Interesting ending in the 7th.

 

Score tied. CCH batting in the bottom of the 7th. Runner on 3rd 1 out. Stein hits a short flyball to LF. Runner tags. Throw is not in time. CCH "wins" 2-1. Players going through the line and Coach Holtz of HC appeals to the umpires that the runner on 3rd left too early. (Players still going through line shaking hands - now walking back to the dugouts). Umps gets together. Call Krumps over and tell him that the runner is out. Double play. Extra innings. Krumps did not argue.

Great ball game! It did go 9 innings. Pitchers all threw well, battled with runners in scoring position all night. One of the best high school games I have seen.

Indeed it was a great game but it is far too late and I have to get up far to early to post any more.

So with this win, it appears as though Holy Cross is sitting in the catbird seat as far as getting the all-important #1 seed? Obviously their matchup with Beechwood could be huge, depending if Beechwood can beat CCH. Has the Beechwood-HC game been re-scheduled yet?

So if HC would win they get the #1.

 

If BW wins then the BW/CCH game matters. Could end up with a potential 3-way tie.

 

Do they do a coin flip in that case?

I believe that in the event of a tie situation, it would come down to runs scored, not a coin flip. Not 100% sure on this but from what I remember I think it is runs.

 

Beechwood was up on HC 2-1, when the game got suspended last week in the 4th inning. If HC can come back and win, they would get the #1 seed yes.

Sounds awfully late to rule on an appeal. Unless Coach Holtz did it before the players left the field(crossed the foul line), then the umps got together. It would be to late if the players crossed the foul lines, I believe.

HC Asst coach Dan Barth was the one who mentioned it to Coach Holtz as the players were lining up to go through the line. Holtz then called over the one umpire who then got with the other and the right call was made at that point. The Cov Cath player (Freshman pinch runner I believe) clearly left early on the play. Coach Krumps did not complain.

Why wasn't Lankheit in the lineup? Sick again?

Who pitched for CCH? Severson?

 

I know Nick Ritter started for HC and threw well, and then Kyle Fuller came in and got out of a bases loaded jam. I believe he pitched the rest of the game too.

 

The play at the end of the 7th must of been nuts, great call by HC and Dan Barth.

 

And in the 9th Ritter gets the big hit to drive in two and Connor Callery drives in another to go up 4-1, which apparently they needed because CCH comes up with 2 in the 9th, if I heard correctly off the bat of freshman Grant Schreiver.

 

I was not at the game so if I messed up on anything, correct me. There just wasn't really a recap of what happened?

This is correct. All of HC's position players (including pitcher) would have had to leave fair territory, at which point any appeal would have been invalid. I wonder if HC's outfielders were their saving grace - they would have been the ones most likely to have been the last ones coming off the field to get in line to shake hands. I would assume that both the umps and Krump would have checked to verify that at least one HC player had remained in fair territory.

CovCath's bats seem to be in quite a funk lately. Not taking anything away from the excellent pitching of HC, but it just seems the past 6 or 7 games they have not been consistently stroking the ball like they were earlier in the year. I know that had a couple big offensivie outings in Louisville, but I was told that the opponent pitching in those games was not top notch.

 

I haven't seen them play in almost 2 weeks, are they playing too much small ball, not enough? Not a great time of year to get into a team slump, if that is in fact what is happening.
