nd, on the road, 49-14...

 

Alcoa was far and away the best 2a team in Tn this year..Goodpasture wasnt expected to be there, as most of the knowledgable fans from the area felt the Huntington/Milan winner in the final 8 would represent the west. Huntington won the Milan game 33-21 and led Goodpasture 14-0 early and then fell apart with turnovers and lost 17-14...Huntington would have also lost to Alcoa, but, it would have been a much more competitive game...

These were the public school championships, so probably no one was there to ask for a refund. :lol:

 

The crowds were very good. And the championships were no less meaningful.

 

Division II Championships (privates) get little attention and are not televised as the public championships are.

That lost to Muhlenberg was strange because Muhlenberg also lost to Reidland that year.

What did Riverdale do??

Riverdale lost last week to Oak Ridge 17-0. Oak Ridge and Ravenwood (Brentwood, TN) play tonight for the 5A Championship.

 

Maryville defeated Memphis Melrose today for the 4A Championship.
