From a WV's fan opinion the WV's coaches were not out of control. Yes they do make comments just as the opposing coaches make comments. In a game like this one a warning should have been given. There was no warning. This piticular ref gave out both technicals in the game. Good ref's administer the game, give warnings where it's needed and give technicals only if things persist after the warning.

 

WV's head coach was trying to call a timeout when WV was trying to get the ball up the floor under pressure. He was screaming loudly for the timeout. I think the ref's need to anticipate those types of situations in the game and take a glance at the bench and the coach.

 

If you have a floor general (point gaurd) that's realiable and has his team in control, players are allowed to call timeout too!

Bottom line whether you agree with the technical call or not, there is absolutely no reason to get a technical in the last 2 minutes with the game on the line. The WV coaching staff prevented their team from getting a signature win. They outplayed and outhustled Ryle throughout.

Walton went 10 for 21 from the free throw line. Have no one to blame but themselves.

I've seen several assistant coaches this year that need to be at SOAS coaching recreation and middle school games. IMO they're not quite ready for the intensity and pace of the high school game.

Ryle had a chance to win at the end of regulation. Walton had a 3 point lead in OT with the ball and couldn't finish the deal. Zach Perkins got a key rebound off a missed FT and stuck it back in to give Ryle a 1 point lead with only 15 or so seconds left in OT. Zach McNeil had a pretty good look for the win, but the ball went in and came back out. Walton fouled for the final margin. Really fun game to watch.

McNeil creates contact by running in to the defender who has legal position and then continuing the shot. He is getting lots of calls on defensive players even though he creates the contact. They should be no calls or offensive fouls. Basketball rules state that if a defensive player is in a legal defensive stance or position, the defensive player has the right to move in order to maintain his legal positioning. A charging call can be made even if the defensive player has one or both feet off of the ground when the offensive player makes contact with the defensive player. The basketball rule of “verticality” applies here. If a defensive player jumps straight up to block a shot and the offensive player jumps into and creates contact with the defender, an offensive charging call could be made. "Could" be made but it clearly is not being made.

 

Walton gave great effort, Ryle did not last night, which is not usual for the Raiders. Congrats to figuring out a way to win. Shame on any Walton player, fan or coach who blames the refs for 11 missed free throws, an unforced turnover with possession and up 3 points late in overtime, etc.

Disagree with this 100%. Defenders were not in straight up and down stance. Last nite they were leaving thier feet trying to swat the ball, lunging forward and allowing McNeil to maintain his pivot foot and get under them. We've heard this all year long...yet the 8th and 9th region ref's call the fouls. I went into to this game thinking we had better guards (2 Freshman) and the game didn't change my mind. WV's dribble drive gave Ryle fits. Congrats on the win and good luck in your district !!! It's a tough one.

Watch the film. Two times in particular, the Ryle defender went straight up in vertical position, McNeil jumps into the defender to create contact. Especially watch the one in the second half when he jumps into #22 who had perfect textbook vertical position yet foul on Ryle defender. Three other times, I agree that the Ryle defender did not go straight up. Even the last in and out shot, McNeil initiated contact as two Ryle defenders went straight up and he bulled forward into them. Fortunately, no call on that one. We disagree but I'll take what I see in film, not what you think you saw. Tough loss for Walton. Lucky win for us. Never take a game for granted.

Who's making blaming the refs for the loss. Not me never said that once but that saying they were not very good last night. The previous Highlands vs Walton thread stated that the refs are terrible in the 8th region. We are not alone with the bad officating as evidenced last night. Walton, as mentioned above, made plenty of mistakes to let the game slip away.
