For Lexington Catholic to compete for a 4A state title there is going to have to be monumental improvement. Going from a 7 point win over a 1-10 Madison Central team in 2010 to state champion in 2011 with the addition of Highlands would be truly impressive. Good luck to the Knights!

 

 

You don't have to believe me but anyone who saw Lexington Catholic multiple times like we did at Boyle County knows they made a monumental improvement from October to their last game in November. We know what LexCath is bringing to the table. They will be much improved and will be a top 3 team in 4A. You'll see.

For those here who are touting LexCath this year, it seems that a lot of the basis for believing LexCath will be much better this year is the fact that they played Boyle County well in the playoffs. Boyle County then went on to win the 4A title. LexCath apparently had a young team last year, and so the players should continue to get better this year.

 

It is my understanding that for several years now, Boyle County and LexCath have had quite a rivalry going. Could it be that a "so-so" LexCath squad really "played up" against Boyle County in the playoffs last year, due to it being a big rivalry?

I think that's part of it JB. But LexCath has an outstanding QB returning and some other very talented players also I'm told. Put those together with an excellent coaching staff and I can understand PP92's thoughts about them being one of the top 3.

Between a young overall team and some key early injuries the first half of the season was very rough. The MC game was probably a gut check game and team played much more focused in district and playoffs. There was a lot of concern about district games with both Jessamine schools being much improved over previous years. So those were good games for LexCath to win in the regular season. The Trinity game...well, it was senior night at Trinity...'nuff said...

 

Traditionally LexCath has been up and down. Up on odd years and down on even years - literally. That may change as this past seasons sophomores are solid group with Kyle Bolin at QB and many now have a full year of varsity under them. Whitman and Letton are key graduates this year but LexCath will go into 2011 at much better starting point than 2010.

 

It should be an interesting year in 4A East in 2011.

We played LexCath twice last year. In October we destroyed them. In November we got off to a 14-0 start which we needed because I believe they outscored us the rest of the way. The team we played in November was leaps and bounds better than the team in October and had they defeated us that night I would not have been surprised if they would have won state. Laugh all you want. Shake your head all you want but Kyle Bolin may very well be the best qb in the state by the end of this year. His performance that night was one of the best performances by a high school qb I have ever seen in person and easily the best performance by a sophomore I have seen. Any team bringing back what they are bringing back to a team that we watched grow up right before our eyes like that will be and should be a force to be reckoned with.

LexCath lost to Boyle County twice(4A State Champs...42-10 and 45-35), St X(6A Region Finalist), Trinity(6A State Champs) Lone Oak(4A Region Finalist) and CovCath(a play or two away from defeating Highlands). With the exception of CovCath, LexCath made it to at least the same week as the teams that defeated them made it to. I'll also add that after October 8th the only teams that defeated them went on to wins state. This team grew up fast(they had to) and should be poised to be a top 3 team for the next 2 years without a doubt in my mind.

 

I'll also add that LexCath played in one of the toughest districts in the state when you look at the fact that I believe our district(Boyle, LexCath, East/West Jessamine) was the only one in which all 4 teams won their first round playoff games. No longer were district games a guaranteed win for Boyle or LexCath and both still managed to defeat district foes in the playoffs to set up a meeting for the Regional Title against Boyle/LexCath for the 3rd year in a row.

 

LexCath was a true example of the playing a tough schedule makes you a better team theory and I believe we will continue to see the fruits of that labor this year.

Absolutely. The 4A East is going to be a lot of fun this year.

I think they play Bowling Green at some point this year. Not sure if it is a Saturday game. That will be interesting game.

Absolutely. The 4A East is going to be a lot of fun this year.

 

It is probably easier to provide the number of seniors and subtract. There were 8 total seniors that suited up in 2010. There were a couple more that were on roster but did not play due to injury. 1 or 2 were not starters and we always had at least 1 senior with an active injury. But Whitman and Letton usually played both ways. So of 22 starting positions at the most 8 were filled by seniors. So at least 14 of the starters were always underclassmen. Usually no more than 5 juniors were starting. So usually 9 or more of the starters were sophomores. The LB corp was so thin due to early injuries that during the St. X game a freshman played about a 3rd of the game at LB.

 

You probably know that we do not do a good job of filming Freshmen and JV games. So the coaches really had no film on these sophomores and little film on the juniors. So they were really figuring out this group early in the season. After the MC game the starting line-ups were pretty stable and that helped during the district run, at least after the regular season BC game.

 

So those are the numbers for 2010.

 

I will though some names to watch for 2011 a little later.

Adam Wachs - Safety, leading tackler (75 tackles) in 2010 as a junior, Adam Bush - WR, 10 TDs catches in 2010; Kurt Wilhemus - Center and def NG; Oscar Melendez - O-line, was injured most of 2010; Jack Pumphrey - Kicker. Others expected to contribute - Corey Mesmer - DL, Jordon Artrip - LB, Calvin Zimmerman - TE / SS.

Probably about the same. Using the 3-4 usually means that can do it for the d-line if you have 6 linemen. And LexCath likes to do since they are usually smaller than the opposing o-line. They were not able to do that until the end of the 2010 season. There are some big linemen coming up in the underclassmen ranks. The need to do two-platoon may reduce with these larger bodies.

The scary thing is the number of very good players in the halls of Lex Cath. The best athletes gave up football and are playing other sports. If someone could talk these kids into playing next year, watch out.
