I agree. You have to adjust. Just like when you play outside your region in the regular season, just like if you make it to Rupp. Trust me, you know if they are going to be ticky tacky in the first 2 minutes. Just adjust, like Blue fan said earlier, the good players and good teams can adjust.

Some folks seem to be making the assumption that all teams from a given region play the same style of basketball, and that a change of officials will necessitate major adjustments.

 

What happens when a "finesse team" plays a "physical team" in a regional matchup (it could happen)? When a run-and-gun team plays a methodical, set a dozen hard screens every possession team? Is it "fair" that one team has to adjust on the fly in a much larger way than another?

The one difference I saw last night was the difference in the charge/block call. It seemed to take a little bit more to get the charge call. Referees seemed more likely to call it a block. I think it was 9th region officals calling 10th region game.

 

I like changing Refs. Get rid of most bias that may occur. As for the charge calls. IMO, the charge has become so what a joke. Most Refs will let two big men bang away down low jockeying for position. Pushing, shoving, and grabbing. Then a 5-10, 150# guard will drive to the basket bump the same guy that has been in the wrestling match all game, FLOP, and gets the call. If it's a charge call it. If it's a flop, make it an intentional foul on the flopper. Make them play defense, not be feather dolls.

After having only seen one complete regional game so far I like the change. I thought the first 10th region game tonight was as well called a game as I have seen this year. I think the unfamiliarity between coaches, refs and players was good.

I will not disagree with you that there are no biases. However, you can't tell me that every region calls games the same way. Yes, they are going by the same rules...but there are differences. It's similiar to what MLB used to be when one league had their homeplate umpires wear the chest protector on the outside, and the other league had them wear it on the inside. Yes, the strike zone (by rule) was the same...but the "interpretation" of it (for lack of a better word) was different. Some regions (and their officials) are used to a more physical style of play. When you get someone "new" looking at it for the first time, however...they may be blowing their whistle all night. And the opposite may be true...players (especially penetrating guards) who are used to getting contact AND getting to the free throw line becuase of it, may suddenly find themselves being "mugged" in comparison, and no whistle.

 

Wouldn't it be better for the the teams to start learning in the regional, that adjusting their game to the refs, is a big part of the game. As in most sports, to be successful, game time adjustments are part of the game. Be it the other teams style of play, the officials, playing conditions, and so on. With having different refs than your used to having in your region doesn't give one team an advantage. The team that adjusts their play to the refs, on any particular night, is the team with the advantage. Which both teams have the opportunity to do.

The fith region officials have done a poor job in the 6th.

Ok this is the best way to explain the need to change officials in the region. Every year in the 11th region there is a good chance that Lexington Catholic or Scott County will make the regional final, sometimes they both will. Officials know this as well. With the scratch system we have in place coaches are allowed to scratch 2 refs each year, it might be 3 but I am pretty sure it is 2. So as an official you want to ref the regional finals, especially in a region like the 11th. This is where the problem begins, so many officials dont want to get scratched by SC or LC so they make sure they dont upset these coaches. It creates an unfair bias during the regular season for other teams in the region. For example why would a ref care if they get scratched by a coach who's team doesnt have a realistic shot at making the regional championship? I like the idea of going out of region for officials.

 

So all other regions have to switch refs because of these two schools?

I agree 100% with Boonesp. I've seen 2 reginal games this year, bothed were called very good.
