I'd like to see you list them...

1st - Congrats to the youngsters recognized as all-staters. Its great that they can be recognized for their hard work & effort.

 

2nd - keep in mind that the importance & validity of an AP team could perhaps be compared to the level of importance for the AP in general relative to the overall media market as it is now - with the web & blogs, etc.

In other words, AP's "word" is highly diluted, hence less relative than it used to be, compared to all the other media & information sources. [bGP & its ilk as an example]

OK, Male High had no one, not even honorable mention. They had 14 all district. Where is the X fan who was complaining about X having less than Male.

Newspapers can't reprint postings on Internet message and Weblogs to fill column inches in a daily (or less frequently) publication. Your post is completely out in left field. Again, the AP team is what it is. See my previous posts for further explanations.

First of all, I agree with him that a lof of kids that deserve to be on the team get left off. However, most of the small town people that this man is talking about probably comes from the mountains, which occupies most of the small towns. So, yes, there are kids left off of the all state team each year that deserve it, but sometimes the majority of those kids are from the mountains due to the lack of their exposure.

A couple of years ago the local media here in Pulaski Co. went all out and voted like 6 or 7 players from this area onto the All-State team. Granted that was a good year for this area but not that good. This year Josh Minton deserved all the accolades he has gotten all year but the local paper today says he has 44 tackles on the season. I am sorry but that is not all state credentials,especially first team. He got voted on name recognition and more deserving players were left off.

 

Just because his stats were not as good as others does not mean he is not as deserving. His presence changed other offensive game plans. Example would be double teams.

Do you really want local papers to not cover their local players? Thats not called exposure. Thats called giving the people what they want. They want to read about their kids in their area. Not so and so somewhere else. That sells papers. Now voting on all-state is something different. I dont believe in homering for that.

I will say this: Had he played the whole season, I have no doubt he would perform at the requisite high level and deserve the honor.

 

But, that being said, it probably is owed a lot to name recognition possibly combined with him committing to UK, as well as the fact that several other schools had also expressed interest (the two Gator Bowl participants, to name a few). But those schools expressed interest for a good reason.

Only media oulets that are paid members to the Associated Press are allow to vote for all-state teams and rankings.

I know first hand, that photographers and writers from the statewide papers look down at the smaller local paper photographers and sports writers. Go to a U.K. football game and try to get a photo shot you will soon see what I mean. The small papers should get the same respect. They deserve a vote just as the others do.........................

They shouldn't. Some of the writers can ask just as good a questions and write just as good a story and the photographers can take just as good a picture, oftentimes with not near as good equipment. Considering how much harder the smaller papers have to work as opposed to the folks at the bigger papers to compensate for the lack of resources available, those guys should be giving the smaller papers' representatives a wide berth.

I take issue with his statements. In fact, the only way that small town or Class A players ever get noticed is 1) going deep into the playoffs or state championship or 2) "cheerleading," as he calls it, by his local media. Year in and year out, small school players are not considered for end of the season awards and college scholarships because their exposure is insufficient, but based upon their performance, they may very well be one of the top players in the state. Large city newspapers are equally as guilty of heralding their big school locals.

 

We all know that reporters generally don't know squat about football anyway, so none of this should come as a big surprise.

I couldn't agree with you more. We had Jake Anderson on our squad last season and he was an amazing athlete, it was really great to see him get to play in the KY/TN all-star game.

Actually, if a "small town" paper can get credentials to a UK game they should consider themselves lucky.

 

It's been my experience that, more often than not, small town sports guys know more about what's going on on the high school scene than the bigger papers. Prep sports is the meat and potatoes of their sports sections, where in most larger dailies they run more national stuff.

 

On the other hand, all local papers are "homers" to some degree. When Caldwell played Danville in the state football championship game in 1998, a certain well-known Danville writer/reporter was on the sideline wearing a Danville Admirals t-shirt.

 

I think the main solution to the AP dilemma is just to get more people to vote, small newspaper, large newspaper, whatever. I know there are enough AP members in the state that just about every team gets seen at least once or twice.

The Danville writer had a son on the team as was a star on the 2000 and 2001 State Champoinship teams.
