August 20, 201115 yr There are not enough foster parents in central kentucky to meet the demand we have now. addiction is not a choice. Some people do accidentally get addicted - i.e. pain medicine, and you can't "just quit" OXY. Some begin smoking pot to begin with to escape mental health issues for which they have gone untreated - depression and bi-polar are both good examples, it is called 'self medicating' in my line of work and it happens often because health coverage does not usually cover mental health.

That is the biggest problem with this country that there is always an excuse, instead of being responsible for your actions. If we as a nation stood up and said enough of all the excuses, we would be so much better off. And that includes our President.

Maybe 5% of the users are addicted to pain meds because of previous injury. Smoking pot to escape mental health issues. Seriously?

Again, it shows how little you guys know about the issues surrounding drug addiction. It is easy to cast aspersions sitting in the safety of one's home, not being around or knowing people who suffer. It is certainly not about excuses, it is about facts.

I know plenty of people who are on drugs, mostly weed and it has NOTHING to do with any mental or emotional disorder of any kind. What "facts" are you referring to?

You realize your argument only covers a small percentage of people. Addiction is not a choice but you make the choices that get you addicted to products, as you make the choice to get clean. I know someone very close that would fall under those that accidentally get addicted. Fortunately he is clean now. You act like you are a guru about every possible scenario. Everyone on here has a good point and your only rebuttal is "You clearly don't know about drug addiction." *smug alert*

MOST, are addicts because of no one or nothing but their own bad decisions.

August 21, 201115 yr You got a link for those statistics.Do you? To listen to you every addict is a victim of some surgery gone wrong or poor sole suffering from depression. Get a clue. How many heroin or crack addicts are so because their down in their back.

I somewhat agree with this post. I am strongly against drug use, including pot, because I have seen a number of "cases" where the intended use was recreational, but became a dependency or addition because of weaknesses associated with other mental health issues. And the problem in every case I saw was that the drug made the user less aware or concerned about their issue, but did not improve their functioning, and in fact cause many more problems including physical and legal. For every X number of people who recreationally experiment, there is going to be a percentage where the drug use hits a person who has another underlying problem, and this leads to dependency and addition. This is why I am anti-drug, period. Drugs, including marijuana, IMO are overly tolerated, and people do not consider the damage they can do to the few.

You haven't presented a single fact in this thread. Just your opinion, which is certainly misguided. No addict is ever responsible for their situation are they Ace? It's always someone elses fault. Let me guess, it's the rich man's fault?
August 25, 201115 yr Not to get too far away from the side-debate which has ensued, but I believe this legislation is well intentioned. How can one say otherwise? Lawmakers are "attempting" to do away with awarding or I guess you could say rewarding criminal activity. By supplying welfare to these people it is feeding their addiction. With all that said, I can certainly understand the uphill battle and money it would cost to implement adequate drug testing, additional personnel, etc. The welfare system is one of the more broken government programs we have going today. It is a step in the right direction, but the wrong shoe is on the foot going forward, if that makes sense.

It's always someone elses fault. Let me guess, it's the rich man's fault? I can provide 30 specific facts today, walking around in my building. I have had kids here who were "introduced" to marijuana at age 8, smoking it out of a spent shell. I can tell you about the students who start smoking because their lives are such crap that they have to find a way to escape. I can talk about the kids who parents can't afford insurance but make too much money for K-Chip, or the insurance doesn't cover mental - health so the students try to overcome the mental health struggles they have through 'self-medication.' There are the two in the last two years who struggled with pain medication after car accidents. The drug problem here is not near what it was last year - and one of our goals is to get these guys clean, so it is not excused and viewed as okay and we work hard at making them take responsibilities for their actions, but to say it is a 8-17 year olds "fault". I would have to disagree, wholeheartedly.
