Bracken has done a great job the last few years building up their girl's basketball program. I emphasize "program" because that's what they've developed. They've worked hard developing all their girls, not just a few. It's paying off big time and will continue to do so. They have the best girl's basketball program in the district right now.

This is the way Bracken County's offense should have ran all season and last season as well,clear out and let Sara go off the bounce and either take it or create for one of the other girls. The only difference in her game and the Greenwell young lady at Owensboro Catholic is that their offense is built around her and BC's should have been built around Sara's skills since she entered high school in my opinion. PK has a high Division 1 player on his hands and has had since 8th grade if she is utilized like last night,don't know if his hands were tied from parents of other girls or what?, but have thought last night's game was a microcosm of the way BC's offense should have run the last two season's. Every one in the stands, etc. can see a star and a role player, that young lady is special. What say you?

Just heard that Butcher has been fired at Mason Co. I like him as a person but I'm not surprised. I didn't think the powers that be would be very happy with this season's results. The problem is programatic though, not just Butcher. Heck, maybe more other things than Butcher.

Have always wondered my MC didn't hire one of their own when this job came open? Look for one of the Butler's or Brian Littleton to take over the reins.

If i heard right, Littleton already said he couldn't coach jr high b/c of scheduling around his job.

He could do both, just would have to go to part-time. Am assuming that the girls' coaching job does pay decently

I wonder if part-time is even an option where he works? I don't know if I have ever known anyone with his job to be part time? I know at times they have had part-time people who have been seasonal help. I can't imagine what the coaching job would pay but it would have to pay pretty darn good if I had his job for me to go to part time, plus there is the loss of benefits at most jobs if you are only part-time as opposed to full time. But not knowing his employers policies, I really can't say. Aanyway, I've always liked Brian and I see that he has done well coaching the grade school team he has and I think the kids and parents all seem to like him.

It don't happen too often, but think an unwritten rule at Mason County is if you lose to Bracken County at any level in either boys or girls basketball, you will lose your job. Didn't their Middle School Boys Coach lose his job a few years back after losing to Bracken County?

I feel Mason needs a full-time person as a coach, whomever it is. I don't think anyone would dream of a part-time person coaching the boys unless it was Rick Pitino or Capalari. (sp?) My observation over the past few years is that Bracken has worked hard on their overall program and at developing their players. I didn't see that happening at Mason. It was more every one for themselves.

 

The girls coaches need to take an approach similar to Coach Buchanan does in football, build enthusiasm in the players and potential players, encourage them, promote a greater team atmosphere and develop the team. Mason's has a morale problem and it's not as much related to losing as to other stuff. One example reported to me is that when they went to Florida to play in a tournament, the 7 "real" varsity players were taken out to eat at a fancy restaurant while the other 5 were made to stay at the hotel and eat pizza. So much for "team."

 

At the high school level, you can't take the same attitude with girls as with boys. There's not the same social reward for girls playing sports as there is for boys. When my son was a freshman at Mason County several years back, 41 boys tried out for the freshman team. They don't have 41 girls in the high school wanting to play basketball for the freshman, JV and varsity combined. There needs to be more mentoring and a team effort on the part of the coaches and parents.

 

I think Brian would be a great coach, but if he can't do it full-time, there are plenty of people out there who can and Mason's been able to pull in excellent coaching talent before.

The report that the 5 were made to stay at the hotel and eat pizza was not exactly as stated. Those 5 girls elected to go to Ft. Lauderdale beach and swim and sunbathe at the ocean. The other 7 elected to go eat instead.

Perhaps, I was told wrong. But not keeping the team together for meals makes me wonder.

Almost all meals were eaten together except this one, and some of the girls complained that they were starving and did not really care to go to the beach. the other 5 asked if one of the other coaches could take them to the beach instead and they would grab something to eat there or later; the stated they really were not that hungry. It is hard to get 12 girls to agree on what to do at the same time.

Thanks for setting the record straight. I was repeating second hand info from a parent. I'm not sure if the parent was actually in Florida or not.
