Im not sure I understand your last statement. I think Whitfield is a great player and a very hard worker and was for sure a contender for POY, but I dont' think Gayheart's goals were any less team oriented because she won the POY. I haven't seen any team stats in a while but I would guess she leads her team in scoring and assists and probably in the top 3 in rebounding. I would say that's a pretty good team player.

Probably shouldn't try to read into others' thoughts, but that was how I understood the comment...

 

I have seen the stats - both Whitfield and Gayheart led their respective teams in scoring, are among their team leaders in rebounding and passing, and shoot well. I don't think stats really differentiated either of these two from the other. Got a coin?

 

There are years - when one player is just so dominant it's ridiculous - when the POY award is a fitting tribute to one player's transcendence above all others. But I saw this situation coming two years ago, when the current girls' junior class were freshmen...a coin-toss challenge...

 

The winner of the POY award (Gayheart) is richly deserving of the award. I thought she was fantastic last year, and she's taken it to an entirely different level this year. She's a tremendous young lady, a competitor on the court and classy off it. The 8th region couldn't ask for a better representative as its POY.

 

But the difference between Gayheart and some of the others is paper-thin. This year, it's too bad there's just one award. For example, if Whitfield had won the award, I would be saying the exact same thing about her - she is richly deserving of it...

CM you understand me well and that was my intention. South's goal is simple- to get to state this year. I think they would rather get to state than have either a player or coach of the year award. It was not my intention to take anything away from Gayheart and I think it may have come accross that way. Gayheart is in no way not a team player, she is very, very good and her hard work has really paid off. I just think that Whitfield is overall a better player IMO. She athletically can do some things that no one else in the region can do and she has really stepped up her game this year as well, especially her 3 pt shooting.

There are also a good number of quality players and coaches distributed around the region. Just few years a go it had two players -Rachelle Gray (Shelby Co.) and Lauren Jones (South Oldham) - make the Kentucky All-Star team that swept Indiana in the summer series. But here is the important observation: Both of those players could not be named POY in the 8th that year, indeed Gray received the honor. That doesn't diminish any accomplishments and performances by any players, it just goes to show that somebody will be placed at the top every season with the recognition. (Any old school folks out there remember Affirmed and Alydar - two great horses but only one winner?)

I'm a little confused. Is the winner or 8th region POY a junior or senior. I thought you had to be a senior to be POY be wise you get an auto tryout for the KY IN All Stars. Maybe there are 2 different awards.

What a perfect analogy...Gayheart and Whitfield.... Gray and Jones... Affirmed and Alydar (yeah, I picked Alydar - all three races :cry: )... This year, you also had Devine in the mix, so it was three horses neck & neck & neck....

The 8th region POY does not have to be a senior, although seniors generally get deference over underclassmen, all things being roughly equal...

You have to be a senior to be recognized as the KABC player of the year which is recognized at the state tournament.. There is a separate vote for that award, not the ssme as what the 8th region coaches just voted for, and ballots are send out the schools who have KABC memebership. You can also vote for your own player with the KABC and have more than one caoch at your shcool vote, but you cannot with the Region Coaches. vote.

I had to chuckle at your comparison - but it is very true. I also had Alydar in those races CM.

 

I do think there should be some consideration for CO-POY in some instances - but probably not practical unless the votes are tied. No one likes to be second, it iis human nature.
