Junior Sara Sticklen dominates from start to finish, scoring 40 points & pulling down 18 rebounds while playing all 32 minutes. Lady Bears led by 10 at halftime, only to see Mason County quickly whittle away at the margin. Lady Royals finally take a lead with 5:00 left in the 4th. From there, the game was pretty much nip-and-tuck until Bracken pulled away late.

 

Kudos to Mason County's Katelyn Smith, who also played a tremendous game. Smith had 33 points & 11 rebounds.

 

Mason County had defeated Bracken in the season-opener, 71-59 in Maysville. Mason also beat Bracken in last year's 39th District championship. A great game to watch, no doubt.

With the win the Bears punch their ticket to next week's 10th Region Girls Tournament at Bourbon County HIgh School.

Add in St. Pat's Douglas & the 39th will have 3 of the region's premiere players in the 10th next season IMO.

Smith has to have the best looking shot I've seen of any player in the 10th this year. Definitely knows how to score the ball. She scored all 9 of Mason County's 1st Quarter points.

 

On the other hand, Sticklen gets to the basket unlike any player I've see in the 10th this year. Perfect combination of speed & strength--just a complete athlete. She scored all 10 of Bracken County's 3rd Quarter points.

Sara needs to develope a mid range jumper (not all teams will try and play her man to man like last night) she would then be un-guardable.

Agree with you. But I mean if teams can't stop her taking the ball to the basket, why stop?

What a job Patrick has done this year. Losing all 5 starters last year and a 1 or 2 bench players and his only senior to injury this season. Most people thought Bracken Co would be maybe .500 this year and this would be a rebuilding year for Bracken Co! That turned out to be wrong. The Lady Bears have a shot at the District Title Thursday night! The future is bright for Bracken Co.

 

The Lady Royals are very young too. No seniors on the roster. This loss should only motivate heading into next year.

I don't believe I have never watched a game that a player received the inbounds pass and go the full length of the court to score without anyone else touching the ball. Mason let that happen pretty much the whole game with the exception for a short time they played a zone. Sticklin has 12 FG and I am pretty sure all came in the paint. Mason lead by three and the next two possessions Sara took the ball base line to base line and made two old fashion three point plays and Mason was done. When she attacked the basket she was getting the foul called as she shot 24 FT. A great game by her as keep doing the same thing until you stop me which Mason never did. Sara's performance over shadowed a very good performance by Kaitlin Smith. Good jobs girls as you were very entertaining last night.

Sara shoots about 11 free throws per game, so last night was double that. Of course, she scored over twice her average too. Not sure that she overshadowed Smith all that much. This B.C. faithful took notice, that's for sure. The back-and-forth between the two took me back to the 1995 boys regional final when Billy Ray & Shawn Myrick put up 47 & 44 respectively.

I have watched girls high school basket ball for 5 years and I don't think i have ever personally witnessed a 30 point game , let alone 2 in the same game. these girls should be very proud of themselves. I do wonder what the coaches were doing though about stopping the other one from scoring. If you can't stop a girl from driving to the basket then deny her the ball or play zone and make her shoot outside. I'm old school I guess and believe defense wins titles. Still this sounded like a fun game to watch. Good luck to BC the rest of the way.

Need some help here, Bracken Co fans. I looked back to the 97/98 season when was the last time Bracken Co won the district? ( It would have to be 38th because they have never won the 39th)

Almost positive it was 1996. Pendleton County had broken their streak the year prior & then the '96 team won. Don't think they won any after that.
