Highlands: Runner Up

 

I'm predicting the following match ups:

 

Upper Bracket:

 

Holmes v St. Henry

Newcath v Boone Co

 

Lower Bracket:

 

Ryle v Covcath

Dixie v Highlands

 

Thoughts? Predictions?

If the brackets draw out like the above, I see the following happening:

 

Holmes over St. Henry

Newcath over Boone Co

 

This sets up the third meeting of the year between Newcath and Holmes. It's tough to beat a team three times in one year and Holmes finally solves the Newcath puzzle and capitalizes on a bigger floor where their speed and athleticism is more prominent. The Dogs beat Newcath in a somewhat low scoring affair and the Dogs head to their fifth region championship in as many years.

 

Lower Bracket:

 

Ryle over Covcath to avenge a huge early season loss.

Dixie over Highlands in a closer game than some expect.

 

Dixie edges out Ryle in a low scoring grind it out game where neither team reaches 60 points. Brandon Hatton goes off for 25 and the Colonels get to the region championship where they meet the Dogs to try and avenge their only region loss.

 

Back and forth game between what proves to be the two best teams in the region....Winner? Too close to call right now with no match ups set.

Will Dixie be able to beat the Blue Colonels three times this year? Will Dixie finally get to win the Ninth Region Tourney or will the dreams of the Red Colonels fans get shot down once again? BTW is anybody alive on this board who honestly remembers the Dixie 1957 Ninth Region Champions? Heck even Theoldguy was far too young to remember that team! Who was the last 34th District team to go to the Sweet Sixteen? Anyone?

Maybe one of the biggest football rivals around NKy but this is basketball and with Stewart back can HHS pull this game out? There has been no team hotter in NKy than Ryle but ????

 

NCC vs St. Henry

NCC gets the easy draw and they are going to need it! With the bigger floor and three games needed to win the Ninth, will the lack of depth hurt NCC in the long run?

 

Cov Holmes

Boone County

Holmes speed and quickness against the size of Boone but will the lack of senior leadership hurt Holmes this year and can Boone right the ship?

 

This year more than any other year, the competitiveness of the Ninth means no one knows who will win and that includes Theoldguy.

 

 

The Ninth Region Basketball Tournament will be one of the best we have seen in years, with tough match up each and every night and hopefully the attendance will reflect the competitiveness of each game.

 

You know that the Blue & Red Colonels along with NCC and St. Henry will bring huge crowds and hopefully the football schools like Ryle, HHS, and Boone County bring "SOME" students to the games this year as the last couple of years none of the three schools has brought much in the terms of students to any of the games.

 

It wouldn't surprise me one bit to see anyone of the Ninth Region Teams (sans St. Henry) come away with the trip to The Greatest HS Basketball Tournament in the World "The KHSAA Sweet Sixteen @ Rupp Arena!

Funny you put Boone and Holmes matched up with one another, TOG.

 

I was joking with my gf's brother that Holmes would be the "lucky" one to draw Boone in the first round of the region.

 

Even though I have Newcath and Boone matched up in my prediction, realistically, I'm going to say that either Holmes or Dixie get them in the first round.

Dont count your chickens yet. Highlands will be hungry in tonights finals.

St. Henry won the region back in 2003, but they were in the 33rd District at the time. The real answer to your question would be Holy Cross in 1994 lol.

So that means that each district matches up in the first round on opposite ends of the bracket, right? For example, if the 33rd draws the 35th, then the 33rd winner plays the 35th runner-up and the 35th winner plays the 33rd runner-up. Your district plays another district first round. If the 33rd winner plays the 35th runner up then the 35 winner can not play, say the 34th runner-up in the first round.

 

I am pretty sure this is correct.
