Dittos to Lt.Dan's response. Some of the bigger schools are at a distinct disadvantage with respect to not having the "exposure," if you will, due to smaller schools not being willing to play them. If more in-region games took place, I believe that the somewhat head-to-head comparisons might change the way the votes shake out. Still, no system is perfect and this one, in its current form, is much better than having no recognition at all.

Impossible to be a perfect system because it must - necessarily - be subjective. There's no way it could be otherwise - and how can you compare a center (Dixon) with a point guard (Wainscott)? A great shooter (Devine) with a ferocious defender (Whitfield)? Is it more impressive that Whitfield averages 21 ppg while also being South's #2 rebounder, or that Gayheart has developed some really wicked passing skills while averaging 17 ppg??

 

And if a player sits due to injury (McKee), how much does that hurt their candidacy?

 

Every coach who votes takes their own unique perspective into the vote, because there is no definitive criteria.

 

It's a great honor - and Rianna Gayheart is truly deserving of the honor - but so very hard to choose.

One of the really sad things is when someone very deserving does not make the list. I really find it hard to believe that North Oldham's Nicole Bryant who averages 17 ppg and 6 rebounds and scored her 1000th point this season does not make the team. Are you kidding?? And North is a rival of South Oldham's but I appreciate good talent. The girl can play.

You have to cut off at some point sportslady. You have mentioned two already that should be on there. Not that i need an answer to this question but i think you have to ask yourself which two comes off the list to make room. Also i'm guessing most of us BGPers can only watch so many games anyway. I personally think the stat thing gets way too much emphasis. IMO the players on the teams that win the most games should get slighted favorably because after all this is a team sport and after all this list is to determine the best players. One team can have more than one very good player and the stats may not be as good as say a team who loses every game with one high stat player. So as CM says must be some subjective decisions made and i guess so goes life.

My question is, what do you do when they won't play you? I think that you have a valid point. I also think the smaller schools will always stick together.

 

LD, I don't have a solution...was only trying to provide a possible explanation. As to the smaller schools always sticking together, you've got to remember two things. One, is the NCKC...a conference within the region that's composed of the small schools (Walton, Gallatin, Williamstown, Carroll, Trimble, Owen and Henry...I believe) that used to require these teams to play each other TWICE a year. I believe that this past year they changed it to just once a year, allowing for a broader schedule of opponents. The other thing, is the All-A tournament. And even though a team may be one-and-done, it allows the coach of that team to see the other smaller schools within the region an additional time or two during the year.

 

There's been times I've known teams to play each other four times before they get to the district...two regular season games, a holiday tournament, and the All-A. If one team has a legitimate all-region player on it, you can bet the opposing coach is going to feel much more comfortable about voting for him/her...as opposed to another player/team in the region that they've only read box scores about throughout the year.

Maybe I am not as jaded as you are since I have only lived in Kentucky 4 years and I am still trying to figure out athletics here. But stats aside you tell me a team that is 5-18 has not won any games in their district, has not won any games in the region, but has one of the top 15 players in the region. I say again it is very sad for deserving young ladies.

I have no idea what your point is here; i thought you were defending a player in your first post now it seems like you're saying someone should not be on the list. I guess my main point was just because you average 17 points and 6 rebounds or whatever your magic number would be, stats do not automatically put you on the all region team. I don't know who is on the list as well i was "just saying".

I wonder if smaller schools vote for other smaller schools "Best Player" when that player may not really be one of the top 10 players, just to have some representation in the list. I also wonder if you are the coach of one of the better players, you cannot vote for your own player btw, if you place another top player down a few spots in order to give your player a better chance. No egos on South's team and the girls truly like one another. They are all good friends which shows on the court. I hope they make it but it will be hard the 8th is very strong this year

Some are worthy on here and others are not. That is all I will say because I do not want to call any girl out. It was a two girl race between Gayheart and Whitfield.

I do think that SO will be representing the 8th region at state. I was very impressed with them when they played WV.

Im not sure I understand your last statement. I think Whitfield is a great player and a very hard worker and was for sure a contender for POY, but I dont' think Gayheart's goals were any less team oriented because she won the POY. I haven't seen any team stats in a while but I would guess she leads her team in scoring and assists and probably in the top 3 in rebounding. I would say that's a pretty good team player.
