Congrats to Oldham Co on winning the 8th region. They will now face GRC in the opening game on Wednesday of the state tourney.

I've heard things got pretty rough at the end. Fan ejection and a technical on a Spencer co player for giving bear hugs. Just the messenger....maybe someone else can offer more.

Kerry Smith from OC received a tech, not sure about a SC player receiving the same. Oldham County has a solid team but they will have a hard time against GRC.

Spencer Co. player received a T for not letting go of a player after he fouled him. The OC player made it known he was fine but the Spencer Co player kept a hold him and it got heated. Two fans from Spencer on two different incidents pushed a player from OC. Both were ejected. Security for the game responded quickly and accordingly.

 

When talking about the game, OC got hot from the 3 point line, particularly #11.

Sure didn't think it would be a 20 point game. The biggest blow-out of the tournament. Good luck to Oldham against GRC.

Congrats to Oldham County and especially Coach Holland. I played for him for his first 3 seasons at HC, and he was like a father to us. I know how bad he wanted a Regional championship, and he has worked hard to get the best from his teams, and the same goes for this year. The game was very chippy towards the end. Smith for OC finally got the technical he deserved. Should have been T'd up in every game I have seen from OC this year from taunting and stuff. Also, congrats to SC for their dream of a season. They busted their butts, and its so awesome to see a community to come together like they did this year. Thats what HS basketball is ALL about! If what I heard is true, and SC only loses one player then they should be the favorites next season. Good Luck to the Colonels at Rupp! This was the best Regional tourney I have seen in a long, long time. Very competitive all the way up until the last game.

No Spencer County player rec'd a technical. What happened was this: A Spencer player wrapped his arms around Oldham's Parker Simpson, who had rebounded the ball, and "rode" him out of bounds. It appeared rather flagrant from up top in the press box, but in talking with a state trooper after the game, he suggested it appeared the Spencer player had lost his balance and was, in fact, trying to regain his balance. Regardless, he grabbed the Oldham player in a rather rough "bear hug", so the appropriate personal foul was called. (not a technical).

 

However, with two players entangled in the end zone, a Spencer County fan ran out of the bleachers and shoved the Oldham player, resulting in an immediate technical on Spencer County and garnering some quick attention from the Spencer County athletic director and a state trooper (kudos to both for stepping in so quickly).

 

It was a huge mistake by the fan. Parker Simpson not only hit all four free throws (2 personal, 2 technical), but the Colonels then got the ball, made a shot, and stretched a 14 point lead to 20.

Spencer opened in their standard 3-2 zone, but Oldham's Dylan Henderson pretty much shot them out of it early from behind the arc. When Spencer switched to man, Oldham simply drove repeatedly to the basket for easy layups, and also got both Dunbars in foul trouble.

 

Key stats: Oldham not only hit 9 of 14 three pointers, they hit all six of their second half attempts, including four for four from beyond the arc in the fourth period. Henderson had six threes, but Nolan Denise hit two, and Alante Flores also hit one.

 

Oldham only shot three FTs in the first three periods (hitting all three), but when Spencer put them on the line in the fourth, they responded big, hitting 10 of 14 in the period and finish 13 of 17 for 76%.

 

The Colonels dominated the glass, winning the rebounding battle (unofficially), 43-20.

 

But the one thing that may not be represented by any single stat was the Oldham defense. Thought that Oldham totally disrupted Spencer and kept them from doing what they do so well. Logan Dunbar didn't have a bad game, but the Colonels kept him from being the dominant force that led him to win Player of the Year honors. Miller, who had an incredible run in the district and first two regional games, was made to disappear by the Colonel defense; he never got the ball in scoring position.

 

Although no player on the court had ever played in a regional tournament game prior to this year, the Colonels just looked like the more dominant team in every phase of the game tonight.

 

Again, kudos to both teams. To Spencer County, tonight's loss in no way diminishes what was a year to remember in Taylorsville. Spencer played hard tonight from the beginning to the end. I'm quite sure the Bears don't appreciate this right now, but they accomplished a lot this year, and someday, they'll have great stories to tell their kids. They carved a great spot in Spencer County basketball history for themselves. The Bears brought a huge fan base with them - (tonight would have been a great night to rob a bank in Taylorsville - I'm quite certain nobody was home! LOL) and they supported their team with gusto. Jacob Barmore did a fantastic job, and the Bears should be a powerful force to be reckoned with again next season.

 

To Jason Holland - what an improvement in your second year at Oldham County! The Colonels won just 11 games last year, Jason's first year, and have (so far) improved that to 25 wins and a regional tournament championship in year 2. Whatever the Colonels do at Rupp, it can only add to what's been a tremendous bounceback year for Oldham. The Colonels put it all together tonight; saving their best game of the season for the night when it was needed to take the team to Rupp.

 

Good luck to the Colonels next week; represent the 8th well!!!

Excellent run down Colonel! I couldn't put it any better myself. It was an excellent game. I have watched numerous OC games this year, and they looked extremely dominant tonight. If they play that way against GRC, who knows what could happen. I am just extremely happy for Coach Holland. I know have have such an extreme amount of respect for the man, as he was like a father to me, and kind of feel like I won the regional tournament tonight. I really hope Spencer doesn't getreally down on themselves, because they have a chance to avenge their unfinished business next year. I look for #21 for SC to be in the running for POY in the 8th next year (behing Rowan, who seems to me to be the best the region has). Once again congrats to OC. It is so hard to think about how close my HC Wildcats were to being at Rupp next week, but I am as happy with the outcome as I could be with my team losing. Congrats to all the teams at the 8th, as it was a spectacular tournament all the way around. Couldn't ask for a more competitive tournament.

Thanks for the clarification, I was 10 feet away from the action, but couldn't hear who they tagged the technical to. You may not have known this, but right before the moment Smith got his technical, a SC student pushed an Oldham County player after he was trying to save a ball from going out of bounds. Refs didn't see it but the administration did and removed that fan a few seconds later. Crazy few minutes, this sequence of events didn't help Spencer in their quest for another comeback.
