March 1, 201115 yr At the request of gay student groups at the university, Rutgers will be allowing male and female students to room together in the fall. More than 100 undergraduates in Demarest Hall, New Gibbons, and Rockoff Hall will have the option of selecting a roommate of the opposite sex, campus officials said. The program will allow gay, lesbian and transgender students to choose either male or female roommates. Heterosexual students will also be permitted to live in co-ed rooms with their boyfriends, girlfriends or platonic friends of the opposite sex. Gender-neutral housing was created due to objections relating to Rutgers rules that require undergraduates to choose roommates of the same sex. According to NJ.com, gay campus groups had been asking for gender-neutral housing options for years without success. University officials reconsidered the idea after the death of Tyler Clementi, a freshman who made national headlines when he committed suicide last semester. http://www.newjerseynewsroom.com/style/rutgers-to-allow-co-ed-gender-neutral-housing Will this be a trend?
March 1, 201115 yr Author Evidently, Rutgers isn't the first. Mycentraljersey.com reports that Rutgers is not the first school to offer this option in New Jersey. Ramapo College of New Jersey began allowing men and women to room together in fall 2009, said Pat Chang, associate vice president for Student Affairs at Ramapo College. Kurtz said as of last fall 54 colleges and universities in the country offer some form of gender-neutral housing, and several schools have joined the list since then.
March 1, 201115 yr I didn't think college could get any better......but it just did. Not so fast. Disaster waiting to happen...
March 1, 201115 yr Xavier girls are ugly, so it wouldn't matter... Easy now. You never know who might take offense to that due to having a beautiful daughter there. Hint: You don't have to take too many guesses.
March 1, 201115 yr Maybe I don't fully understand what "gay" means anymore. If I'm a a gay man that means that my "special someone" would also be a gay male, right? Why do I need gender-neutral housing?
March 1, 201115 yr Author Maybe I don't fully understand what "gay" means anymore. If I'm a a gay man that means that my "special someone" would also be a gay male, right? Why do I need gender-neutral housing? I would assume that it would allow a gay male to room with a female that is his friend.
March 1, 201115 yr I would assume that it would allow a gay male to room with a female that is his friend. So it's less about gays and more about cohabitating with the opposite sex.

March 1, 201115 yr So it's less about gays and more about cohabitating with the opposite sex. It stemmed from young gay men living with straight gay men in a dorm setting and the situations that were being created by the living arrangement...
March 1, 201115 yr Disaster waiting to happen IMO. I assume they make all students that do this sign some sort of liability waiver.
March 2, 201115 yr Disaster waiting to happen IMO. I assume they make all students that do this sign some sort of liability waiver. I agree.
