Okay, this thread has got me very intrigued....How much do these books run, and do they sell them at Borders?

Watched the first episode knowing nothing about the series at all. I really liked it although I did have a little trouble keeping track of the characters. I am now considering reading the books.

I'm assuming they'll bring viewers up to speed on the characters the season progresses, but as a reader of the books and thus someone who knows all the characters, that was one of my first observations. They didn't seem to put much into identifying them in the first episode, so you were watching with little idea of who these people were, IMO. I expect that will be fixed in the coming weeks.

It's HBO man. No worries about them shying away from anything. Hell, at times the series Rome bordered on being well-written soft core porn.

I don't know about Borders, but the first 4 are all available in Mass Market Paperback. I bought the first book at Wal-Mart yesterday for $7. My guess is they all can be had for under $10. The first book is probably more widely available and advertised right now due to the show. I know the last time I went to Barnes and Noble, they had a display in the middle of the store similar to the ones they had when Lord of the Rings was in theaters. And, its been a while since I can recall seeing any of them at Wal-Mart.

The 5th book is due out July 12. Obviously, it will cost more, but rest easy...if you like them, by the time you read through the 4000 or so pages that make up the first four, it will probably be available for under $10 as well.

And, I might advise, based on the author's recent rate of production, to take your time reading them. Or else, you'll end up like the rest of us...waiting 5 years on one book and having to go back and re-read them just to remember everything that's going on. :idunno:

The only book I owned was the 4th one before yesterday. I borrowed the first three from a friend, but I'm just going to buy them all now.

Awesome, thanks! I'll have to run out and pick them up on my lunch break. :thumb:

Yeah, it took me a few minutes to discern between Jon Snow and Rob Stark.

The borrowed copy I have of the 1st book has a $7.99 Borders sticker on the back. I'm on page 595 of 807.

So what is this series called, is it Game of Thrones or something else, and what's the 1st book?

Book Series = A Song of Ice and Fire

TV Series = A Game of Thrones

First Book = A Game of Thrones

I don't know why they did this... other than maybe "A Song of Ice and Fire" isn't a great name for a TV show.

Check the Amazon Marketplace. Paperback books are very inexpensive. I rarely buy new books at bookstores,

Per Martin's livejournal it looks like it has already been picked up for a second season. A this rate he had better get cracking on the last few books, because the show will likely catch up to it if they do a book per season.

That is awesome news. Your right as well, has taken him what 4-5 years to get this new one ready for release. The show will catch up to the books.

It seems like its always been that way for me. The title of the first book (A Game of Thrones) has always seemed more like the title of the series to me. I don't know why. Perhaps it is that way for others as well.

I'm a little over a quarter through the first book. I'm glad I've started to re-read them because I had forgotten much of it.
